After years of research, this is the earliest branch of the Rickert families that we have found in America. Conrad Rickert and his wife and children left their home in Nieder-Grundau, Hessen, Germany in the spring of 1709 and went down the Rhine River to Rotterdam, Holland. Their reasons for migration were numerous. Until about 1871, Germany was made up of small inde- pendant countries. They were almost constantly at war. All of the men were subject to being called upon to fight. They were heavily taxed and were imposed upon by the religeon of their ruler. They had some strange laws. For instance there was one law of inheritance which stated that when a man died his property was equally divided between his sons. With this strange law, it was not long before the divided sections were too small to support a family and the daughters were left with nothing to contribute to their support. The property bordering the Rhine River became known as the Palatinate. People in that area became known as Palat- ines. In 1709, thousands of these Palatines left their homes and went down the Rhine River to Rotterdam. They petitioned the English Crown for Sanctuary. The English granted their petition. In the third sailing of these Palatines, June 5-10th. 1709 were Conrad Rickert and his wife and three children. After reaching England, lists were made containing some in- formation about each family. These lists were called "The London Lists". On the list made at St. Catharines, it shows Conrad Rickert and his wife and three children. Conrad was shown as a baker by trade and 31 yrs. old. The family was shown as Lutheran. They remained in England through the winter. The Engl- ish were hard pressed on what to do with these palatines. Governor Hunter of N.Y. was visiting in England. He suggest- ed to the Crown that the Palatines be transported to N.Y. where they could be put to work harvesting pine tree pitch to be used by the English in ships for their navy. The English Crown liked the sound of that idea and in the last of January of 1710, ten ships were loaded with about 3tOOO of these people and set sail from Plymouth. They struck bad storms. Being in such close quarters, and with lack of food and water, many died enroute, espec- ially children. Many of the passengers ate rats to stay alive, They were landed on Nutten Island (now Governor's Island in N.Y. Harbor) where they remained for some time in quar- antine. That fall, many were transported up the Hudson River to an area about 50 miles south of Albany. A camp was set up on both sides of the river. The area on the east bank was called East Camp and on the opposite bank was called West Camp.

Conrad Rickert and his family lived in an areacalled Livingston Manor. They were shown on the sus-tinance lists, first as having 2 adults & 3 childrenand on a list made in 1712 as .having 3 adults and 2children. The reason for this change was that when achild reached about ten years of age, then they werecounted as an adult.

The English project failed and was given up inthe fall of 1712.

Some of the Palatines moved to the SchoharieValley in N.Y. and Conrad and his family made thismove. Conrad later donated land in Schoharie for aDutch Reformed Church and cemetery.

Conrad and his wife had a son, Marcus born inSchoharie in 1713- Another family in Schoharie named,Lawyer had a daughter born that same year. Those twochildren grew up and married each other.

In 171 , on a list made by a German who was ret-urning to Germany, he showed Conrad and his wife, SaraCatharine and k children living in Schmidtsdorf (oneof the dorfs of Schoharie).

Conrad was later involved in the BurnettsvillePatent which is shown on the following page.

Since the original printing of this book, I havepurchased additional information about our German ancestorsfrom » Mr. Hank Jones, P.O. Box 8341, Universal City,California 91 08 for which, I hereby give credit for hisachievements.

On the following page, you will find a map showing adetailed section og-" Germany. About 10 km. north east ofFrankfurt, you will find the name, Neider-Grundau witha mark encircling the name. This was where Conrad & hisfamily lived before coming to America. A few kilometers ,south of there, you will find Hailer where his fatherlived.

The sponsor of Johann1s baptism was Johann ConradtRomer.

Kunigunda Fischer was the daughter of Johannes andMaria Fischer. The sponsor at her baptism was KunigundaBohmen.

Since this page was first printed, we have learnedthat Johannes lived in Hailer but attended church an anearby settlement named Niedermittlau. Therefore for fur-ther information about our German ancestors, please turnto the preceding two pages.

Their home in the Schoharie Valley was set on fire bythe enemy during the invasion of Sept. 17 t 1780. Afterthe enemy had left the burning building, an elderly Negro, owned by John Lawyer, went to it from his concealmentin the nearby woods, found a quantity of milk on the prem-ises and extinguished the flames.********************

Christeyaan Rickert (son of Ludwig & Anna Catharina Conrad)b. bapt. May 19, 1738d.int.m. not married.

The story is told that during the raid of Sir John Johnsonat the Middle Fort on Sept. 17 t 1780 r Christian Rickertreceived quite a scare. "Colonel Johnson had with him asmall mortar and a fieldpiece — the latter a brass six-pounder. The carriage for the cannon was carried in partsand required screwing together. They were made ready tofire, from the stand he had chosen in Becker's orchard &a cannonading and bombardment commenced, while a constantfiring was kept up with small arms, but generally at toogreat a distance for the latter to take effect. Threeshells were well thrown from this position by the enemyat the fort and many cannon-shot were fired but with lessprecision and most of them passing entirely over thedestined object. The first shell fired, sung in the airlike a pigeon and exploded directly over the house t (inthe Fort) and its fragments fell on the roof. Mrs. Richt-myer, an old lady, then in the upper room, who had beenan invalid and unable to rise alone from her bed for along time, was so frightened that she sprang from it andwent below, surviving the effect but a short time. Thesecond shell fell within the pickets near the well, andwhile the fuse was burning off and the ball dancing in a mudhole, evry person exposed to its explosion had ample timeto gain respectful distance and it scattered its fragmentswithout injuring anyone. The third shell fell through theroof of the main building lodging on a pile of featherbedsin the chamber which had several chests of bedding. It ex-ploded tearing the beds & bedding in pieces, doing little

The explosion completely filled theroom with feathers and groping his way dov;n stairs, Ric-kert made his appearance below, where many of the women& children v/ere.
