the previous growing year helpsresearch scientists make calcu-lated long-range predictions fordisease occurrence. At the 2011Agronomy Update event, Dr. RonHoward, plant pathology re-search scientist with Alberta Agri-culture and Rural Development,discussed how the 2010 crop dis-ease situation may affect the2011 growing year. He noted thatthere are huge inoculum levelsfor some diseases overwinteringon crop residue and in the soil oron saved seed.

“All of the problem diseasesfrom 2010 are out there and lin-gering,” says Howard. “Coolspring conditions could delaygermination and if excess precip-itation is received, it could resultin high levels of seedling dis-eases. Cool dry weather in thesummer would slow down devel-opment, and if Alberta also expe-riences a dry fall it should deterlate season and post harvest dis-eases.

“For 2011, growers are advisedto follow their recommended croprotations, don’t recrop with thesame crop planted in 2010, espe-cially if there were disease prob-lems in the field last crop year.Use resistant varieties whereavailable and be sure to scoutfields on a regular basis to stayon top-of your crop and diseaseand pest conditions.”

More disease occurs duringwarm-wet conditions, less undercool-wet conditions and the leastamount under cool-dry andwarm-dry conditions. The cool-wet weather conditions duringthe last growing year resulted ina bad disease year in southernand central regions. By compari-son, the Peace Region was gen-erally warm and dry and hadlower disease pressures.

“Tan spot was common on ce-reals in southern Alberta, with 85per cent of wheat fields affected,”says Howard. “Powdery mildewwas also in quite a few fields, butseemed to have been confinedlower on the canopy. Neitherfusarium headblight nor ergotwere as common in 2010 as theywere in 2009.”

In central Alberta, barley leafdiseases were more abundant in

2010. Net blotch, scald and evenspot blotch were surprisinglycommon. Tan spot and Septorialleaf spot were also detected.Stripe rust didn’t show up untillater the late summer.

The Canadian Grain Commis-sion (CGC) did an analysis offusarium-damaged kernels(FDK) in central Alberta. Therewas an overall increase in FDKs.Further information and analysisdata by crop area is available onthe CGC website.

“Extensive field testing ongrain and corn samples collectedduring a province-wide survey forfusarium head blight was under-taken by Alberta Agriculture andBioVision Seed Labs,” saysHoward. “Results of this testingare being finalized and the infor-mation will be posted online assoon as it is completed.”

Ralph Lange, research scien-tist with Alberta Innovates - Tech-nology Futures, conducted aprovince-wide canola survey. Re-sults indicated that sclerotiniastem rot was most prevalent inthe north and northeast regions.

“In 2010, there was very wide-spread use of clubroot resistantvarieties, and these seem to haveworked well,” says Howard.“While there were no new club-root infestations found in south-ern Alberta, in central Alberta 66new fields out of 341 surveyedhad clubroot including two fieldsin the county of Lamont, whichwere the first ones ever con-firmed in that county. This dis-ease remains entrenched incentral Alberta, and at low levelsin a couple of small areas in thesouthern region of the province.”

In pulse crops, blight diseasesare very explosive under warmwet conditions, with splash dis-persed spores, making 2010 avery conducive year for them. Aswell, white mould was quite de-structive even though producerssprayed for the disease.

“Lentils, which are usually avery trouble free crop, had veryserious problem with sclerotiniain some fields,” says Howard.“There were heavy outbreaks ofwhite mould in dry beans also,which is highly aggressive on thiscrop.”
