Age of Exploration►What is the “Age of Exploration?”

Age of Exploration, also known as the Age of Discovery, was a period in history starting in the 15th century and continuing into the early 17th century, during which Europeans and their descendants intensively explored and mapped the world

And this means?????

Page 4: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►In the 1400’s, most people thought the

world was flat, and understanding was so poor that the best map of the world was over a thousand years old.

►By the end of the 1400’s, knowledge of the world improved rapidly as more and more ships set sail from European ports to explore unknown regions of the earth…

Page 5: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►The word Renaissance means

“Rebirth” It was a time when people began to

stop the medieval ways and start new forms of architecture and art.

The Leaders of the Renaissance began to search the outer world for more inspiration.

As a result, there was a burst of interest in geography, astronomy, anatomy, trade, and inventing

Page 6: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►One of the greatest Renaissance

inventions was the Printing Press. Books were able to be made cheaply and

in large numbers. This allowed ideas and information to

spread much more rapidly than in the past.

Age of Exploration►How the Renaissance brought about

the “Age of Exploration”

Growth of Trade Increased desire to learn more about the

earth New Inventions Rapid Flow of Information

Objective: Day 3►Students will be able to explain the

restrictions on trade with Asia in the 1400’s and how these restrictions contributed to the Age of Exploration.

Page 10: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►It should be no surprise that it was the

idea of getting rich that got the Europeans interested in World Exploration.

They wanted to get rich by trading Luxury items such as ►Silk, Spices, Jewels, and Porcelain.

►Unfortunately those items were in ASIA.

Europe Asia

Page 11: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►The Trade from Asia was controlled by

the Muslims (moslems) Caravan Routes.

The Muslims moved the trade goods either overland, or in small ships to the Red Sea from across the Indian Ocean.

Overland Routes

Red Sea

Once the Goods reached the Mediterranean ports, the Muslims would only sell them to the Italian cities of Genoa and Venice…

Venice became the most powerful port in the Western world, due to the special trading privileges with the Muslim Traders…

The countries of Spain and Portugal (very powerful countries at this time) did not get these special trade arrangements.

Spain and Portugal

Page 12: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration Spain and Portugal wanted to make

money with by selling the Goods from Asia.

So they began to look for ways of bypassing the Muslim territories, so they could trade directly with Asia.

To do this, they would have to find new Sea Routes to do so…

Page 13: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration► Why not just get the goods from the

Muslims??

Every Time a Good switches hands, the price goes up. If you can get it from the source and sell it, you can make more money!

Page 14: Age of Exploration

Quick Write►Who did Spain and Portugal want to

find new ways to trade with? And why did they want to?

Objectives: Day 4►Students will be able to discuss the

way in which the labors of 15th and 16th (1400’s and 1500’s) century explorers increased knowledge of the known world.

►Henry The Navigator►Bartholemeu Diaz►Vasco Da Gama

Page 17: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►So… Europeans wanted to find a new

way to trade with Asia. Why?

Page 18: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►Spain and Portugal thought the best

way to get to Asia was by Sea. Sailing around Africa.A Few Little Problems

►Their ships were not very good.►They had never ventured more than 800 miles

from their home.►They didn’t know much about Astronomy or

Mathematics. These are two important skills to know in order to sail and not get LOST!

Page 19: Age of Exploration

Quick Write►What issues would Spain and Portugal

have to overcome in order to Trade with Asia?

Page 20: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►To Overcome these problems a Portuguese

man by the name of Henry The Navigator, founded a school of navigation.

►Henry gathered together experts to teach Portuguese sea captains new methods of sailing based on science.

►They developed techniques that allowed sailors to stay on course by calculating the positions of their ships in relation to the stars.

►They created an instrument called an Astrolabe

Page 21: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►They also built better ships called

Caravels

These new ships had better Rudders for steering and improved sails.

Page 22: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►With new ships and well trained sailors

Henry began exploring down the coast of Africa. They had several goals in mind.

►Goals of Exploring1. To find a new trade route to Asia (of

course).2. To chart unknown regions of the world.3. To Claim new land for Portugal.4. To bring Christianity to people in these

new lands.

Page 23: Age of Exploration

Quick Write►How did Henry the Navigator influence

exploration and what were the goals of exploration?

Page 24: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration►Bartholomeu Dias of Portugal

In 1487 Dias reached the southern tip of Africa becoming the first to discover a passage around Africa.

►Vasco da Gama In 1497 Vasco da Gama set sail from

Portugal and became the first to sail around the Cape of Good Hope and reach India.

He established Portugal’s first colony in India.

Page 25: Age of Exploration

Age of Exploration► One of the most unfortunate consequences of the

early Portuguese explorations was the SLAVE TRADE.

► The business of buying and selling human beings became one of the main sources of Portugal’s wealth
