Ageing Nepal Team conducted a two-week long campaign to mark the “International
Youth Day”, 12 August as a part of action/2015Youth Campaign. The team of Ageing
Nepal accomplished all the activities under the main theme of “Unleash Youth Power for
Achieving SDGs”.

Ageing Nepal Switzerland Registered

With the active initiation of Swiss citizen Lea Frei, Ageing Nepal Switzerland has been
registered. Lea Frei, a freelance journalist who came to Nepal late last year with aim to
volunteer for the welfare of children but ended up working for the older people. As a
travel writer, she was drawn to the status of older people in Nepal and did some
research on ageing issues coordinating with Ageing Nepal Team. After completion of her
research, she went back to Switzerland and formed Ageing Nepal-Switzerland with its
own logo. Mr. Krishna M. Gautam, the Chairperson of Ageing Nepal said” It’s an
initiation, it will pave the way for further enhancing the linkage of older people of two
countries.”

Elderly Felicitated

Ganesh Bahadur Rai, 78, of Bhaktapur was felicitated by “Nai Dhanrup Prize” for his
decade long contribution for the promotion and preservation of Nepali language. The
prize is purse of Rs 20,000.

Ujjal Bikram Thapa, a social worker has helped the earthquake victims to build collapsed
houses in Sindhuli district. He is financially supporting the earthquake victims focusing on
the elderly and the disabled. Muktiram Giri, 70, one of the victims said'' I pleaded to
everyone for help whoever I met after my house was collapsed in earthquake, no one
listened. Finally, I got my house built by this man. God bless him. "Similarly, Ful Maya
Tamang, 77, said," Now I need not to take shelter in others' house." Mr. Thapa is
planning to build 500 houses as social support.

Ineffective Banking System troubles Senior Citizens

Government’s decision to distribute all social security allowances, including old age
allowance through banking system has proved to be ineffective as banks are located only
in district headquarters. Older people have to walk hours for getting their old age
allowance. Mrs. Chanamati Nepali, 70, of Chisapani said “I had left home yesterday, I am
not sure whether I can return back home today or not after receiving allowance.”

Govinda Poudel, 60, of Ilam is one of the cofounders of “Navaratna Cow Farm” which is
the largest cow farm of the eastern hills. He along with other nine people invested Rs. 8
million in the farm. He reaches in the shed early in the morning and keeps himself busy in
the farm till late. Now the farm has 39 cows that produce 200 liter milk everyday and 6
youths are getting employment. The other local youths are also following the footstep of
these elderly.

Bamdev Khanal, 67, of Jamune has proved that old age is not only for repent. Even older
people can contribute in income generation. He earned Rs 20, 00,000 in single month of
June by selling grass. He has planted grass of different species in 70 acres of land. After
taking a week-long “Grass Plantation Training” in 1997, he started planting grass. “The
demand of grass is very high. If the government supports in grass plantation, I can do
better in this sector.”Mr Khanal expressed his wish.

Following Father’s Footstep

Late Alimiya Ansari is one of the towering figures of Nepali Folk-song. Now his son Hanif
Miya Ansari, 75, is following father’s footstep by writing a book on Nepali folk-songs and
culture. “I cannot do as much as my father did for Nepali folk culture but I am fully
committed to follow his footsteps in any way I can.” Ansari said proudly.

Many elderly women are benefitted from the “Adult Literacy Class” run in
Anantlingeswor Municipality. Nanichhori Kayastha, 80, of Sirutar now should not
depend on thumb impression as she can sign her name. Om Kumari Thapa, 67, of same
municipality said “I could not manage time to study when my children were young, now I
am free to go to literacy class”. Chandra Maya Kayastha, 64, proudly said, “Now I am
learning to read sitting together with my granddaughter.”

Maiya Devi Shrestha, 87, is a reputed social worker of Nepal who already has donated
almost Rs. 72 million so far for charity. Recently, she has established a “Maiya Devi Trust
Nepal” with a fund of Rs 2, 00,000. She is generally referred as “Nepali-mother” in
recognition of her generosity.

Elderly Couple yet to Receive Relief Package

Tikaram Regmi, 83, and his wife Gomati Regmi are compelled to live in the shed as they
could not build their earthquake- cracked house. They have not received the relief
package as of today. “The distribution of relief package by village secretary is not
effective” complained Mr. Regmi. Most of the earthquake victims along with senior
citizens have expressed their dissatisfaction as they have not received the timely relief.
Landslide Victims Still Awaiting Relief

Massive landslide of 2014 in Jure had affected many elderly along with other people.
However, the victims are yet to receive relief package. Ratna Kumari Tamang, 65, of Jure,
lost everything in that landslide. Previously, she had abundance of land along with other
cattle. But her land turned into desert and cattle were killed within some minutes. Now
she is taking shelter in a tent. Equally pathetic situation is of Mangali Tamang, 84, of
same village who is depending on neighbours for her livelihood. The victims are still
waiting for the support.

Laxmi Prasad Dahal, 61, of Jhapa has been missing since last July 17. Rama Dahal, the
wife of laxmi Prasad, who lives in Kathmandu said,” He had left Jhapa for Kathmandu but

he is still out of contact.”Though she has requested police and human rights activists to
find her husband but his whereabouts is still unknown.
Strike Stops Elderly in Halfway

Tikaram Puri, 79, of Sunsari could not reach to hospital as the strike organizers halted his
bus in the midway. “I am at the midway. Neither I can go back to home nor reach the
hospital, what to do?” expressed his grief. Nepal is witnessing series of strikes in the
verge of drafting constitution. Many people including senior citizens are affected due to
strikes.

disable man, Krishna Bahadur Koju, 70, of Jorpati, Kathmandu. The writer expresses his
dissatisfaction to the concerned authority for not addressing his problem. He is
earthquake victim but has not got any relief package till the date. He is unable to go to
the place to get the relief material on his own as he is disable. He has urged the
government to address the problem of such elderly people in his short article.
