T – Thesis In “The Most Dangerous Game,” Connell uses third person limited point of view to allow the reader to connect more deeply with Rainsford and worry about his safety.

E – Evidence:

*Provide textual evidence that supports your answer.

Third person limited provides the reader insight into Rainsford’s thoughts and feelings. In the short story, Rainsford’s fear and horror become three dimensional when his thoughts are shared: “the general was playing with him … the Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the true meaning of terror.”

Connell’s decision to write the story with third person limited narration allows the reader to deeply connect with one character specifically. The reader understands Rainsford’s thoughts and feelings during the hunt, which helps to make him a more believable character. His fear becomes our fear as we read his innermost thoughts, and we hold our breath alongside him and root for his survival.

In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game”,

Rainsford experiences a significant internal transformation when he

learns to empathize with the fear of hunted animals. Before arriving at

Ship Trap Island, Rainsford does not believe hunted animals have any

awareness, “Bah! They’ve no understanding.” But after being hunted by

Zaroff, his perspective shifts: “Rainsford knew now how an animal at bay

feels.” After his stay on this eerie island, Rainsford directly realizes that

the hunted do indeed experience a keen and comprehending terror.
