BUILDING TRUST FOR STRONG PARTNERSHIPS

AMBITION

With the theme “Crafting Coalitions for Change, this action-oriented platform aims to foster stronger collaboration between Europe and Africa in order to promote a shared green and inclusive growth, to uncover new business opportunities and to create synergies between innovation models. African and European leaders from government, business and civil society will gather in Portugal to discuss these shared goals and to collectively explore new types of coalitions at a time where the global geopolitical landscape is rapidly changing, bringing with it promises and risks. We believe that together, we can innovate and transform changes into opportunities. Today more than ever, Africa needs Europe, as much as Europe needs Africa. Together we will create the framework for our shared, prosperous, sustainable joint future.

HOST

A non-profit private association, founded in 2012, which main purpose is to enhance Portugal’s brand and international reputation involving the Portuguese diaspora of proven influence who have distinguished themselves in their field of expertise, namely in Culture, Citizenship, Science and Economics. The World Portuguese Network currently comprises 92 Counselors, spread over 25 countries and 45 cities, on the 5 continents.

Also Chairman of Logoplaste, the 3rd largest European producer of rigid plastic packaging with 60 factories operating in the hole-in-wall system in 16 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and Brazil.

PANEL 1: TIME FOR TRUST

Trust is the single most essential element to build strong partnerships capable of delivering enduring results and a

sustainable future for all. Africa and Europe are bound by strong mutual ties but their ability to work together is hampered

by legacy issues from the colonial past, mutual prejudices and ignorance. Greater trust between governments, businesses

and individuals, both within and among our countries, is needed to deliver on the collective ambition and on the potential

of our two continents.

The first edition of the Forum is a call to action to reinvigorate and mobilize a generation of trustworthy, committed,

authentic and ethical leaders able to empower people through their actions. How can we build trust among ourselves to

enable us to work together more effectively towards a shared and prosperous future? How can we empower youth, build

entrepreneurial skills and harness the potential of future generations?

PANEL 2: HOW WILL INFRASTRUCTURE AND RESOURCE SHARING CREATE A “MULTIPLIER EFFECT”?

Rethinking resource pooling between Europe and Africa would enable the unlocking of previously inaccessible sources of

capital, cost-reduction and the transfer of skills, technology and innovation between businesses. Some of Africa’s major

infrastructure and energy projects are cross-border and therefore include multiple stakeholders, agendas, processes and

governance structures.

In order to ensure that infrastructure and resource pooling contribute to creating a multiplier effect in Africa, coordination

between stakeholders is needed. How can we clearly define roles and responsibilities of private and public stakeholders

on both, regional and international levels, to ensure efficient decision-making? How can regional integration accelerate

the creation of regional champions?

PANEL 3: CATALYZING THE PROMISE OF THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: TIME FOR CONCRETE ACTION

Today, the world is undergoing a Fourth Industrial Revolution that is disrupting all sectors of the economy. Both Europe

and Africa have a role to play in adapting their economies and their societies to this new wave of change. While previous

industrial revolutions were rather sector-specific, today’s transformation is inclusive.

In order to fully benefit from the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we need to adopt a new holistic, long-term

approach to development. From poverty and climate change, to drones and artificial intelligence, all challenges must be

addressed simultaneously and interdependently. How can Africa and Europe work together to embrace this new disruptive

and inclusive phenomenon? How can this new model of development accelerate Africa and Europe’s fight against climate

change?

Leveraging Key Growth Catalysts: Innovation / Education / Skills / New Technologies / Youth Entrepreneurship

The growing flux of people, resources, culture, money and data between Africa and Europe will increase the shared space

between them. EurAfrican geographies represent shared cross-border networks going beyond physical frontiers to

encompass Europe and Africa’s most valuable physical and human resources. The diaspora is at the very heart of EurAfrican

geographies, constituting a core link between people and places.

What role can the influence diaspora play in rebalancing and advancing EurAfrican geographies? How can Eurafrican

geographies contribute to a promoting a shared growth? How can Europe and Africa work together to bridge the skills gap

and create new jobs? How can we mobilize youth and technology to promote entrepreneurship?

INSTITUTIONAL PANEL: POLITICAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE FUTURE OF AF-EU RELATIONS

The Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) has been the spine for AF-EU relations since it was adopted at the Lisbon summit in

December 2007. If it has proved to be an enabling political framework for enhanced cooperation between the two

continents, one can wonder what is next for relations between EU-AF? This session could focus on the burning issues that

both continents are facing, trying to identify innovative solutions and concrete actions that could turn these challenges

into opportunities.

The Portuguese Diaspora Council and Lusa, the Portuguese news agency, signed a protocol for media institutional

partnership at Estoril Congress Center, on July 9, 2018.

JOINT-VENTURE: SHORELINE-MOTA-ENGIL- JULY 10, 2018

Mota-Engil Africa and Shoreline entered into joint-venture agreement today for the Nigerian market. The agreement was

signed by Manuel Mota, CEO of Mota-Engil Africa and Kola Karim, founder and CEO of Shoreline Group. The joint-venture

vehicle, through which the Mota-Engil group will enter this market will be called Mota-Engil Nigeria Limited and will be

held 51% by Mota-Engil Africa and 49% by Shoreline, a group with significant presence in the Nigerian market. HRH, The

Emir of Kano will be the President of the Company. Mota-Engil Nigeria will focus on construction contracts, aiming to

achieve a leading position in the sector, focusing on the main tenders for construction and infrastructure coming to market

in the coming years.
