Section 2. Review of Course 2.1. Was the course first offered as an experimental course (place an “X” in the appropriate

box)? ☐ Yes (if yes, provide the course information below) ☒ No

2.2. Will this be a unique or common course (place an “X” in the appropriate box)?

If the request is for a unique course, verify that you have reviewed the common course catalog via Colleague and the system Course Inventory Report to determine if a comparable common course already exists. List the two closest course matches in the common course catalog and provide a brief narrative explaining why the proposed course differs from those listed. If a search of the common course catalog determines an existing common course exists, complete the Authority to Offer an Existing Course Form.

Prefix & No. Course Title Credits CSC 433 Computer Graphics 3 CSC 468 GUI Programming 3 Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below: Computer Graphics does not have the Math pre-requisite of Linear Algebra or Calculus III. Not having Linear Algebra prevents several important topics such as warping, camera frustums, affine transformation, mapping, morphology, shaders, texture synthesis, water reflection, and even the fundamentals of how a graphics engine places elements in a scene. Calculus III is needed by most more advanced coloring methods as the multivariate math is required due to lighting angles being 3D. Without Calculus III topics such as iridescence, smoke, refraction, hair/fur, and physical material for clothes, deformation, and more are not an option. There also have been several fundamental changes in the methods to displays objects that rely more strongly on the math background. GUI’s focus is on the creation of graphical interfaces and may only briefly discuss how the interfaces is displayed, and almost never discuss the math behind it. This course is on drawing the items rather than the making a graphic application.

Prefix & No. Course Title Credits MATH 114 College Algebra 3 or 3-1 MATH 120 Trigonometry 3 MATH 115 Precalculus 5 Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below: The proposed MATH 116/116L course and lab are designed to address the SD Mines Strategic Enrollment Plan. They form a one-semester “boot camp” for SD Mines students who are not yet calculus-ready and focuses on core fundamental concepts and mechanical skills absolutely essential for the later calculus sequence. As a result, like MATH 115, it covers much of the same topics as MATHs 114 and 120 but integrates them collectively as “precalculus” rather than “algebra” and “trigonometry.” However, MATH 116/116L is distinguished from MATH 115 in three primary ways.

1. MATH 116 requires fewer mathematical prerequisites of its students. MATH 115 requires students to already have a semester of College Algebra experience, whereas MATH 116 develops these skills as part of its coursework.

2. MATH 116 covers fewer topics. Rather than being a catch-all of mathematical techniques “between” algebra and calculus, MATH 116 limits itself specifically to fundamental prerequisite skills need for SD Mines common mathematics sequence MATH 123/125/225.

3. MATH 116 is integrated with a lab component (MATH 116L) that includes development of active study techniques such as the Cornel and Polya methods for notes and homework.

9. Will the new course duplicate courses currently being offered on this campus? ☒ Yes ☐ No If yes, provide justification.

MATH 116/116L covers material currently covered in MATHs 114 (to be eliminated) and 120 by design. The dual purposes of the course are to streamline that prerequisite material to improve retention and success for students who start not calculus-ready, and to destigmatize remedial mathematics coursework and promote active learning techniques.

10. If this course may be offered for variable credit, explain how the amount of credit at each offering is to be determined. Not applicable.

11. Add any additional comments that will aid in the evaluation of this request.

The development of a single streamlined course to serve the campus’ non-Calculus-ready student population was delivered as mandate by the SD Mines Administration in Fall 2019 as part of its Strategic Enrollment Plan. This MATH 116/116L proposal has been developed in response that mandate. The Department of Mathematics is committed to the goals of the SD Mines Strategic Enrollment Plan, including increasing the success and subsequent retention of students in their introductory mathematics courses. That being said, the Department of Mathematics is not aware of any research that specifically supports this curriculum design. The retention of College-Algebra-ready students towards their graduation in a STEM degree is a longstanding challenge. It might be overly ambitious to design the curriculum with an effort to accelerate these students through a traditionally two-course sequence of study in just one semester. Moreover, an accurate assessment of this course will require the collection and analysis relevant student demographic and performance data. The Department of Mathematics is prepared to collect whatever information the SD Mines Administration requires for its assessment on student retention and success, but a clear set of desired data, metrics, or timelines for its assessment are as yet ill-defined. To reiterate, a necessary condition for this redesign to be successful is the substantial commitment of resources, campus space, and the long-term support of the administration, faculty, staff, and students. even with these components in place for the foreseeable future (and there is little to indicate that they are), this is a novel approach that is not guaranteed to generate the desired results.

Prefix & No. Course Title Credits CSC 110 Survey of Computer Science and Engineering 1 EE 110 Explore Electrical and Electronics Engineering 2 Provide explanation of differences between proposed course and existing system catalog courses below: The EE course is a survey of EE. CENG 110 will be a survey of Computer Science and Engineering topics. CENG 110 is intended to be similar to CSC 110. We have learned through student surveys that having a first CENG prefix course is very important to the CENG students. We are creating this course to act as the first course for our CENG majors to provide them with a cohort and sense of major. CSC 110 and CENG 110 will initially be taught together while we are growing the CENG program. Eventually we may decide to separate the courses and provide distinct content. However, they will not be significantly different since we have some much cross over in majors so having a survey of the other major is important.

Informal approval from SDSU From: Kowalski, R. T. <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2020 12:43 PM To: Cogswell, Kurt <[email protected]> Subject: SDSMT and MATH 415 Kurt, We’re revising the Mathematics major at SD Mines to add a little more elective flexibility for our majors and to encourage more math double-majors. We would like to include MATH 415 Advanced Linear Algebra as a course to offer in alternating Spring semesters. I know that SD State runs MATH 415 as well (in Fall, as I recall), and so I wanted to make sure that our offering the course would not impact yours. We’re also hoping to cross-list this with a MATH 515 that would incentivize graduate students in SD Mines engineering programs to learn a little more linear algebra in their disciplines. Does SD State have any objections to this course request? Thank you, --Travis R. SDSMT is looking at creating leadership courses for their new management major and esports certificate. She wanted to know what we were doing here at SDSU so I shared with her the topics we talk about, projects students work on, textbooks used, etc. She asked if I had any concerns if SDSMT created similar courses as to what we offer. I told her my concern was that if they offered their courses on-line (which they are not thinking of doing) than students from our institution might take the courses online instead of face to face at SDSU. I gave her your contact information to follow-up with you because you would have a better idea from a student enrollment and institution standpoint regarding concerns.
