an industry for the futureThe latest projections from the International Energy Agency indicate that global energy demand will increase by more than one third over the next 25 years . This growth of demand will almost entirely stem from non-OECD countries . Access to modern energy will be crucial in improving living standards in these countries . At the same time, we need to tackle climate change – a global challenge that call for a global solution .

In such an age, Norway has the necessary resources and competence to contribute to a more stable and cleaner energy to more people . Our strategy for achieving this includes a parallel and active commitment to recover all economical petroleum resources . We need to pursue the different parts of the resource base in parallel to achieve long term production and value creation . This includes simultaneous commitment in four areas: • Increase recovery from existing fields • Efficient development of commercial discoveries • Continue active exploration of opened acreage, both in mature and frontier areas • Open new and promising acreage, such as the area around Jan Mayen and in the Barents Sea South

The Government has an active petroleum policy, and we see positive results . Major discoveries are recently done in both mature and frontier areas, investments are all time high and the interest for the Norwegian Continental Shelf is great . Norway remains the world leading offshore region .

Continuity and long-term consistency in policy is very important for a long-term, capital-intensive business like the oil and gas industry, and the Government will continue to deliver on this strategy in years to come .

Virinco is stress testing offshore equipment

“The system Virinco supplied to FMC is innovative, in that it allows continuous testing and monitoring, with several test modules in parallel, which provides strong quality assurance and makes it possible to stress test more components than in the past”, explains Virinco’s Technical Manager Richard Pettersen.

testing is critical in the oil industryPettersen says that for a long time the oil industry has been a laggard when it comes to testing, although it is essential for maintaining production.

“In today’s global market, a stronger focus on quality is becoming increasingly important to innovative companies. In the oil industry, given the environmen-tal risks and enormous costs involved in unplanned downtime, quality is absolutely critical”, he points out.

“Electronic components installed on the sea bed have to operate under extremely harsh conditions. If they fail, it is expensive to replace them, production is interrupted and the company’s reputation suffers. Even under ideal conditions, one hundred thousand units may work perfectly, but then suddenly one will be faulty. Unfortunately, that is one too many, and it is therefore essential to run quality tests that detect those kinds of critical faults”, says Pettersen, who is convinced that testing will play an ever greater role in the oil industry.

Precision and expertiseThanks to Virinco’s focus on production testing, com-bined with the WATS software solution, their solutions are very attractive. Virinco has extensive experience in high volume production for leading companies in various industries, and it is therefore in a great position to produce testing equipment for the high- tech electronic components that are so widely used in the offshore industry.

“We know how much testing is needed, and we care about quality. Our precision and expertise means that our customers know that they can trust our products”, declares Pettersen.

When FMc needed a new stress testing system, the contract was awarded to Virinco, who are increasingly targeting the offshore industry with their systems for quality assuring electronic components.

Third ParTy hiL TesTingMarine cybernetics contributes to safer and more profitable ships and offshore installations, through third party testing of computer control systems using superior Hardware-in-the-Loop testing technology. This results in significant savings for oil companies, contractors, ship owners and yards.

safe software – safe operationsMarine Cybernetics is an Independent Verifi-cation & Validation organization with head-quarter in Trondheim, Norway. The company utilizes a simulator based test technology, known as Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing to the offshore and maritime industry in co-operation with major industry partners.

Modern vessels have advanced computer sys-tems for dynamic positioning, power generation and distribution, lifting and towing operations. It is well known that software problems lead to delays and non-productive time, and compromise safety. While the test and verification regime for structures and machinery systems is well established, most of the computer systems on today’s vessels are put into operation without sufficient independent testing and verification.

HIL testing is a well proven test methodology from automotive, avionics, space, power elec-tronics, robotics and nuclear industries, and is now also gaining recognition in the offshore industries. HIL testing facilitates systematic testing of control system design philosophy, functionality, performance and failure handling capa bility – both in normal and off-design oper-ating conditions – and is conducted in a virtual test-bed where there is no risk to man, vessel, or equipment. For a new-build, independent HIL testing will identify software errors before the vessel is put into operation, and will also shorten commissioning time. For a vessel in operation, HIL testing can be used to assess soft - ware upgrades before they are taken into use, and used in troubleshooting to eliminate known issues on the rig.

Our main goal is to help assure our customer’s success in building, maintaining and operating their assets. We achieve this by keeping an overarching focus on maximizing the Customer Value of our software testing services. At the core of customer value lies the Integrity and Responsibility inherent in our third party role and a continuous focus on delivering the right Quality in our products and services. The right quality is what our customer needs to succeed.

do you need petroleum well stimulation, but find hydraulic fracturing challenging?

ONS-2012

STAND F 618

Fishbones stimulation system is an open hole liner com-pletion that connects the well and the reservoir without the drawbacks of hydraulic fracturing. The system defines a new level of precision and efficiency in reservoir stimu lation. You can vertically connect the reservoir throughout a long well in one short pumping operation.

Fishbones operations are simple: run the reservoir liner string as normal and set the liner hanger slips. Circulate fluids with the rig pumps. A large number of small diameter laterals jets out from the wellbore to penetrate the reser-voir. You will spend less than half a day of rigtime on an operation that does not require additional fluids or pumps. And you even get better productivity than traditional hydraulic fracturing operations in many cases.

Fishbones can be used with acid for jetting of carbonates or with non-reactive fluids for other formations.

how do you know that your BoP

is safe to operate ?

is it possible to increase safety of deepwater drilling while saving the

drilling contractor a significant amount of money? is it possible to provide better documentation of the

decision-making processes when failures are detected in safety-critical equipment, and thus give the

regulators better confidence in their assets?

Moduspec and Scandpower, members of the Lloyd’s Register Group, are in the final stages of releasing a state-of-the-art Blowout Preven-ter (BOP) risk model that does all the above, providing a unique tool for online assessment of BOP risks.

Why is this important?Deepwater and ultra-deepwater drilling opera-tions typically involve a BOP latched onto a wellhead, situated on the seabed. BOPs are complex installations; failures in components and subsystems do occur, as in all other technical systems. When a failure is detected in a system or component on the submerged BOP, the indu-stry’s typical response is to analyse the possible consequences and perform a risk assessment to define the risk levels. These risk assessments typically aid stakeholders, including regulators, in the decision-making process. They identify whether the component’s fault represents an un-acceptable increase in risk levels, requiring its immediate repair (the BOP is pulled to the sur-face), or whether risk levels have not increased to the point that is unacceptable for continuing operations (BOP remains on wellhead).

The problem is that the risk assessment is done when the failure actually has occurred, putting a significant amount of pressure on the personnel carrying out the assessment. Retrieving a BOP from deep water may take multiple days; its subsequent repair, testing and running will add non-productive time (NPT). The operational cost

of drilling a deepwater well typically ranges from US$750,000 to $1.2m per day. So spending a day or two on gathering information for a risk assess-ment is really costly.

Furthermore, retrieving a BOP from any explora-tory deepwater or ultra deepwater well poses inherent risks. It is easy to see situations where production pressure or the lack of documentation, competencies or resources may lead to decisions that are not based on the objective facts.

What can be done differently?Instead of performing ad-hoc risk assessment when failures occur, the industry needs a detailed, transparent and well-structured risk assessment approach with well-defined parameters. The model should define the change in operational risks within hours – not days – while maintaining a superior quality level. As soon as the ope rating circumstances change, and/or the operating criteria of the BOP are altered, the model must instantly adapt to illustrate the change in oper-ating risk.

the solution to the challengeModuSpec and Scandpower are proposing a solu-tion: to develop a BOP risk model for the deep-water industry that will offer owners, well opera-tors and regulators risk-based advice on whether or not to pull the BOP within hours. This model is being achieved by modeling BOPs currently working in a deepwater environment in the Gulf of Mexico using RiskSpectrum software.

RiskSpectrum is a risk-management software suite developed by Scandpower and is primarily used for assessing and managing risk in nuclear power plants, nuclear-powered submarines and offshore Oil and Gas platforms. By using Risk-Spectrum to model existing BOPs and their sub-merged control systems, the industry can identify their BOP’s operational risk levels in real-time, allowing them to include any potential for faulty components into the model.

By simply switching on and off “blocks” in the BOP risk model, it can be customised to the specific unit being interrogated. The response time becomes even faster when the model is customised to a specific BOP.

Once the model is customised to a specific BOP, risk levels can be assessed within hours by com-paring the remaining available redundancy of its capabilities; the regulations then create the basis for “pull” or “no pull” decisions. The defi nition of “acceptable” and “non acceptable” levels of risk is jointly decided by industry and governmental bodies and this can be adjusted to different regulatory regimes, if relevant.

The modeling of the BOP into a risk model required several steps: • Create a database, including all sub- systems and components • Identify all functions carried out by the BOP • Establish block diagrams describing the logic path, identifying every main component for its function. This is further broken down until every main, minor, and subcomponent and their functions are identified • Establish fault trees based on the logic block diagrams • Integrate the fault-tree model into the risk monitor, comparing the status with pre-defined risk levels

An example of a block diagram for one of the functions is shown in the following figure:

FIGURE 1: Example of overall BOP functions

the rIsK MoDellInga BoP is a quite complicated system consisting of a number of subsystems and has a high degree of redundancy in the design. The following figure shows a typical example of BoP functions, and the generic failure modes for these functions.

how to use the risk modelThis program is unique in that the operator interface is easily navigable and does not require experience in risk analysis or fault-tree modelling. The modelling has been previously completed by risk-assessment experts, allow-ing operators to alter input parameters and/or configu-rations to visualise the risk effects of non-working components and maintenance activities. The underlying fault trees cannot be modified by the operators, ensuring the integrity of the model.

the status of the risk modelFeedback from the industry has been very positive and the modelling is progressing as planned. The co operation with rig owners, operators and equipment manufacturers has been crucial to ensure that every - thing has been considered. A joint industry panel comprised representatives from all major stakeholders in the Gulf of Mexico drilling industry. The panel has met once a month and given important insights and feedback to the modeling process.

The future is boundless.

And all yours.

Fortunately, we already know a lot about the future. For example, we know that, with our shares in Snøhvit, Njord, Fram and Gudrun, and as the operator on Gjøa, we have secured a good and prosperous life for ourselves on the Norwegian continental shelf.

At the same time, we look forward to experiencing everything we don’t know about the future. Potential discoveries. New licences and new operatorships. In short, all the opportunities.

Whatever the future may bring, with our portfolio, the best minds in the business, and support from one of the world’s largest energy companies, we’re more than ready to embrace it.

The VNG Group with its Leipzig-based parent company VNG – Verbundnetz Gas AG is one of Germany’s leading natural gas im-porters, wholesalers and energy service providers, and operates its own gas transport and storage infrastructure. VNG has over 50 years of experience, and is a company with regional roots and an international orientation.

With its four pillars of exploration and production, trading and services, transport, and storage VNG covers the full value chain. The company markets gas throughout Europe, taking volumes un-der long-term import contracts and spot and futures trans actions, from its own production fi elds in the North Sea as well as biogas produced in Germany. In 2011, VNG sold approx. 286 bil lion kWh of natural gas throughout Europe, an all-time high in the company’s history.

VNG is the natural gas specialist: its gas products satisfy the requirements of partners in the gas market and provide a broad range of options for portfolio structuring and management. Through its own innovations and numerous cooperation projects, VNG forges ahead with research and development into advanced gas technologies in the power and heat market as well as the mo-bility sector.

Within the VNG Group, ONTRAS – VNG Gastransport GmbH runs Germany’s second largest gas transmission network, which guarantees secure gas supplies by working in close cooperation with European transmission networks and numerous distribution grids as well as gas storage facilities. VNG Gasspeicher GmbH is the third largest national storage operator with a working gas capacity of 2.6 billion cubic metres.

Norway, alongside Russia, is the most important supplier of natural gas not only for Europe, but also for VNG. The foundation for the close relations with Norway was laid shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall and prior to German reunifi cation. In 1993 the energy wall came down, too, for VNG with the conclusion of a long-term contract for the delivery of over 4 billion cubic metres of Norwegian natural gas per year. Since deliveries began in 1996, over 50 billion cubic metres have been imported from many partners, under both traditional long-term contracts and trading agreements. In 2006, VNG established its E&P subsidiary VNG Norge AS and thus began to produce its own gas.

VNG and its employees are closely involved in fostering friend-ship and mutual understanding between Germany and Norway and in preserving Norwegian art and culture in Germany; this commitment takes the form of initiating or sponsoring projects, through individual or institutional membership or on a voluntary basis. One example is sponsorship of the Edvard-Munch-Haus Warnemünde e. V. association. The Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch experienced a very intensive creative period at this house in 1907/08, and it now provides a working, meeting and living space for artists from both countries.

The Royal Norwegian Consulate-General for the states of Saxony,Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Brandenburg is located in the VNG headquarters and the company is a member of the German-Nor-wegian Chamber of Commerce as well as playing an active role in the German-Norwegian Society, university networks and town twinning partnerships.

always ready for new and complex tasksWe carry out customised management, regulation and automation projects, and work for large and reputable companies. Depending on the nature of the project and the customer requirements, we can act alone as software engineers or as turn-key contractors, meaning that we take responsi-bility for everything from the initial develop-ment phase through to the ongoing inspection, maintenance and service.

It is characteristic of us that we’re not afraid to take on challenges and tasks that others find too difficult and demanding. We’re not afraid because we know we can solve even very complex prob-lems. We’ve proven it again and again. And we’re happy to take full responsibility all the way.

At Eltronic we help companies develop intelligent production plants and machines that create a

In April 2012 the Icelandic EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Management) com-pany HRV Engineering ehf. and the Norwegian Oil & Gas service company FRONT Group AS signed a «memorandum of understanding» to establish an engineering company together, with head offices in Molde, Norway located next to the home ground; The Norwegian Sea.

The combination of HRV Engineering ehf. EPCM expertise and FRONT Groups oil & gas industry competence has resulted in an already operable engineering company offering full service, multi-discipline, integrated engineering services and solutions to its clients – on time, within budget, safely and professionally.

Capacity and experience «The cooperation between Iceland and Norway in the start-up phase has been very efficient and professional, which again makes the next phase of the company very promising. Being able to provide extensive competence and experience from complex multi discipline projects, as well as capacity to fulfill obligations, will be the key to success for HRV Oil & Gas,» says Managing Director Stein Erlend Skei.

The rapid establishment of HRV Oil & Gas in Molde, Norway has been possible due to al ready experienced and well functioning mother com-panies.

«HRV Oil & Gas has adapted most of the corporate management, project execution and engineering systems from the mother companies, and in just six month we have a full service engineering company with more than 20 years of experience in place. This enables us to already take on board small to medium sized EPCM projects,» says Skei.

First class servicesAfter being through a phase with establishment of all infrastructure, management team and sys-tems, and hiring of engineering capacities, HRV Oil & Gas is now in operation with a resource pool of some 300 top qualified and experienced engineers and project personnel.

«HRV Oil & Gas is providing engineering, pro-curement, and construction management services, and our services are ranging from project concept and FEED, to detail engineering and construc-tion management. Our long experience from both major industrial projects and oil & gas ope- rations enables HRV Oil & Gas to deliver fast track projects and engineering services and we provide first class professional services comparable to the best available in the international market», says Managing Director Stein Erlend Skei.

SubC Solutions wants the oil and gas wells that are currently in use to operate as smoothly as possible. Their cutting edge expertise has allowed them to win contracts from companies like Aker Solutions and Statoil.

The company has focused on creating products for communication between platforms and sea-floor equipment. They also produce tailor-made solutions to facilitate the integration of new instruments, as well as to increase the capacity of existing infra-structure, which is a very good investment, as it can double the capacity.

“We supply small systems that help to increase re-covery rates and reliability. We have certified com-munication products that can be used in conjunction with sea-floor equipment, SSIV and HIPPS systems, environmental monitoring, drilling, ROV tools and so on,” explains general manager Asgeir Salen.

One of the company’s contracts has involved sup-plying PodEx modules to Aker Solutions and Statoil, who are using them at the Njord field. This contract really helped to raise SubC Solutions’ profile.

“The fact that such big companies use our pro ducts, confirms their quality. Those companies are de-manding customers, who have very strict require - ments,” says Salen, who believes that more com panies should invest in their existing subsea installations.

“The subsea industry is focusing heavily on all of the new wells that are going to be drilled in the coming years. SubC Solutions’ main focus, on the other hand, is on providing expertise and tailor-made solutions for upgrading existing installations.”
