The Week Ahead 11 – 17 March 2019 Plenary session, Strasbourg EU Spring Summit/Brexit. MEPs will discuss their priorities for the 21-22 March EUsummit, focussing on jobs, growth, competitiveness, climate change, external relationsand ways to fight disinformation. MEPs will also comment on the outcome of the vote onthe Brexit deal in the UK House of Commons on 12 March and assess its consequences.To ensure the least possible disruption to citizens and businesses, MEPs will vote ontravel, air and road transport, Erasmus, social security and fisheries measures to mitigatethe effects of a withdrawal of the UK from the EU without an agreement (Wednesday). Counteracting hostile propaganda. To protect European democracies from foreignactors spreading misinformation or misusing personal data, MEPs are set to introducefinancial penalties for pan-European political parties and foundations that deliberatelybreach data protection laws and regulations. They are also likely to condemn attempts byRussia, China, Iran and North Korea to influence political elections and provide support forextremist movements. (Wednesday) Cybersecurity/IT threat from China. MEPs are set to state that the increase of China’stechnological presence in the EU poses serious security threats that require urgent actionto be taken at EU level. Parliament is also set to adopt the EU Cybersecurity Act, whichwill strengthen Europe’s cybersecurity, by setting up a European CybersecurityCertificates scheme for products, processes and services and by extending the mandateof the EU Cybersecurity Agency. (Tuesday) Relations with Russia. The EU should remain open to imposing further sanctions,especially those targeting individuals, if Russia continues to violate international law, saysa draft resolution to be put to the vote. MEPs suggest that the EU limit cooperation withRussia to areas of common interest, such as the fight against terrorism and climatechange. (Tuesday) Cross-border crime. In order to improve the tracking of non-EU nationals’ criminalrecords throughout the EU, MEPs will vote on a brand new EU information system and onthe upgrade of another that will ensure information on border control and law enforcementis shared more efficiently and quickly. (Tuesday) Facilitating access to goods and services for disabled persons. Parliament is set toadopt the European Accessibility Act, which will make key products and services, likesmartphones, ATMs, ticketing machines and banking services more accessible to peoplewith disabilities and elderly persons. (Wednesday) Slovak Prime Minister Pellegrini/Future of Europe. Slovak Prime Minister PeterPellegrini will debate with MEPs his vision of the future of the EU to ensure it delivers oncitizens’ expectations. (Tuesday) President’s Diary. EP President Antonio Tajani will hold a bilateral meeting with theSlovak Prime Minister, Peter Pellegrini, on Tuesday at 9:30. Following the Future ofEurope debate in plenary, he will hold a press point with the Slovak Prime Minister,outside protocol room at 12:30.
