Subject: further information on Classics 120-hour proposal Date: Thursday, June 14, 2007 3:25 PM From: Matthews, Pamela <[email protected]> To: Bob Knight <[email protected]> Cc: Sandra Williams <[email protected]> Conversation: further information on Classics 120-hour proposal Dear Bob, I asked for further clarification on the 120-hour degree proposal from Classics (which, you’ll recall, was in the same proposal with the reductions of French, German, and Russian). Here’s what I received from Christoph Konrad, director of undergraduate studies in the department of European and Classical Languages and Cultures: “In all the current foreign language BA degree plans (i.e., French, German, Russian, and Spanish) no credit whatsoever towards the hours required in the major field is allowed for first-year elementary language courses (101 and 102), notwithstanding the fact that those first-year courses are prerequisites for the 200-level courses required for the BA. The proposed elimination of 1 hour credit for CLAS 101 (Greek) or CLAS 121 (Latin) is, therefore, consistent with the practice in the modern languages. Nor does the proposed elimination conflict with any existing regulations concerning degree plan structures, there being no rule stating that any course that is a prerequisite for a course required in a degree plan must in turn also be admitted for major field credit in that degree plan.” I should have made a special effort to have departments represented at the UCC, and because I’d been gone, it fell through the cracks this past time. Christoph’s explanation makes sense to me. Does it answer your concerns? Is there any way we can streamline this for the next meeting so that Classics doesn’t get left behind the other language majors in the department? Thanks, Pam Pamela R.
