Galicia is located in the Atlantic maritime corridor, at a key position to become a reference provider of aggregates to the rest of Europe. Access to Great Britain, the west coast of France and the Benelux Union is simple through its ports, which have extensive experience in bulk traffic.

The Galician soil stands out for its geological wealth that places Galicia as one of the first Spanish regions in mining production and the first one with direct access to the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic Ocean. The products and the logistic capacity convert their quarries and gravel pits in the best option for the purchase of aggregates in the north of Spain. The quality of the minerals extracted in Galicia, already known since Roman times, is highlighted by civil engineers, architects and industrialists for infrastructures and buildings construction.

The Asociación Galega de Áridos (Arigal) is the entity that gathers all the Galician companies which concentrate on the industrial transformation, manufacture and commercialisation of aggregates.

The Galician ports are high-level logistic operators with great experience in bulk products. Companies as TMGA, which has already exported aggregates, Galigrán and Pérez Torres, operate from Galician docks products operations such as coal,coke, cement, alumina, and other materials, as well as food products.

The infrastructures of the Galician ports, allow fast and precise operations. In addition, the draft of the main ports allows the entrance of bulk carriers for aggregates supply.

Success cases: ARMOURSTONE FOR THE CALAIS PORT PROJECT, 2015

The exploitation of aggregates is a highly regulated industrial activity and requires demanding environmental impact studies to be authorised in Spain. Among others, the aggregates exploitations are required by law to have a restoration project before even starting the extraction. Furthermore, the firm commitment of Arigal members goes through the minimisation of the environmental impact during its development, exceeding the legal requirements of the European Union.

The aggregate exploitation in Galicia rationally combine the necessity of access to geological resources with consideration of all the technical measures for the conservation of the environment to ensure their compatibility.

Part of Arigal’s companies have ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certifications, in addition to the CE mark in all their products.

In Galicia, there are a great number of successful cases of rehabilitated mining exploitations turned into integrated areas within Natura 2000, even improving the biodiversity of the area.

The extraction of aggregates plays a strategic role for Galicia’s society and has a great potential that positively contributes to the concept of circular economy and the conservation of nature. Galicia’s aggregates quarries are geographically dispersed, so its exploitation allows the development and revitalisation of rural communities.

The value that Arigal companies creates remains, for the most part, in the immediate local environment where the quarries are located and, usually, in underdeveloped areas, therefore it is a fundamental industry to fix employment and population in areas that would otherwise be abandoned, neglected and less developed.

Committed to SUSTAINABLE MINING

Involved in the development of THE ENVIRONMENT

Four Arigal members participated in the operation that moved materials for the project Calais Port 2015, the expansion of the French port of Calais, through the Outer Port of A Coruña and the Outer Port of Ferrol.

It is an infrastructure with a cost of 860 million euros that will create 80 ha of protected surface by a 3 kilometres dam. The material sold to the construction consortium (formed by Bouygues, Colas Nord Est, Spie Batignolles, Valérian, Malet and Jan de Nul Group) was 200,000 tons of riprap granite.

In the summer of 2017, the exporting companies (Lista, Mynhor, Canteras Ferrolanas, Armacon and Prebetong, from the Votorantim group) moved the product by road from A Coruña to the docks esplanades of Ferrol, where the stockpile was stored. From there, it embarked on the vessel ‘Curaçao Pearl’, a 188 metres long ship, with great capacity and draft. The operation, carried out on several trips, was coordinated by the consignee TMGA. The ships did a direct unloading on site at the docks of Calais, where construction companies used them at the base of the port’s jetty.

EXPORTS TO EUROPE AND AMERICA

Arigal members are aware that the internationalisation of arid products is a necessity to reduce dependence of domestic demand, but also to increase the importance of the sector and its companies.

In addition to the success case of Calais, Arigal members export aggregates to countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France, to where construction and decorative materials are send.

The aggregares producers of Galicia export regularly to Portugal, considering it almost a local market.

Some companies are also sending materials to more faraway ports, like Kaliningrad or Barbados.
