Agriculture Sector in Pakistan – An

Overview

• Agriculture is a vital sector of Pakistan's economy and accounts for

21 percent of GDP, according to government estimates.

• The sector directly supports three-quarters of the country's

population, employs half the labor force , and contributes a large

share of foreign exchange earnings.

• The main agricultural products are cotton, wheat, rice, sugarcane,

fruit and vegetables, in addition to milk, beef, mutton, and

poultry.

• Pakistan depends on one of the world's largest irrigation

systems to support production.

• 3rd largest herd of livestock and is the 5th largest producer of milk.

• Pakistan’s largest export commodity is rice, and it is ranked 11th in

world rice production.

producer of dates and the 6th largest producer of mangoes.
