Our Agricultural Enterprises

In the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, agricultural enterprises are small or family oriented, however,

their contribution to the regional and economic development is noteworthy. 153 producers are

located throughout the territory. The primary production, at 67 % is beef cattle farms with their

cow-calf livestock. The second most important production, based on the number of farms, is

dairy farming. In 2013, the milk production of these producers was estimated at more than 4.3

million liters, or 12 % of the Outaouais’ milk production. These are the two principal

productions but numerous others are present.

Sheep farming;

Goat farming;

Production of small fruits & berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries,

honeyberries);

Forage/ fodder and other field crops;

Maple syrup production;

Equine farms;

Vegetable farms;

Beekeeping;

Apple orchard;

Forestry production;

Greenhouse crops and ornamental plants.

The farms registered at the MAPAQ (Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de

l’Alimentation du Québec) occupy more than 29,700 hectares that are mostly concentrated

along the Gatineau River. The cultivated agricultural land is essentially used for the production

of forage and pasture, which covers 91 % of the area under cultivation.

Our eight maple syrup industries represent 59 % of the total maple syrup production, in the

Outaouais region. In 2010, these companies tapped 92,400 maple trees on 590 hectares of

land. Even though they represent the largest portion of the maple industry, in the Outaouais,

there remains 55 600 hectares of rich maple forest yet to be developed.

Horticultural products, especially small fruits and berries, have flourished considerably in recent

years due to various diversification projects.

All of the agricultural enterprises included in this document sell their products locally. We invite

you to discover and rediscover the local products that will surely delight you.
