    Introduction

    The Ad aptec AH A

-2940 an d AH A-2940W PCI-to-Fast SCSI host adap ters provide a powerfu l m ulti-tasking interface between you r compu ters PCI busand SCSI d evices (d isk d rives, CD-ROM d rives, scann ers, tape backups, removable m ed ia d rives,etc.). Collectively, both host ad ap ters are r eferred toas the AH A-2940/ 2940W. The follow ing figu resshow the m ajor com ponents on the AH A-2940 andAHA-2940W.

s If th e AHA-2940 detects that a cable is connectedto both its internal and extern al SCSI connector,

then it d isables its term inator s (th e AH A-2940 liesbetw een the end s of the SCSI bu s).

We recomm end that you leave the AHA-2940 set toits defau lt setting of Au tom atic. If you want to m an-ually en able or d isable the AH A-2940 term inationsetting, see Configuring the Host A dapter on p age 8.

Terminating the AHA-2940WTerm inat ion on the AH A-2940W itself is also con -trolled by softw are com m and s via the SCSI Select util-ity. The d efau lt setting is set to Low ON/High ON .

This means that term ination is enabled for both thelow and the high bytes of the 16-bit Wide SCSI bu s.The low byte con trols the 8-bit SCSI; the low andhigh bytes together con trol 16-bit Wid e SCSI.

If you are using both internal connectors on th e

AH A-2940W, or an internal connector and the exter-nal connector, you m ust change the term ination set-ting from the d efau lt setting. The follow ing tablelists the term ination configu rations.

Terminating SCSI DevicesRead the d evices d ocum entation to d eterm ine h owto enable or d isable termination on you r p articu larSCSI d evice(s). On m ost internal SCSI d evices th e ter-mination setting is controlled by a jumper or asw itch . On other internal SCSI devices you mu stphysically rem ove or install resistor mod ule(s). Onmost external SCSI dev ices, a term inating p lug (aresistor p ack embed d ed in a sm all plug) is installedor removed to control termination.

    Installing SCSI Devices

You can con nect u p to a total of seven internal andexternal 8-bit SCSI devices to the AH A-2940, and upto 15 devices (seven 8-bit internal and eight Wide (16-bit) internal or external SCSI devices, or 15 Wid e inter-nal and external SCSI devices) to the AH A-2940W.

Choosing SCSI CablesThe cables requ ired to connect SCSI d evices ared eterm ined by the type of d evices you are installing,as described in the follow ing table.

If you pu rchased you r AH A-2940/ 2940W in anAd aptec kit, the kit includes an intern al SCSI cablethat allow s you to connect u p to two internal SCSId evices (th e AH A-2940 kit includ es a 50-p in internalSCSI cable, and the AH A-2940W k it includes a68-p in internal SCSI cable). If you are connectingmore than tw o internal SCSI d evices, you m ustobtain an internal SCSI cable w ith enough connec-

tors to accom mod ate all of you r d evices.Ad aptec sells h igh-qu ality in ternal and extern al SCSIcables. If you r reseller does not s tock these cables, call Adaptec d irectly at the nu m ber for ord eringAd aptec softw are and cables listed on p age 12.

Wh en Fast SCSI devices are connected to the hostad ap ter, the total length of all cables (internal andexternal) must not exceed 3 m eters (9.8 ft.) to ensu rereliable op eration . If no Fast SCSI d evices are con-nected , the total length of all cables m ust not exceed

6 m eters (19.7 ft). See you r d evices d ocum entat ionto d eterm ine if it is a Fast SCSI device.

Connecting Internal SCSI DevicesIf you are connecting internal SCSI d evices, m ake

sure you have an in ternal SCSI cable w ith enou ghconnectors to accom m od ate all of you r d evices.

1 Prepare each SCSI device for installation ; config-u re the d evice SCSI ID and term inators (term inatethe last internal device attached to the cable). Forinstru ctions, see the d evices d ocum entation aswell as SCSI Configuration Guidelines on p age 2.

2 Install the SCSI d evice in your com puter. Refer toyour com pu ter and d evice docum entation forinstructions.

3 Plug th e connector at one end of the internal SCSIcable into the host ad ap ter s internal SCSIconnector.

Make sure the colored stripe on one sid e of thecable is aligned w ith p in-1 of the host ad apter s

connector. Pin-1 of the connector is usu ally d esig-nated by a sm all triangle ( v ), or a 1 on theconnector.

4 Plug the rem aining connectors on the cable intothe connectors on the backs of the d evices.

Make su re the colored stripe on the cable isaligned w ith p in-1 of the d evices connector.

5 Connect a DC pow er cable (from you r com-pu ter s pow er sup p ly) to the pow er conn ector onthe SCSI device.

Connecting External SCSI DevicesIf you are connecting external SCSI devices to yourhost adap ter, you m ust obtain an external SCSI cablefor each external d evice you install.

1 Prepare each SCSI device for installation ; config-u re the SCSI ID and attach a term inating p lug intothe last external d evice. For instru ctions, see thedevices docum entation as w ell as SCSI Configura-tion Guidelines on p age 2.

2 Plug th e connector at one end of the external SCSIcable into the host ad ap ter s external SCSIconnector.

Troubleshooting ChecklistIf you have a p roblem d uring installation , check these items first :

    s

Have you installed the host ad apter into a PCIRev 2.0 com pliant com pu ter?

s Are all SCSI d evices pow ered?

s Are all SCSI bus cables and pow er cables p roperlyconnected ? Is p in 1 oriented correctly?

s Does the host adap ter and all devices on th e SCSIbu s have un ique SCSI IDs?
