1 Ahimaaz To Warren Joseph Hibbard (Various Material) This is the earliest reference I have thus far to Ahimaaz. Later material will reveal the spelling variants of names common in records before the mid-nineteenth century. Ahimaaz is noted as the ship’s carpenter and came aboard 4 Feb. 1782. He was discharged 16 April of the same year after arriving in Virginia. This log information was originally published in the Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. XII, Lists and Returns of Connecticut Men in the Revolution, 1775-1783, Hartford, Connecticut 1909. Ahimaaz To Warren Joseph Hibbard (Various Material)

This is the earliest reference I have thus far to Ahimaaz. Later material will reveal the spelling variants of names

common in records before the mid-nineteenth century. Ahimaaz is noted as the ship’s carpenter and came aboard

4 Feb. 1782. He was discharged 16 April of the same year after arriving in Virginia. This log information was

1790 Census, Shaftsbury Town, Bennington County, Vermont

Above is a transcribed copy1 of the 1790 census. The exact census date is unknown. An actual copy of the original

census page is below. The original census files are available at http://archive.org/details/us_census. Choose the

year, then State, then the file with the Reel number as indicated. The latter will give you the census report for the

proper county.

Here “Ahimas Hibberd” (note spelling variants) is listed and the members of the household are probably as

follows: 1 free white male over 16 years, Ahimas DOB2 1759; 3 free white males under 16, sons Paul M. DOB

1784, Giles DOB 1785, and Joseph DOB 1787; 4 free white females, wife Asenath DOB 1758, daughters

Rebecca DOB 1789, Martha DOB 1792, and Elizabeth DOB 1795

1800 Census, Shaftsbury Town, Bennington County, Vermont (Exact Census Date Unknown)

As you can see, the categories have changed and have been expanded to include smaller age groupings. Only the

1810 census remained the same as the 1800.

Here we find Ahimaaz Hibbard. Members of the household are possibly as follows: 2 males under 10, unknown;

2 males under 16, sons Giles (age 15) and Joseph (age 13); 2 males under 26, Paul M. (age 16) and unknown; 1

male under 45, unknown; 1 male 45+, Ahimaaz (age 51).

For the females, 4 under 10, daughters Martha (age 8), Elizabeth (age 5), Polly (DOB 1799, age 1) and 1

unknown; 1 under 16, daughter Rebecca (age 11); 2 under 26, unknown; 1 under 45, wife Asenath (age 42); 1

woman 45 or older, probably mother Martha Dodge Hibbard, whose date of death (DOD) is listed as 1801. She

was a widow as of 1791 and her presence in her son’s household would have been expected.

This is the last census report in which we find Ahimaaz, although his listed DOD is 1822 in Shaftsbury. I have

examined the Shaftsbury data very carefully and cannot find him, although the rest of the family is there.

Therefore, I have concluded that the date of 1822 cannot be accurate. The evidence will be seen in the next two

census.

I have labeled the columns due to the poor quality of the image.

Here we find both Asenath “Hebard” and son Paul M., but listed separately. This would indicate that there were

two different households but next door to each other. Please note that Ahimaaz is not listed. To help understand

who lives where, I believe it would be helpful to know that Paul M. is now married (as of Feb. 1808) to Sally

Spencer and they have one daughter, Harriet Jane, born the year before.

In Asenath’s household we find 1 female under 26. This could be either of the daughters Rebecca (age 21) or

Martha (age 18). Since I do not know when either of these two girls were married, I cannot determine which was

living with mother. There is also 1 female 45+, Asenath.

In Paul’s household, 1 male under 45, himself (age 26); 1 female under 10, daughter Harriet (age 1); 1 female

under 26, wife Sally (age 22).

I will lead with the actual census page which clearly indicates Asenath Hebard as “Widow”. That Ahimaaz passed

away before 1820 is indisputable. It is also highly unlikely that he simply abandoned his family before the 1810

census. The only reasonable conclusion is that Ahimaaz passed away before the 1810 census.

In Asenath’s household, the female 45+ column is marked.

Paul’s household indicates 4 males under 10, Nathaniel (DOB 1812), George S. (DOB 1816), Warren G. (DOB

1818) and William Charles (DOB 1820); 1 male 26-45, himself (age 36); 1 female under 10, Lydia (DOB 1814);

1 female 26-45, wife Sally (age 32)

Also, the last column indicates one person (probably Paul) engaged in “Manufactures”, an older term for

manufacturing. There is nothing in the report to indicate what type of product was being manufactured, although

the 1870 Sullivan, Wisconsin, census shows his next son, Paul Jr. (DOB 1827), as a “Stone Mason.”

21 September 1850 Census, Sullivan Town, Jefferson County, WI NAME AGE SEX PROF., OCC., TRADE PLACE OF BIRTH

This is the first census where every family member is named. It is a shame this particular file is of such poor

quality it is difficult to read. The names and information are as follows:

Line 22 - Paul Hebard, age 60 something (would have been 66), sex M, occupation illegible, Connecticut

Line 23 – Sally (wife), age 60 something (would have been 62), sex F, no occupation, Connecticut

Line 24 – Warren (G.), age 343 (would have been 32), sex M, occupation Carpenter, Vermont

Line 25 – Paul Jr., age 23 (correct), sex M, trade illegible, Vermont

Paul Millard Hibbard died in 1852. The 1860 census shows his wife, Sally, living with their youngest son, Hiram,

and his family in Sullivan, WI.

29 June 1860 Census, Sullivan Town, Jefferson County, Wisconsin

Two columns, Real Estate and Personal estate Values, have been inserted between Occupation and Place of Birth. Otherwise,

it is the same as 1850.

Warren Gameleil Hibbard was married in 1851 to Catherine Bramin of New York (DOB 1832). This report shows

their children Paul Millard (DOB 1854), Alice Nancy (DOB 1856) and Clark (DOB 1858).

The 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 reports show a discrepancy in the date of birth of Warren G. His listed DOB

(hibbardfamily.com) is 26 March 1818. His reported age in 1850 is 34, indicating a DOB of 1816. This current

report indicates his age as 39, giving a DOB of 1821. As we shall see in the next two reports, his age is reported

as 51 and 61, giving a DOB of 1819. Until I can verify the exact year, I can only give his date of birth as “abt

1818/19”.

3 Son George would have been 34 years old but the name definitely is not “George”.

A fire at the Commerce Building, Washington DC., in January 1921 destroyed most of the 1890

Census documents. Few fragments exist today.

This census is the only one in this presentation which asked the month and year of birth, which makes it

important. Despite one’s level of education, it is much more likely that an individual will remember their date of

birth than they will be able to do the arithmetic necessary, in their head, to calculate their actual age at the time of

the census. Therefore, I have placed more “weight” on these stated dates than on those found in other census

reports.

Warren Douglas Hibbard married Katherine Cunneen of Troy, WI, in 1889 (later than 20 June). Here is their

family.

Warren Douglas Hibbard, white male, DOB January 1866, age 34, married 10 years

Kate, wife (Katherine), white female, DOB August 1867, age 32 (at date of census), married 10 years, gave birth

to 6 children. 6 children living

Nellie, daughter, white female, DOB December 1895, age 4, single

4 This date of birth is plausible only if she was born 21 December 1899 or later. Her age is listed as “5/12”, a notation method

established and specified in the 1870 census and also found in the 1880 census. The 1870 notation in the “Age” column reads

– “Age at last birthday. If under 1 year, give months in fractions. Thus 3/12”. In Anna’s case, she had not yet reached her 6

month birthday as of 20 June 1900

Kate, wife, female, white, age 42, married 21 years, gave birth to 8 children. 7 children living6

John, son, male, white, age 18, single

Mildred, daughter, female, white, age 13 (should have been 12 “at last birthday”), single

Gertrude, daughter, female, white, age 5 (DOB 1905), single

5 In the 1900 Census, Warren’s age was stated as 34. Thus, he should have been 44 in this census.

6 I have no data regarding the eighth child; could have been stillborn.

7 Column 19 is incorrect. Warren Joseph’s father, Warren Douglas, was born in the town of Jefferson, Jefferson County,

Wisconsin. 8 The age as written on the census page is “3 3/12”. The 1870 census established that, for persons under 1 year old, the

number of months shall be written as a fraction, e.g. 3/12. In this case, Vilas’ actual age “at last birthday” (18 December

1929) was 3 years.
