OVER & OUT

THE HUNTER HAS....... A VODKA WITH VOLKY

So Volks, every time I see you, you seem to be out on the oval, shovelling sand. Can you tell me where this fascination with sand began? It probably started back in my childhood, growing up on the China/Russia border. It was very cold up there, as we were situated near the mountains. I remember leaving on a holiday once when I was 6 years old, we had to cross the Gobi Desert - it was the first time I had ever seen sand. I was mesmerised – it was so beautiful. I have held on to this fascination ever since. So how much sand do you have around the house? I've got about 50 tonnes piled in my driveway at the moment; I have it on the floor of my house instead of tile or carpet. It's great - if I spill something I can just kick some sand over it. Never have to worry about breaking a glass or bottle, and no need for a kitty litter tray either. Well being a Russian, we know you enjoy vodka, but are there any other drinks that you particularly enjoy? Well I am quite partial to tequila as well. Did you know it is made from a type of cactus that will only grow in sand? If you weren't a teacher, what would your dream occupation be? Definitely a professional surf lifesaver, I'd be surrounded by sand all day every day. You've always been quite smooth with the ladies Volks, who is your dream date? It would have to be Sandy Olsson from the movie Grease, there's something about that girl. You were quite a talented cricketer yourself back in the day. Apart from cricket, which other sports do you enjoy playing and watching? Beach cricket is always a lot of fun, as well as beach volleyball, beach soccer, sandcastle building, basically anything where I can play in the sand. Finally Volks, any advice for all the AHOS cricketers out there reading this? The solution to all of life's problems is undoubtedly sand. If I pull a muscle, I bury myself in sand to aid healing. Curry not quite the right texture? Try a pinch of sand. If more people knew about the benefits of sand, the world would be a better place. Spread the word - sand is #1.

OVER & OUT

CAPTAINS REPORTS – Rounds 1 & 2 A Grade – Matt ‘MJ’ Loveder It’s been a tough start to the year for the A Grade with losses in both our first 2 games.

Our first game we played Brighton at Hunter Park, batting first making 126. We had

Brighton in trouble at 7 for 80, but they managed to pull a partnership together and

make the total with 3 wickets in hand. There were good signs from Andrew Giles with

the ball who we expect big things from this year.

We were unfortunately outclassed by Pembroke the next game, whilst we had a solid

bowling effort we again, failed with the bat being bowled out for less than a 100. New

comer Jason Coleman (aka “The Taswegian Rig) showed positive signs with the bat, as

did Brad Portlock.

Whilst we accept that it will be hard to replace Warren Mitchell as both a player and a

captain, I am certain the playing group will accept the challenges that lie ahead and

realize that success will only come as a result of hard work and a positive attitude.

I proud to lead the boys this year, which, will no doubt, will have its challenges, but I

have every confidence in the commitment of the group and the responsibilities that

come with representing the club at Turfs highest level.

With SPOC at home for Round 3, this is a must win game and very much a chance to

get the season off and running.

B Grade – Craig ‘Sugar’ Ridley Round one for last year’s runner ups was played down at Flinders Uni. New young gun Chris Hill opened the bowling with Pezza and the guys bowled tight and got us off to a good start. Con "Magic" Karatevillis completed a direct hit one stump to aim at run out to take the first wicket and that set the precedence for the day with excellent fielding, positive encouragement and regular wickets restricting Flinders Uni to all out for 140 form 42 overs. After the loss of any early wicket, Jockey and Wrighty steadied the ship and set up the basis for a comfortable 5 wicket victory. The highlight of our innings was a superb 101 not out by Aaron ‘Jockey’ Searl who opened the innings and batted with a combination of maturity; control and at times brute strength to single handedly take control of the game on a difficult batting deck.

After a good first up win it was important for the 2nd XI to back it up and that’s exactly what the boys did. We were asked to bowl first and young Hilly and Trooper

bowled with brilliant control set the standard for the day as we bowled Walkerville out in the last over for 120. At one point the cats were 1 for 43 after 25 overs with two of their top three bats having plenty of A grade experience which shows how disciplined the boys bowled. We set a high standard in the field especially the pressure we created in the ring. Once again young Chris ‘Chiller’ Hill was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 30 and veteran Matty Bartel took 3 for 33. Mark Trooper Davies was extremely unlucky and bowled with class conceding 17 off his 10.

OVER & OUT

CAPTAINS REPORTS CONT.... The key to chasing a tricky target is getting off to a positive start and Stoker and Jockey did exactly that putting on 82 in 27 overs for the first wicket and the rest was history. Stoker in particular was exceptional making 44 and proved how important getting to bed early is after his underprepared state in round 1 (ha - please take note DB). Con came in at 4 to finish the job smashing his way to 71 and that elusive century is closer every time this class act bats, taking our score to 7 for 199. SPECIAL WELL DONE TO SUGE AND JOCKY GILCHRIST, FOR THEIR KEEPING PERFORMANCES IN THIS GAME.

C Grade – Craig ‘Patto’ Patterson Unfortunately a slow start with two losses in our first two games against Payneham and Concordia, although one-dayers have never been our forte. On both occasions we made a good fist of chasing respectable totals, posting scores of 180 in both 40-over games, so there are some positives to take away. Loga started where he left off last season and played a captain’s knock in the game against Concordia with a solid 75 in his first innings. The Koshys have shown form-to-come: Nick scored 46 in his customary anchor role in the game against Payneham and Andre’s 23 against Concordia means that big score is not far away. Tony Marsland looks a threatening middle-order batsman on the basis of his two slugfests. Bowling and fielding look like the areas we need to improve and quickly if we aren’t going to give the others teams a big head start. We’ve let both Payneham and Concordia compile decent totals and we’re yet to bowl a team out. On paper this team is a winner – it just needs to play to its potential to get that winning feeling again.

D Grade – Chris ‘Pres’ Jones A great win in Round One with the boys recording a huge total on 353 on the back of 216 from Shep and 46 from Nick Kerin. Elders-Uni SA made a decent fight of it but were no match for the bowling of Pres and Shep, who snagged 3 wickets each. AHOS Elders Uni SA

WHO’S HOT & WHO’S NOT! Red Hot Ice Cold

Porters - maybe not red hot, but leading the A grade batting aggregate and leading Boon in a bet for total runs scored for the season (both have already passed their pre-Christmas totals from 2008/09)

The A Grade top order - with a H.S. of 31 and a highest partnership of 25 after 2 rounds, the boys need to do some hard work to avoid a disastrous start to the season.

Rids and the B grade in the minor round - 2 from 2 and something like 31 wins from 35 games over the past 3 seasons has Rid sporting a better success rate than Bradman, Waugh and Ponting.

Rids and the B grade in the finals - with 2 consecutive GF losses the cupboard is barer than the AHOS nets.

NSW Blues T20 team - each player pocketed a tidy $60K in the recent Twenty20 Champion League, a year's pay for some of the younger players

Port Adelaide Power - in big financial trouble and rumour has it that players will have to contribute $10 per game next season to pay for their half-time oranges and PowerAde.

Shane Shepherdson - smashed a lazy 216 in his first hit for the season, then followed up with 3 wickets in the LOE's.

Yatala inmates - may well be begging for the return of the death penalty after Shep gives ball by ball details of his innings while guarding them over the next few weeks.

Oz, Danno and Koshy - the three that have recently shown MJ the way to a woman's heart is by buying her a bloody big ring. Congrats to Oz on the wedding and Danno and Koshy on their engagements.

Coach Boon - the honeymoon is over and all I got was this lousy DVT on the flight home.

Hoochy - stoked after winning his first ever prize of any description at the club and pocketing $50 in the AHOS Powerball Raffle.

MJ - recently had to change his personal motto from "More money than Jesus" to "Slightly less money than Microsoft" after the Global Economic Crisis.

JC and Hooker - both won premierships with their respective footy sides this season. JC played in an A1 flag after missing out with Goodwood last year while Hooker ended a 4 grand final losing streak with a win in the Henley Div 7 side. Hooker topped it off by claiming the B & F as well - great work!

Charlie Giles - poor old Gilesy lost his second consecutive GF with Walkerville. Adding that to the 2 consecutive B grade cricket GF losses with AHOS, no-one would be surprised if Charlie was to be dropped out of the side for his next GF, he is obviously bad luck!

JC WATCH OCTOBER 2009

What happened?

Was on a sure thing at the

Brunswick the other night

(apparently), scoring an

early kiss, only to lose out

when he decided dancing

with DB would be more fun

than continuing to pay

attention to the lovely

young lady of his desires.

Verdict

Some nice early form from

the young fella, penetrating

the forward 50 early and

converting between the big

sticks with minimal effort.

Once again the pressure

and expectation got to JC

and after a series of blatant

clangers; Jakey was again

left on the bench and went

home alone. Some good

signs though for the rookie

early in the season.
