2007 ends and I hope the year muhave been a good one to all. We are all geared up welcome our new year 2008. AID Delhi declared 2007 as year of Education but to be honest we werenable to achieve the task of what we decided despsome good works in our projects, but that doesnt methat our resolution ends here. We have yet another yeahead and lets hope that we will be able to fulfill o vision in the coming year. Id like to come down quick review on last months activities without talkimuch about the entire last years work. The annu

report will be circulated later. When the mercury is dipping down, a f

volunteers came extended their warmer hands wblankets donation and Khoj Volunteers are collectiblankets and winter wears for the street children atheir families. The blanket donation drive is still Oand people can just contribute to it if they wish so.

We had a volunteer workshop this month athe workshop was specifically targeted to focus on chipsychology and in fact to find out the perception of our volunteers. Though the turnout was not great it w

a good event which evoked a lot of discussions. Lot new volunteers questioned about AID and its workiand they had a better picture at the end of the day.

December end also had AID India annuconference at ARTRC (AID Rural Technology anResource Center) at Orissa. The focus of the conferenwas on education and agrarian crisis. It was a wonderfexperience at the conference and a report / experienof mine at the conference is there as an article. Plearead it and you will be getting more knowledge on wh went on at the conference. Finally with all the oth AID India Chapters agreeing to the point, it w

declared that 2008 would be All India Agriculture ye with a over all campaign on Agrarian Crisis to staPhotos of the conference are uploaded to the AID Indgallery and can be viewed in the following addrehttp://gallery.aidindia.org/gallery/gallery2/v/AID+Inia+Annual+Conference/Orissa+2007/

The month of December was pretty dynamic as far asPrayas is concerned. It seemed as if the passing yearwas mocking us, of our dormant state and we repliedin vengeance. Winter it seems is inspiring us. Well, wehave experimented a lot and found it to be aprogression!Kudos to the all the active volunteers! Ourachievements for the same have come through arigorous brain-storming, and high commitment levelsof so many people.

    Lets me Take things Point-wise

We now have a class which looks like it(unlike the unregulated bunch we had for aclass!). By this, I mean that after weindividually tried the Eureka model (at times, not very successfully), and divided the kidsinto 3 categories, we found that almost everykid is lacking the recognition skills when itcomes to reading and writing the language. So, we started taking up a class for Hindi-Matras (Darshan single-handedly is managingthat very beautifully!); irrespective of the kidsearlier standing. Collectively, its working finefor the kids- they are better off.

A few more classes to go and they will be goodat recognizing the Hindi words. Of course, wehave exceptions, but they can be taken care ofIt will be a major achievement given the facthat most of these kids didnt even knowabout where and why matras should be used

We got a new White Board for ourselve Thanks to Atul! We started using Charts andended up getting a White board for ourselvesWe have put it up on the wall as well, its reallyhelpful. Guess, the kids are really excited abouit.

Notebooks and Pencils were distributed. Yeahwe arent leaving any stone unturned! Well, wedont make excuses; do we? All the kids wergiven notebooks for the work they do in th

class, which they submit back before leavingThats going to help us keep track.

Motivating strategies. To motivate the kids tobe regular and take this whole businesseriously, we take regular attendance and makesure we ask the absent kid (next time) abouthe reason of absence. As an added attractionwe introduced a prize to the most regular kidSince, we have geared up, there are many newfaces which have rejoined us, and example iAkbar. And yes, I am really glad that Afsana istill a regular in spite of her job

New Focus. We are not only working on thHindi language and matras but recently oufocus has been caught by a newer dimensioni.e. Making the kids express about what theyfeel, be able to put their stuff into words. Thisconcept is relatively recent, not much work habeen done on it, and suggestions by all thereaders are invited. We made each of the kidto speak about them - family, liking etc. Thisession was a real eye-opener, wherein we go

to know that they have so many siblings; thagetting attention from parents might just be adream for them..But, at least all of kids spokesome of them for the first time

    Ultimate Aim

We are looking towards making serious amendsto the existing scenario, which would mean.- Afull-time Teacher be dedicated to the kids(salaried, of course!). It has become almost apriority. If anyone f you know of someone whocan live up to the responsibility, we will like youto recommend the name.

Currently, we are inclined towards sending someof the deserving kids to a regular school (readNayi Disha). Well be identifying the kids whocan be groomed for it (in a matter of 3months);also the feasibility of the whole subject, whichincludes permissions from the school, as well asthe parents permission for letting their childrengo that far. This is a far-fetched goal, no plansso far only a vision which has to be developed!

We continue to run project Unnati successfulsince the last few months and we continue to identifnew areas/bastis, from where the children can comand start their elementary education. We have childrewhich are quite regular and are making good progres

On Saturdays, volunteers join update themselves witthe progress of the kids and participate in the fuactivities with children.

The highlight for the last month of the ye2007 was another project starting in sector 54 at construction site.

In the meanwhile, we are contemplating a tie u with another NGO which has collaborations w various private schools all over the country. Th

model is a very interesting one and it could be a versuccessful one for providing quality education to thunderprivileged sections of the society under thmodel this NGO uses the infrastructure of the privatschool like classes and in some cases buses etc. aftthe regular classes are over. Hopefully, by next montwed be enroll some of the kids from Unnati.

At the same time, we have met the DistrCommissioner and other prominent administrativofficials for various problems plaguing the city oGurgaon like inadequate public transport, bad road

lack of policing and poor standards of education in thgovernment schools in the city. We have been giveassurances and promises that the administration woulextend all possible support in raising our concerns witthe state government housed in Chandigarh.

In the next few weeks, we plan a visit to MobiCrches and take the kids to a picnic.

The challenges in front of us remain the neefor more committed volunteers.

    Project Update: Aashayen

Aashayen is in a all time worst situation andneeds your help in re-building it. There are a few newcommitted volunteers who have joined us. We areforming a team to lead the re-construction. The majorproblem being we are not able to gather all the children

during the class. A very few students turn up to the classand among them too a very few are showing interest instudying. We find it hard to have continuity in the classor in the teaching because of this.

In the last week meeting weve decided toconduct a fancy dress competition for children on Jan26th. This event will help us to bring in the parents intouch with us. Also we are looking for the help of old volunteers of Aashayen who were teaching them tocome back to the project for a few days and spend some

time with the children to bring them back the charisma.

Also we request volunteers to come forward totake the responsibility for organizing the Republic Dayevent.

Classes are going regularly at all the centers ofKhoj. The research plan to find out the number ofchildren in the outer ring road is soon to start with our volunteers involved in taking down the survey. The

objective of the research is clearly defined and thequestionnaire is also made. 25 signals have been sortedout. It has been decided that we will start to interact with the children by conducting a health camp overthere. This would help us to interact more with theparents.

A health camp was conducted at two centers byCEB. Also CEB people have helped us in making reportcard for everychild. The health report card has thephoto of every child on it and it could be used toidentify the status or health progress of every child. It

will also comprise the medical record of that particularchild.

We have a happy news to share and it is nothingbut the classes at Ber Sarai Center is about to start. Wehave got permission from MCD office to teach thechildren at the MCD school premises with a greatdifficuty . Now as per that we will be getting one classroom for us to teach the children and we also have gotthe opportunity to design the rooms according to our wish. So we are planning to put up posters and paste

charts all over the room which would be useful for thechildren while learning.

Winters are round the corner so there is a wintercloth drive still on and already lot of volunteers havepoured in clothes and those are being distributed to theneedy people. In case if any of you want to donate winter cloths you can approach Mr. Pawan or Mr.Zubair. Pawan and Zubair also attended AID India Annual Conference and they will be sharing theirlearnings with others.

The proposal for the raising funds for Khoj hasbeen sent to MONNET Foundation and we are still waiting for response. As of now Khoj also requiresmore funds.

Volunteering with AID India Delhi chapter, an experience which is not easy to put in words. Its onabout six months I am associated with AID so there not much to write. I have made some good friends anhope for thes ame in future!

Though every volunteer has different reasofor volunteering, I consider it as a responsibility - eithe

financially or by giving time, it depends on you as botare required. I was asked many times at variouplaces why volunteering? What will you get bthis? Why are you wasting time? The question is noabout why but WHY NOT? It is just abouutilizing your free time like a hobby in yanother constructive way.

As I do not live in Delhi, I am not able to givmuch presence, still it has made my life better. It is great learning experience while utilizing time in servincommunity. Physical presence while helping in an

project is important but there are other activities whiccan be done through internet. It is a very powerfmedium for creating awareness, increasing volunteenetwork and activities, raising funds, etc. which aressential for any organization to pace up its work

That's all for now.Hoping next year to be more activ

    Bhaiya Alaknanda?

    -Nahi.

    -Nahi.

    -Chalenge. 100 Rs.

Standing in CP on a chilly evening, my nightmare began

when ala true idealist I refused to pay 20 extra bucks to

the autowalah. I said to him,

Bhaiya complain kar doonga aapki. He said "kardo".

The chutzpah portrayed in this behaviour of that

autowalah may be attributed to his firm belief that

perhaps I was only bluffing. It was his lucky day though

for that day I had no choice but to bluff as my cell

    phone battery was dead.

These days when 2 autowalahs refuse to take me

to my desired destination, I, without too much

hesitation dial 01142400400 on my cell phone. I note

down the number of the autowalah and make sure that

he notices me noting down his number. I then register a

complaint against the autowalah right at his face after

which he flees. Then I move onto the next autowalah

while I am still on the phone with the guy who registers

complaints. If he refuses to go by the meter or refuses

to go at all, I register a complaint against him too. I keep

doing that until one agrees to go. Hence

    While(!an_autowalah_agrees_to_go_by_the_meter)

    {

File a complaint against the autowalah

    Move onto the next autowalah

    }

Ok that was a little geeky, but well that's what we a

should do if we are to straighten these Delhi

autowalahs up who have become a pain in my bac

quite literally as I am forced to go by the bus because o

    these blokes.

And in case you think these poor fellows should b

spared and not be denied their bread and butter, herare some facts for you (unverified though as they wer

told to me by my father):

    1) An autowalah has no right to refuse a ride to you.

    2) He has no right to not go by the meter.

    3) The price by the meter that you pay to the autowala

is more than enough to cover the entire round trip co

from the start to the destination and back to the startin

point. Hence if an autowalah tells you that he wont g

to your destination for he wont get any commuters o

the way back, you can always tell him to come bac

without any riders in that case. ;-)

So people hesitate not. Dial 42400400 and get som

    "auto" relief!

(In case you wish to discuss this further, get in toucwith me at [email protected]).

rticle: Making a difference Sonia SinghLet me enlighten you with the fact that no few

than 140,000 people live on the streets in Delhi, many are frozen to death in winter. The Delhi police they found 3,040 bodies during 2003 winter and figures seems to be increasing every year. For homeless, this is what winter means. It is their season

death, when life slips quietly away from freezing bodsleeping on dust and leftovers.

Moral of the story: You dont have to be Differeto make a difference.

    Sonia SinAID No

    sonia.dandsena@hc

4o centigrade and night was as common as it issupposed to be during any Delhi ki Sardi. 15 oddpeople from the common crowd met on Saturday night- reason a get together for alumni of AIM Army

Institute of Management. The purpose of this meetwas to go on a Blanket Drive where blankets will bedistributed to the unprivileged people on footpaths ofDelhi. This meet became a precious chapter in each oneof their livesYes it made a difference, a differencethat gave each one of them a reason to cherish allthrough their life.

Introducing the action part of that Saturday night Asa trend of AIM money was pooled in for this purposeon the spur of the moment and finally they landed up

with a fairest of fair deal that is 128 blankets with allthat they had for that night. They started thedistribution from Sarojini at 10:30 PM. The Purposebehind choosing such odd time was to give blankets tothose who genuinely needed it. And then the searchbegan .as they were carving their way through thedeserted roads of Delhi they came face to face withdeep inequities in the nation's social fabric.

As they proceeded, they saw people sleeping underflyovers, on rickshaws and roadsides coveringthemselves with rags, discarded papers, much-used

blanket and tarpaulin to keep them alive. The team was wondering if that was enough for survival and I amsure, they were thanking God for the privileged life theyhave. Rightly said by one of the team members...Forget grownups 4-5 years old children had nothingbut a shirt to bear the cold. They were wide awake waiting for morning when the temperature wouldincrease and they could sleep.

Covering areas like Ring Road, Ashram, Okhala, Nehruplace, Kalka ji, Narayana, Vikaspuri, Harinagar and

Nangal finally the drive came to a halt at 3:30 AM.Surprisingly before dispersing and standing with thatcup of tea in hand no one had much to say. All that they were left behind was a soul touching experience. Foronce they had fruitfully utilized Saturday night, unlikethe regular Saturday night Parties and for once theywere satisfied deep below their hearts.

The 10th Annual AID India conference hosted by ARTRC (AID Rural Technology Resource center), Orissa at Paralekhamundi frDecember 22nd to 24th. We three people from Dwent together (the way we reached there will be wrias a separate article as it has lots of adventures

When we entered into the ARTRC campus, I felt ASI was in a new world. We were surrounded by small hand a whole lot of agricultural land and the camputhe center. We reached there as the clock hit half pnine in the morning. A few people were going to ttheir bath and the ones who had already done with twere having their breakfast. Seeing Idlys there I decito have breakfast first and then go for the bath. We gwere a few among the last to arrive and everyone wasgeared to kick start the conference.

Once Ravi and Aravinda came we started

invite everyone for the session. Pawan and Zubair frKhoj foundataion were there with us and we star with a song. Then Mr. Debashish Padhi, direporter of SAMBAD lit up the light and inaugurathe conference. Dhanda then handed over the stageme and Satabdi as we were the conference conveners

We ensured everyone that this conferencewould be a different one as most of the sessions wouldbe interactive. A quick round of introduction was there. As scheduled, we decided to break for lunch and gatherback for our first session on Education. We had platesmade of leaves and brown rice with dal and subzi for

lunch. The delicious lunch was served in leaf plates toemphasize that this conference was an Eco-friendlyconference. The brown rice served was also morenutritious than the polished white rice we usually take. Water was kept in matkas and even water filters weremade in matkas.

After the delicious lunch just to make sure thatpeople dont go to sleep, Pawan and I gathered themtogether with a song. After the song the stage washanded over to Balaji to present AID TNs work oneducation. He, Ravishankar Arunachalam and

Dhamodaran shared the Eureka networks work and itwas inspiring to see how they moved into a larger areaof work in a short period. Balaji told us that things wereout of control even before they could realize thattheyve grown big. Later Lokesh shared his experienceof Eureka books network and how they worked toreach such a huge mass. It was decided to have a quickround of interaction with other chapters to talk abouttheir work on education. We had Kakinada, Hyderabad,Nellore, Srikakulam people sharing their work along with Delhi. AID Orissa also shared their work on

    READ ORISSA campaign.

Meanwhile there were stalls set by Jivika whichhad beautifully weaved cloths and some elegantly madekurtas etc. The pottery stall had a variety of items madeof mud. There was one stall by Pratham People andEureka books. People went across the stalls with mucheagerness to know whats going on. The pick of the stallwas the brown rice, raagi powder and the locally madedetergent powder.

Parallel to the Education session we also had ademonstration session on Organic Farming conductedby Mr. Anand Mor from Mumbai. Anand Mor alsoexplained the benefits of Organic Farming to the

farmers from the village. The farmers were quiteenthused with the ideas they got from Anand Mor andthey promised to give it a try when they start to cultivatein the next season.

We broke for an Eco-Friendly tea an when we returned it was my turn to present t Agricultural issue in the next session. I along wothers from Delhi was clear about what we were gointo discuss about this at the conference. As we all weralready aware of the issue, I raised a point about wha

AID India is planning to do for this issue? And whedo other chapters stand? There were a few questionraised and I called for an Agricultural Campaign by AIDIndia by declaring 2008 as AID India Agricultural year.

Time was up by then and we decided continue the discussion the next day and were planninto move for dinner but Dhanada had a surprise for uHe requested us to stay for the cultural program befordinner. It was a wonderful performance by children oParalekhamundi who did a splendid dance on VandMataram and a few Orissa bhajans. Then we moved t

have our Eco-Friendly dinner. By that time our SaathiMadhulika, Kamayani and Dharmendraji had arriveOur dinner got over by half past nine but none were ithe mood of taking rest or sleeping. So we thought ocontinuing with our agenda of knowledge sharinbetween the chapters. It was a bit chilling out there anwe gathered a few woods to make ourselves warm an we all sat around it. A cup of hot lemon tea keeveryone warm.

I started to share my experiences first, b

explaining AID Delhis work and similarly others camup with what they did. It was a mixture of fun anlearning there and the session went on for a couple ohours. Then we all departed to sleep as Dhandinstructed us to get up soon to have Yoga classes in thmorning. I was surprised to see the bed made of hay. then realized that hay is an insulator too (Ravconfirmed it the next day before we made hay boxesso that it will keep us warm in that chilling night.

Yoga session was over by the time I woke u

the next morning. I decided to call up people as soon apossible so that we could start our session soon. Wagain had a surprise waiting when Ravi told us that thconcept of the breakfast was to have what a villagperson has. A cup of raagi boiled in water, a cup of ricfermented in water from the previous night and a spooof spinach.

Wow! It was one of the most wonderfulbreakfasts of my life. Soon after enjoying the food weall gathered together with a song and I thought ofstarting the discussion on the agrarian crisis which wasleft out the previous night, but we all then made up ourminds to discuss the vision of AID India. The visionmeet continued for a couple of hours when we brokefor tea and realized that the session should be

completed here and to be continued later.

Parallel to this, there was one more session onOrganic farming demonstration again with Mr. AnandMor explaining things to the farmers and the villagersfrom Srikakulam. The session went on till lunch.

After the tea break we had our key speaker Mr. Ajay from APPVU (Andra Pradesh Vyavasaya Vridhidarlu Union) who gave us more insight on theissue of land rights. The way he explained the entire

concept was so enlightening and gave us a better picturefor the vision of AID India too. He has worked in thisfield for about 15 years and he believes that a lot moreneeds to be done.

Followed by his talk we had talks from ourSaathis Madhulika, Kamayani and Dharmendraji abouttheir work. It provided us more insight into NREGAand its implications. Madhulika shared her experienceson how she worked with the villagers of Rajasthan andKamayani told us about the social audit she did onNREGA at Rajasthan. We then broke for lunch and we

    had a village persons lunch.

Followed by lunch we were invited to participatein the hay box making session by forming groups. Peterexplained us how to make hay boxes. Hay box isactually used to cook rice, saving a lot of energy in theprocess. As I mentioned earlier hay being an insulator, itdoes not allow the heat to flow out. Hay is covered in abox to pack the box completely leaving some space tokeep our vessel inside. Rice is heated in water until itboils and once boiling starts, its removed from the

stove and kept inside the hay box and closed with a lidmade of hay box. After a couple of hours to the surpriseof all, the rice was cooked completely and later duringthe night when we checked it, it was still hot. They havebeen introducing this to the village people as this couldsave a lot of time for the village women who walk along distance to bring wood which is the fuel they usefor cooking.

We were told that all of us were going to vis JITM (Jagannath Institute of Technology Management) in the evening and they have providetheir conference hall for discussion. We went througJITM complex which was a huge but beautiful campuand settled down in the conference hall. I was enthuseto start the agrarian session again but Ravi felt that wshould have more hearing from our saathis, so w

invited Ravishankar Arunachalam who talked about thEureka maths kit and how his team is approachinschools with other new techniques, followed bDharmendraji who told us about his work with healtblock program at Bihar and NREGA work at Rajasthan Then Aravinda came up with her ideas whconcentrated on Child rights, food and nutrition.

Finally it was over to me when I called for a All India Agriculture Campaign and got the suppofrom all the chapters. Finally our discussion and woron agrarian crisis is not going to end here and it is goin

to continue. After that Balaji told us about thadministration part which is being taken care of by AIDHQ. We all were invited for a dinner sponsored b JITM. After the dinner we planned to screen a fedocumentary movies which we had and almoeveryone was motivated to watch them. We screenearound 2 movies and resumed to sleep after that.

I again woke up late to miss the Yoga sessiothe next day. After a quick breakfast, few of us sat dowto discuss the issues of RTI, anti-corruption and rurmarketing. Aravinda provided excellent ideas oinvolving more chapters in it and probably Ill start t

work on it soon. It was farewell time as AID Chennpeople were the first to start back and those weremotional moments which are unexplainable. Finally family gathering came to an end.

Hoping to meet everyone soon again durinAID India Annual Conference 2008.

Poem : Lion Hearted Arun Raj

The eyes of a dragon, in a breathe of fire.Anger alone his power and dare.

Face up to him as his snare unveil,At the burst of which we may swallow a whale.

This is life a dragon at heart,His intention none; but to make us strong at heart.

He likes to slay us once in a while,With no mercy is his own style.

Face away from him and be taken by his blow.Face up to him inside yourself to dare and grow.

My words so thus are my expression of faith,In a life that is a lion's respite and heaven's insight.
