MicroStrategy Cloud - Myths, Misconceptions & Misunderstandings

• Security is always the number 1 question...

– Cloud operations are typically more secure than enterprise data centres.

– Public clouds like AWS, Rackspace signed up to best practice / standards.

– Cloud 24/7 availability – inherently leads to a more consistent approach to

security than might apply in a enterprise data centre

– ‘Obvious’ targets demand the best and highest standards.

• Resilience (Performance, Failover) may be intermittent.

– For all the same reasons as above, Cloud providers very existence as a

business commands the best of everything in this regard.

– Don’t blame your comms (e.g. public internet) for poor cloud performance.

• A Cloud is a Cloud so I can buy the cheapest...

– No! Each provider will be optimised for a particular offering

• Compute and storage (IaaS)

• Basic business apps (Office 365)

• Premier Business Applications (MSTR Cloud platform)

• The ability to architect your cloud for your requirement is very powerful thing.

Page 23: Aiimi Insurance Breakfast Briefing

23

MicroStrategy Cloud - Myths, Misconceptions & Misunderstandings

• Everything in the cloud will run 100x faster and better!

– No, particularly legacy custom applications.

– Most new business requirements will perform equally as well or better in the

cloud, as in a enterprise data centre if architected correctly.

• Everyone else can see my data in the Cloud!

– Firstly, MSTR Cloud is not multi-tenanted so no issue there, but...

– There is not one documented public breach within a VM multi-tenanted

environment of this actually happening!

• Cloud is actually more expensive by my calculations?

– Eg for £150 per user per month I can buy the software and support it for less?

• Missing the point, A cloud subscription covers TOTAL system costs.

Page 24: Aiimi Insurance Breakfast Briefing

24

MicroStrategy Cloud - Myths, Misconceptions & Misunderstandings

• Cloud costs jobs and that’s a tough sell...

– There could be a loss of traditional IT system level jobs.

– IT is constantly evolving, in the example presented many more new skills will be

required to support the business and app users.

• Cloud is new, in it’s infancy.

– AWS was launched in 2006

– MSTR Cloud launched over 2 years ago, took almost 2 years to plan and build.

– Area od constant innovation and improvement as a core technology.

– Users adopting Cloud offerings now will reap longer term benefits.

• The huge cloud datacentres being built are not very ‘green’

– Some corporates are working hard to meet green targets and have actually

raised this with us.

– As computing power increases cpu and infrastructure does tend to become

more power efficient, it’s just that we do more with it, leading to growth in

requirements.

– Mobility / apps is a case in point. This growth (and others) will not stop.
