Aimhigher London Spring Term 2019 (Non-NCOP) Learner Progression Programme LPP Learner Events KS3 Aspire to HE Conference at Kingston University We began 2019 with our KS3 Aspire to HE Conference at Kingston University. We introduced 82 learners to subject pathways in order to support their GCSE option choices. They received workshop sessions on ‘Progression Pathways’ from our HEI partners, Kingston, St Mary’s, Roehampton and RVC. They explored student finance and budgeting with St Mary’s University and experienced an ‘Interactive HE Subject Fair’ with representatives from 8 of our HEIs, Ravensbourne, RVC, Roehampton, St George’s, St Mary’s, Goldsmiths, London Southbank and Kingston University. “I most enjoyed the fair because it opened my eyes to new possibilities and jobs and that it’s OK to make mistakes.” – Y9 Learner Y12 You@18 Learner Conference at St Mary’s University In mid Feb we headed to St Mary’s University for the Y12 You@18 conference. We welcomed 67 Y12 learners to sessions looking at their post 18 options and how to prepare for them. They experienced an opening address from St Mary’s Careers Team, a skills session for successful progression by Enlighten Education, a pathways focussed session on Apprenticeships vs University from Aimhigher London with the support of student ambassadors from Ravensbourne, RVC, Kingston, Goldsmiths and St Mary’s University and Apprentices from Tideway and the Civil Service. The learners also experienced a guided tour of the campus and a closing motivational session from Karim Al-Abbas from Enlighten Education. “A great motivating day. Y12 You@18 Learner Conference at St Mary’s University

Y10 KS4 HE Skills for Progression Conference at University of Roehampton In March we delivered our KS4 Skills Conference at University of Roehampton. 118 Y10 learners attended sessions aimed at skills needed for successful progression onto Higher Level learning and the future job market. St Marys University delivered a study skills session on being a ‘21st Century Student’ and CoachMandy highlighted Skills for employability. Roehampton led the afternoon with a parliament style ‘Great Debate - Apprenticeships Vs University’ and a student led pathway focussed campus tour.

Preparing to Progress – Transition SEND Learner Conference at Kingston University

Our annual KS5 SEND Conference aimed at supporting the transition of SEND learners to university was hosted at Kingston University at the end of term and welcomed 54 delegates. Sessions included ‘Maximising success and potential’ from Suna Marfe, Head of Admissions for South Thames Colleges Group, ‘Evidencing your Disability and the DSA’ from Helen Duncan and Michael Cobden St Marys University Wellbeing Team. With additional sessions on Assistive Technology, Specialist study support and Disclosure.

Y12 Creative Industries Conference at Ravensbourne University London

We ended with The Creative Industries Conference aimed at KS5 at Ravensbourne University. We welcomed 52 learners to experience a mini lecture from Goldsmiths University on How to go Viral followed by mini tasters from Ravensbourne on Graphics and TV/Media production. Later sessions focussed upon transition with ‘What Creative HEIS are looking for’ Ravensbourne University and an insight into industry from Singer/Vocalist Lara DeBelder. Learners discussed the next stage with Student Ambassadors from Goldsmiths and Ravensbourne University.

Y12 Clinical Skills Days at St Georges University of London Also this term we organised two Clinical Skills days at St Georges University of London. This was aimed specifically at Y12 learners who were interested in careers within Medicine and Healthcare. We welcomed 62 learners over 2 days where they experienced introduction talks to health careers, clinical skills tasters led by current Medical/Clinical students and sessions on supporting the application process to Medical/Health related courses.

CPD and Staff Development SEND CPD Conference – ‘Greater Collaboration: Multi Agency working, aspiration or reality?’ at St Mary’s University

In February we held our Staff CPD SEND Conference at St Mary’s University and welcomed 60 delegates, this was organised through the Disability Working Group and included sessions that looked at collaborative working to support SEND transition. sessions looked at ‘Service user informed practice’ from practitioner Jude Smit, ‘Supporting SEND into adulthood’ from Julie Pointer, research presented from Professor Nicola Martin of LSBU on ‘working together to support SEND transition into HE’. Michael Cobden and Helen Duncan from the DWG presented ‘Where employability meets Curriculum’ and ‘Best endeavours in Health and Education’ from Maureen Banda of NHS England. Apprenticeship and Employability CPD at LSBU

We completed our CPD this term with an afternoon dedicated to Apprenticeships and Employability Training in late February, in preparation for national careers week held at the Passmore Centre of London Southbank University. This opened with a session from Alison May Head of LSBU Apprenticeship Team to inform of their requirements and offer of their Higher and Degree Apprenticeship courses at LSBU. This was followed by a session on the latest updates on apprenticeships from Education and Employers including an overview, context, research and useful tools for teachers. The afternoon was finished off with an inspiring session from a Logistics apprentice from TFL.

Targeted Groups

LAC Further work was done this term to set up the new project for working with young people in care to support them into university. The ‘Your Future Your Choice programme’ has recruited 11 young people from years 8-13 from Merton, Richmond, Wandsworth & Harrow and matched with under-graduate coaches from our university partners. We hosted 2 welcome events for the young people and their coaches at Merton College and at Harrow Civic Centre and they were offered one to one careers advice. The YP are currently meeting with coaches twice a month and next month will attend a group HEI visit.

SEND The Disability Working Group continued to meet this term and were instrumental in working with us to bring about the Learner SEND conference and Staff SEND CPD conference this term. Details above.

MORE ABLE The ‘Debate Higher’ Oracy Project aimed at KS3 learners continued this term with a visit to Royal Veterinary College to look at ‘Morals and Ethics’. They debated the importance of ensuring that information and arguments are based upon a good ethical basis through looking at 3 key areas of scientific development in Veterinary medicine and what would be the implications if they were transferred to human medicine. We welcomed our five schools and 50 learners to this and they were treated to a sample of a first year lecture from RVC academic Madeline Campbell. The learners were supported by a range of RVC students and also an ambassador from Goldsmiths University. Bespoke

Carshalton Boys Sports College Year 8 Parents Eve 31st Jan was supported by SAs from St Mary’s University.

Some of our HEIs supported Swanlea School Careers Fair on 14th Feb, stands and SAs from Goldsmiths, Kingston and St Mary’s University

A Medical talk was delivered by St Georges University at Coombe Federation of Schools on 26th Feb at an ‘Early Entry/Medical Parents event’. In addition Subject related stands were manned by SAs from St George’s, Kingston University and RVC.

Three of our HEIs supported a ‘KS4 Careers event’ to learners at Ricards Lodge High School 1st March. This was supported by Roehampton, Goldsmiths and London Southbank University.

AHL delivered a series of workshops to Year 8 pathway planning for GCSE options to Carshalton Boys Sports College Directions and Destinations day 8th March. In addition AHL and multiple HE partners including St Mary’s, Roehampton, St Georges, Kingston and London Southbank University had interactive information stands to support all years.

AHL delivered a ‘HE vs Apprenticeships talk’ to Parents of mainly KS3/4 at Ricards Lodge High School on 20th March. Supported by SAs from Goldsmiths and Roehampton University and an apprentice from London Southbank University.
