THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. BASIL THE GREAT 8:30 AM Liturgy: Congregational Singing We will be using the blue-covered Congregational Liturgy books found in the pews this morning for the 8:30 AM Divine Liturgy. Check the Early Liturgy supplement for music for the Troparia of the day.

10:30 AM Liturgy: St. Elias Choir The Divine Liturgy may be found in the white Visitor’s Liturgy books. When we reach the point in the service for Antiphons and hymns, the ones for today's service are listed below and on the next page.

1st Antiphon (from Psalms 4, 59, 67, 60) The light of Thy countenance, O Lord, hath been signed upon us. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us. Thou hast given a sign unto them that fear Thee, that they may flee

from before the face of the bow. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us. Thou hast ascended on high, Thou leddest captivity captive. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us. Thou hast given an inheritance to them that fear Thy name. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: now and

ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us.

2nd Antiphon (from Psalms 95, 131, 73, 112, 96) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Save us, O Son of God, who art risen from the dead, who sing to

Thee: Alleluia! Let us worship at the place where His feet have stood. Save us, O Son of God… God is our King before the ages, He hath wrought salvation in the

midst of the earth. Save us, O Son of God… High above all the nations is the Lord. Thou art Lord Most High

over all the earth. Save us, O Son of God… Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: now and

ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

and “Only-begotten Son…”

3rd Antiphon —Troparion of the Cross (Tone 1)

Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship the footstool of His feet. O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting victory to Thy people over their adversaries; and by the power of Thy Cross, preserving Thine estate.

Save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. O Lord, save Thy people….

Shepherd them and bear them up unto eternity. O Lord, save Thy people….

The Daily Hymns Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 7)

hou didst shatter death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open paradise to the thief; Thou didst turn the mourning of the

myrrh-bearing women into joy, and didst bid thine apostles proclaim that thou hast risen, O Christ, granting the world great mercy.

Troparion of the Holy Cross (Tone 1) Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting to Thy people victory over all adversaries, and by the power

of Thy Cross, preserving Thine estate.

Troparion of the Prophet Elias (Tone 4) he incarnate Angel and the Prophets summit and boast, the forerunner of the second coming of Christ our God, Elias the

glorious, from above sent down his grace upon Elisha; he doth cast out sickness and doth also cleanse lepers; and unto all that honour him, he poureth forth streams of cures.

Kontakion for Great Lent (Tone 8): o thee the Champion Leader do I offer thanks of victory, O Theotokos, thou who hast delivered me from terror; but as

thou that hast that power invincible, O Theotokos, thou alone can set me free: from all forms of danger free me and deliver me, that I may cry unto thee: Hail, O Bride without bridegroom.

The Lectionary Prokeimenon in Tone 6 (from Psalm 27) O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry; O my God, be not silent to me. The Reading is from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews (4:14-16; 5:1-6).

rethren, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we

have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said, “Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee”; as he says also in another place, “Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

Alleluia Verses in Tone 6 (from Psalm 73) Remember Thy congregation which Thou hast purchased from the beginning. God is our king before the ages; He hath wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.

The Holy Gospel — St. Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 he Lord said, “If any one would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life

will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” And Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”

Today’s Commemorations Prayers are requested for those on the St. Elias Prayer List: Nader Jaber,

Sh. Laura Sanders, Martha Dent, Adele Homsieh, as well as Tereza, Emily, Yekaterina, and Mother Eisothia.

Please also remember our catechumens: David Ballard; Jacob Benevides; Rachel Esler; Zach Flaten; Robbye Kirkpatrick-Schroeder; Luke Kubena; Nicholas Lynch; Geoffrey Miller; Scott, Melody, Jason and Michaela Schroeder; Raul, Ali, and Simon Scully; Joseph Snyder; Josh Stemper; Samuel Yang; Joseph Clint; and Wilson Whitener.

Prayers are requested by Bishop BASIL for Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo, Syria, and the Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Youhanna (John), also from Aleppo, Metropolitan Saba and the clergy and people of our sister diocese of Bosra-Hauran, Marie Dunaway-Bell, Khouriya Elizabeth Bethoney, Asher Bourqin, Father Daniel Griffith, Father Michael and Khouriya Angelina Keiser, Khouriya Anne Kenna, Father Basil McMurray, Father John & Khouriya Cheryl Morris, Archdeacon George and Shamassy Linda Palmer, Vera Petranek, Father Stephen and Khouriya Joan Walinski, and Khouriya Jody Williams.

At the Divine Liturgy during the Great Entrance, we normally commemorate only Orthodox Christians by name among the living and departed since this is the Church praying for the Church. Non-Orthodox are remembered liturgically in prayers at Vespers and other intercessory services of the Church.

On Receiving Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church: Only Orthodox Christians who are prepared through prayer, fasting, and a recent sacramental confession should approach the Chalice for the Eucharist. The Orthodox Church does not practice “open communion” and has no intercommunion with other churches (non-Orthodox). If you have any questions concerning this, please talk to one of the priests before taking communion.

And Remember… …to receive Holy Communion, one should be present at the Divine Liturgy no later than the time for the Epistle and Gospel readings. We feed both our minds and our hearts as part of the Orthodox Christian life. To feast on the Lord without listening to his words is disrespectful.

Prayers for the Anaphora for the Liturgy of St. Basil… …will be found on page 134 and following in the red service book or in the Visitor’s Liturgy Book in the pews. Instead of “It is truly meet…” In thee rejoiceth, O full of grace… (p. 139) The Communion Hymn (from Psalm 4): Refrain: The light of thy countenance, O Lord, hath been signed upon us.

Verse 1: Thou hast given gladness to my heart. Verse 2: From the fruit of their wheat, wine and oil are they multiplied. Verse 3: In peace in the same place I shall lay me down and sleep.

Instead of “We have seen the true light…” O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting victory to Thy people over their adversaries; and by the power of Thy Cross, preserving Thine estate.

Trisagion Prayers are offered for Jordanka Nikolova (40 days) by her daughter Tatiana Nikolova-Houston. May her memory be eternal.

Procession of the Holy Cross After the prayer behind the Ambon at the second Liturgy, the procession of the Holy Cross takes place around the Church as in the Great Entrance as the Choir slowly sings “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us.” When the procession reaches the Ambon, the priest and deacon process around the table 3 times. After the third time, the priest, facing east, says: PRIEST: Wisdom! Stand upright! CLERGY: O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance,

granting victory to Thy people over their adversaries; and by the power of Thy Cross, preserving Thine estate.

PEOPLE: O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting victory to Thy people over their adversaries; and by the power of Thy Cross, preserving Thine estate. (twice)

The following hymn is sung during which the clergy and the people make a prostration after each verse: CLERGY: Before thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master;

and thy Holy Resurrection we glorify. PEOPLE: Before thy Cross we bow down in worship, O Master;

and thy Holy Resurrection we glorify. (2 times)

he Harry and Florence Kouri Scholarship is available for a 2017 DOWAMA Graduating High Scho

ol Senior. For more information on this and other scholarships, go to www.antiochian.org/scholarships. The deadline for this scholarship is April 23. Did You Know? Have you noticed the Kontakion used each Sunday during Lent calls the Theotokos “Queen of war” or “Champion Leader”? Listen carefully. “To Thee Our Captain” is sung each week in the Akathist service (Friday night) and as the Sunday Kontakion. The Akathist is a hymn to the Theotokos composed in 626 in gratitude for the deliverance of Constantinople from a siege by the Persians. After the enemy’s fleet and forces withdrew, all of the people rushed to the Church Temple and stood throughout the night singing praises to the Theotokos and thanking her for interceding in their deliverance. We continue singing praises for her daily intercessions 1400 years later, just as the Christians in Constantinople did.
