2 DECEMBER 2016
Dear Member,
In 2016, Chicago and the world marked the 400th anniversary of the passing of William Shakespeare with a variety of events. As this year draws to a close, WTTW is proud to bring back the distinguished Hollow Crown series with three of the Bard’s stirring history plays – Henry VI, Parts I and II and, on Christmas night, Richard III starring popular British stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Judi Dench. Both of these renowned actors are also part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s gala celebration,
Shakespeare Live!, which also includes appearances by David Tennant, Joseph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, David Suchet, and a very special royal guest.
In December, we’ll offer a variety of music on WTTW11 for every taste, whether it’s country legends Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Ray Price; André Rieu, the King of the Waltz; pop superstars The Carpenters; opera great Placido Domingo; Broadway star Laura Osnes and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir; choral ensembles from St. Olaf and Wheaton Colleges; the Boston Pops; the New York Philharmonic; and notably Welsh crooner Tom Jones, in a new Soundstage concert recorded in the WTTW Studios earlier this year. American Masters profiles the legendary architect Eero Saarinen; Great British Baking Show experts Mary Berry and Paul
Hollywood present several fun and informative Masterclasses; Call the Midwife returns with a new holiday special; and don’t miss the new Navy Pier: A Century of Reinvention with Geoffrey Baer and its accompanying immersive mobile website at wttw.com/navypier.
This month, WFMT heralds the return of live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera on Saturdays. The December presentations include Hansel and Gretel in the afternoon of Christmas Eve. Our holiday features include the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols live from King’s College Chapel at Cambridge University, plus a performance of Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus in honor of Hanukkah, sung by Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. And Live from WFMT will feature a holiday concert by Chicago’s Bella Voce, and a recital by pianist Matt Hagle, who continues his Levin Studio Beethoven cycle. Enjoy much more digital content, including fine arts news and feature stories, weekly quizzes, playlists, live streaming, and more at wfmt.com.
On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I extend best wishes to you and your family for a warm and wonderful holiday season. Please consider an additional holiday gift, and thank you for your year-round support which makes all of this possible.
Sincerely,
Dan SchmidtPresident & CEO

The highly anticipated new MASTERPIECE series – Victoria – follows the drama of the candid, spirited monarch who was perhaps the first woman to seem to have it all. Join us on the eve-ning of January 11 for a screening of the premiere before it airs on WTTW11.
In 1837, a diminutive, neglected teenager is crowned Queen Victoria, navigates the scandal, corruption, and political intrigues of the Court, and soon rises to become the most powerful woman in the world. This new eight-part drama follows Victoria from the time she becomes Queen in 1837 at the age of 18, through her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. Famous for her candor and spirit, Victoria’s often tumultuous reign lasted for 63 years; she was England’s longest-serving monarch until she was overtaken by Elizabeth II in September 2015.
Tickets to this special premiere event will be available on wttw.com/events in December 2016.

Hyde Park School of Dance (HPSD) offers its annual presentation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, featuring 206 dancers – from four-year-olds to grandparents – supported by more than 100 volunteers. This year’s performances contain a new ele-ment: a hip-hop dance battle to showcase the range of dance genres HPSD offers, as well as send a message of peace – instead of battling with swords, the mouse-soldiers use hip-hop as their “weapons.”

Music for ChristmasDecember 7: An hour of Carols and Cheer is hosted by Scott Blankenship and Matt Culloton.
December 14: The singers of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are famous for year-round performances, but the music of Christmas brings out the very best in their artistry.
December 21: The male vocal ensemble Chanticleer is world-renowned for the sensitivity and sheer beauty of its singing. New for 2016, this holiday performance by the group will range wide over songs from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, traditional carols, and folksongs.
