In little more than a decade, vehicle air conditioning has gone from luxury to motoring necessity – it is a standard feature on the vast majority of new vehicles and the used vehicle sector also favours those with A/C.
As a consequence, A/C brings significant additional revenue opportunities through servicing, recharging,
repairs, anti-bacterial cleaning and performance testing. Franchised and non-franchised workshops, fast fit operations and body repairers can easily install the necessary equipment and train technicians to carry out the work. There is no need to use sub-contractors which may otherwise cause delays, reduce profitability and put quality control at risk.
As the population of vehicles with A/C grows, so does the need for servicing and repairs, particularly on older vehicles. To expand the opportunity further, more and more vans, commercial vehicles, plant and agricultural vehicles are now being equipped with A/C as standard.
There is no question that A/C represents a significant, long term opportunity to generate more revenue,
increase profitability and to deliver a greater range of value-added services to customers.
In tandem with its class-leading products and services, Autoclimate has the expertise, track record and the experience to guide its customers through every aspect of A/C servicing and repair.

A/C servicing - makes money, makes sense
Any electrical or mechanical equipment is subject to wear and tear. Over time, components can become less effective, lose efficiency and may ultimately fail altogether. A/C systems are no different. Most commonly, they may lose refrigerant which results in weaker cooling and increased fuel consumption – something that few motorists would appreciate.
A simple performance test, using an automatic refrigerant service station can quickly diagnose whether a service is required and identify any particular problems. The additional cost of doing this whilst a vehicle is in the workshop is minimal and yet may be chargeable work. The benefit is that with a service completed, customers will be immediately satisfied – their vehicles’ A/C systems will be performing better and there is every chance that fuel consumption will also improve.
Servicing may also identify repair work which can then be offered to the customer and they may, for example, also be interested in anti-bacterial cleaning treatments. (see page 24)
For many servicing and repair workshops, A/C servicing remains an untapped profit opportunity. To understand more about how Autoclimate can help, a dynamic illustration, based on specific business information, is available on request.
The Business Case
Low cost – excellent return
Based on customer experiences, a new, fully automatic refrigerant management station has the potential to pay back its original investment within 6-12 months. And beyond that, all revenues generated by using the equipment is virtually all profit.
The illustration shows the return on investment for a typical workshop and makes a very clear case for A/C servicing. There is a minimal labour requirement, consumable costs are low and it is quite possible for A/C work to become one of the most profitable service activities.

Legislation
Legislation mattersThe threat of climate change is well known and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol established binding agreements to reduce man-made emissions of greenhouse gases. In 2002, the European Council approved these agreements which covered a range of gases including R134a – the refrigerant used in automotive air conditioning equipment.
Since these initiatives were introduced, the current F-Gas Regulations have been working their way into law across EU member states.
The Law:
• Since September 2009 it has been a criminal offence
to charge a system with R134a without reasonable due
diligence being undertaken to ensure that there are no leaks
in the system.
• Since July 2010 anyone handling refrigerant to service or
repair car or light commercial vehicle A/C systems, must
hold a nationally recognised qualification.
Key Fact
R134a, the refrigerant used in vehicles built after 1993, has a global warming potential (GWP) 1,300 times higher than Co2. Even relatively small amounts of refrigerant lost to the atmosphere will cause an adverse effect to climate change.

Refrigerant Handling
Training - Refrigerant Handling CertificationAs a market leader in automotive air conditioning, Autoclimate takes its responsibilities on compliance and legislative requirements very seriously. With its wide ranging knowledge and expertise, Autoclimate was selected by the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) to provide expert input throughout the DEFRA consultation process that ultimately shaped the implementation of the F-Gas regulations. As a consequence of this, the company is uniquely qualified to provide Refrigerant Handling Certification for its customers.
The arrangements available are simple, flexible and cost-effective. One option is to attend formal training courses at the Autoclimate Training Centre, although before making such a commitment, it is recommended that on-site assessment is considered. On-site assessment involves less cost and disruption and there is no formal training requirement. Simply make a booking and an information pack containing all the requirements will be sent out. When the preparations have been completed, an Autoclimate assessor will attend and, if the pass level is achieved, the candidate will be awarded their City & Guilds 5101-94-301 certificate.
• On-site training
• Off-site training at the Autoclimate Training Centre
• Minimum skills and knowledge handbook
• Assessment by qualified engineer
• City & Guilds 5101-94-301 certification awarded
Key Fact
City & Guilds 5101-94-301 is a ‘lifetime qualification’. There are no subsequent re-test or top-up requirements and therefore represents a very cost effective investment.

Training - Onsite
Training - SafetyIn common with many types of repair and service activities, working with vehicle air conditioning systems carries some fundamental responsibilities. There are inherent risks when working with refrigerant gases and pressurised environments and without question every safeguard must be taken.
To help meet these requirements, Autoclimate provides customers with both operator and vocational level training for their technicians and service personnel.
The vital elements:
• Training in the use of designated equipment according to
manufacturer instructions and guidelines
• Working in a safe and secure manner, including the use of
designated safety and personal protective equipment
• Understanding of the principles and technologies relating to
air conditioning servicing and repair
• Proving continuity to ensure that training is not regarded as
a one-off consideration. Staff changes, new developments
and technologies give rise to new training requirements and
refresher training
Operator TrainingAs part of the installation process for each Robinair RMS unit, the commissioning engineer will carry out a basic operator training session for the specific RMS – at no additional charge.
Up to 4 technicians can be trained in a single session of about 2 hours duration covering:
• Refrigerant recovery
• System vacuum
• Gas re-charge
At the end of this session, technicians will be issued with a certificate to confirm that they are able to operate the specific refrigerant management station in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner.
Please note: It is a legal requirement that technicians hold the City & Guilds Refrigerant Handling Certificate prior to receiving operator training.
14
Training - Vocational
Autoclimate offers a comprehensive vehicle air conditioning training programme which takes place at the company’s training centre in Shrewsbury.
Knowledge and expertise is developed in logical stages throughout the six module programme (see page 15) by starting with an introduction to air conditioning the technician is then able to understand the more complex topics later in the programme.
In order to obtain the maximum value from the programme it is recommended that all modules are completed, with an interval of 3-6 months between each one.
The modules are well structured and work towards desired outcomes at each stage. The theoretical explanations are supported by detailed illustrations, practical exercises, workshop activity and classroom assessments where multiple choice is used to minimise written requirements.
Prior to starting the training programme, the technician can register for a City & Guilds Profile of Achievement – this is then awarded on completion of the final stage.
Training Manual
The Autoclimate Training Manual, covering all six modules, is available for purchase – there is no requirement to attend the training programme.
• Go from beginner to expert within weeks
• Clear modular structure develops knowledge in simple
easy-to-follow stages
• Step-by-step procedures for service, diagnostics and repair
• 300 pages of explanation, illustration, diagrams and
photographs to aid understanding

Important: Some dye manufacturers use Aromatic 200 solvent to disperse UV dyes. This product was originally designed for lacquers and also used in pest control. It is not suitable for automotive A/C as it may affect lubrication - causing wear, a higher risk of equipment failure and may invalidate warranty.
Autoclimate use Tracerline®
• Solvent free additive dyes• VM approved, OE supplies• Ultra-bright fluorescing dyes• Particle free solution dyes • High intensity detection lamps• Wide choice of kits and systems• Dyes for other fluids available
Leak Detection
Detecting A/C leaks is essential to protect the environment and prevent time consuming and expensive problems. Autoclimate supplies a range of equipment and consumables for electronic, ultra violet dye, pressure and ultrasonic solutions. See pages 30-35.
ElectronicAudible and visual sensors alert the presence of leaks. Variable intensity helps to pinpoint leaks quickly and accurately.
Ultra Violet DyeAfter UV dye is added, leaks fluoresce under UV light where the dye has escaped. It is recommended to invest in quality high concentration UV dyes and high intensity UV lamps - small leaks are then easier and quicker to identify.
Please note: When ordering dye for the first time, delivery mechanism, torch and visibility enhancing glasses will be also required.

By pressurising the system with oxygen-free nitrogen, leaks can be found by applying bubble spray to the accessible joints and unions.
Pressure using oxygen-free nitrogen
Ultrasonic technology filters ambient noise and amplifies key frequencies to pick up the ‘hissing’ sound of escaping gas. This approach is ideal for use with pressure testing equipment.
Ultrasonic
Key Fact
The Autoclimate Ultrasonic Marksman 2 kit is also ideal for detecting air leaks, gear or bearing wear and gasket integrity.

Anti-Bacterial Cleaning
Autoclimate recommends that vehicle air conditioning systems are run all year round. In addition to reducing service and maintenance problems, A/C also dehumidifies the air entering the vehicle and also filters soluble or very fine airborne contamination.
It is important to appreciate that year round running means that an A/C evaporator will remain almost permanently damp – a perfect breeding ground for mould, viruses and bacteria. Drivers may not be aware that stale or unpleasant odours are likely to be coming from the A/C. It isn’t always just a minor irritation, more unpleasant symptoms like coughs, colds or allergies may also develop.
The OpportunityA/C anti-bacterial servicing is a worthwhile and profitable opportunity and customers will appreciate the benefits immediately.
Autoclimate offers two solutions:
Autofresh One Shot
This combined A/C cleaner and deodorant is the perfect ‘quick fix’ to keep on the shelf.
To apply:
• Start the engine, set temperature to cold, fans to
maximum, recirculation on and open face vents
• Shake the can well, slide the passenger seat right back
and place the can in the footwell
• Close the windows, press the button to start the spray
and exit the vehicle
• Return after 20 minutes to a fresh smelling vehicle
Ultrasonic Nebuliser
To tackle the problem at source, this system uses ultrasonic technology to disperse very fine droplets of the anti-bacterial cleaning solution directly into the A/C evaporator. It is a professional level system that is ideal for longer lasting results, or where the problem is particularly acute or persistent – only requires minimal labour time.
To apply:
• Use one bottle of solution per vehicle
• Place the nebuliser in the passenger footwell with the
outlet tube running to the air recirculation inlet valve
• Run the vehicle with the A/C off, heater at minimum
temperature and low fan speed
• Close all doors
• Return after 20 minutes to a fresh smelling vehicle
