The Air Handling Unit (AHU) is the lung of your hatchery, it conditions the air by cooling, heating, humidifying or dehumidifying the outside air. This conditioned air gets then distributed to the rooms in your hatchery and even more important to your setters and hatchers. With the Petersime AHU, you choose for a long-lasting solution without giving in on bio-security or chick quality.

No matter what size your hatchery will be, Petersime has the fitted AHU to condition your outside air. Every module is equipped with a latch on one side for easy access to all the essential parts during maintenance.

Modules

Description

| BF | Bag filterThe bag filter is the second filter in line after the flat filter, it filters particles larger than 1 µm (e.g. fine dust, bacteria). Together with the flat filter this is an impenetrable protection of the bio-security of your hatchery. The BF module is equipped with a pressure gauge to check the pressure drop caused by the filter. If the pressure drop is too high, the filter needs to be replaced, keeping a high level of bio-security.

| FF | Flat filterFilters are used to keep out dirt and air pollution, this way we assure the best air quality in your hatchery. Moreover, the coils need less maintenance because they are spared from dirt, assuring the continuity of the AHU. The first filter in line is a flat filter, this keeps out the dust particles larger than 10 µm (e.g. sand, pollen, fog).

| SD | Shut-off damperThe first module in line is the shut-off damper, this device is used to shut off the complete AHU from the outside. If the frost section gets triggered, the shut-off damper will shut down the AHU to protect the filters and coils. Also, when the AHU needs maintenance, the shut-off damper can close off the AHU from the outside to avoid dirt from entering the unit.

| FS | Frost sectionWhen there is a risk of freezing, a frost sensor will be installed. If the frost sensor gets triggered, the shut-off damper of the AHU will be shut down to protect the filters and coils. If a pre-heating is installed, the frost section will be at the air intake of one AHU, usually the AHU providing air for the setter room. If there is no pre-heating installed, the frost section will be installed behind the first coil of every AHU.

| FN | FanThe fan is the final module of the air handling unit. It distributes the conditioned air throughout the hatchery at a constant pressure. The fan is connected to a frequency driven motor, this solution consumes less energy and requires less maintenance compared to a belt-driven solution.

| HU | HumidifierThe humidifier is the module responsible for humidifying the air, the humidifying process will also cool down the air. This module consists of a humidifying mat separated into 1/3 and 2/3, therefore granting more precise humidifying and less water spillage. After the humidifier, a droplet eliminator is provided to remove the remaining water droplets from the air.

| HC | Heating coilThe heating coil is the module responsible for heating up the air. It’s a combination of copper tubes and aluminum fins for maximum heat transfer efficiency. Inside the copper tubes flows hot water, heating up the tubes and the aluminum fins. When cool air passes through the coil, heat gets transferred from the tubes and fins to the air.

| CC | Cooling coilThe cooling coil is used for two purposes, cooling the air and dehumidifying the air. It’s a combination of copper tubes and aluminum fins for maximum heat transfer efficiency. Inside the copper tubes flows chilled water, cooling down the tubes and the aluminum fins. When warm air passes through the coil, heat gets transferred from the air to the tubes and fins and eventually to the water. After the cooling coil, a droplet eliminator is provided to extract the remaining droplets from the air.

Control equipment

The supply of cold water is regulated through a 3-way valve close to the coil and a pump close to the cold water tank. With this equipment we create a diverting circuit, supplying a variable volumetric flow at a constant temperature. The advantage of using diverting cooling circuits is that only one pump or pump group is needed to supply all the cooling circuits. This results in less energy consumption, less maintenance and a lower investment cost compared to a separate circulation pump for every cooling coil.

Control equipment

The supply of hot water is regulated through a 3-way valve and a small circulation pump. With this equipment we create a mixing circuit, supplying a constant volumetric flow at a variable temperature.

A temperature sensor (T), pressure sensor (P) and humidity sensor (H) are installed to assure the correct conditioning of the air. The position of the sensors, controlling the valves of the coils and the frequency drive of the fan, depends on the concept. In the Easy-VAC concept, as shown below, the sensors are positioned in the beginning of the air duct, just outside the AHU. In the Eco-VAC concept the sensors are positioned in the air tunnels or the rooms where the AHU supplies the air.

The humidifier is separated in 1/3 and 2/3, this way we can humidify in steps of 1/3. Both parts are supplied with tap water through separate magnetic valves.
