Titan Air, Inc. began production in 1982, building air make-up equipment for the spray booth industry. After good success in this market, future plans where drawn up. In 1987 Titan Air diversified it’s product line and entered into the HVAC market. This has proved to be a very good decision. While the finishing industry is still a large segment of Titan Air’s business, the HVAC industry has become the greatest contributor to the company’s growth. Titan Air further diversified its product offerings in 1998 with the manufacturing and marketing of pneumatic personnel lifts for use in hazardous environments such as spray booths.

Over the years, Titan Air has specialized in designing and constructing custom air handling equipment. There have been very few projects that Titan Air hasn’t been willing to tackle. Many special project requests are repeat business for similar special equipment built by Titan Air.

Titan Air has been an industry leader in obtaining ETL approvals. It was the first manufacturer to have 2 speed applications (both 100% air make-up and AR/80) and units utilizing a variable frequency drive to vary the air volume output, tested and approved.

In 1999 Titan Air’s product line was tested by ETL according to the new ANSI Z83.4 / CSA 3.9 M99 standard for non recirculating units. Titan Air was the first in the industry to gain ETL approval to this new standard. Also, Titan Air is now recognized as an approved UL508A panel shop which enables us to offer customers an ETL label on specialized remote control panels.

Titan Air also received approval from ETL to label air handlers, evaporative coolers and air handlers utilizing steam, hot water, chilled water, DX and electric coils. We believe we are the first in our industry to offer this also.

Titan Air is located on 6 acres in Osseo Wisconsin and has approximately 70,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 4,000 square feet of office space, plus two additional storage buildings.

Titan Air pledges to continue product improvements and offerings through the use of customer input and new technologies that become available. As a valued customer, we realize that you have come to expect nothing less.

EQUIPMENT SELECTION

Whether selecting direct fired air make-up or industrial heating equipment, for quoting or application, the required information will be the same.

1. Air Volume (CFM) - Each Titan unit is custom designed and manufactured to meet therequirement of a particular application. There are points where several models overlap in air volume capacities. The difference being a larger blower moving the same air volume will typically require less horse power and be somewhat quieter than the smaller blower. At the same time the unit with a larger blower will be more expensive, unless it overlaps with a smaller twin blower unit.

2. External Static Pressure (ESP) - ESP is the static pressure developed by field supplied andinstalled components to the system (ductwork, coils, etc.). The stated ESP on a quote request or equipment order plays a role in determining the motor horsepower required to deliver the required air volume. It is important for the ESP on quote requests and orders to be as accurate as possible. Titan’s Direct Fired equipment will have two fixed point air flow sensing devices to monitor the air movement across the burner. These air flow safeties are designed to shut the burner down if the air flow is above or below the fixed set points. An overstated ESP will cause a high air flow and high pressure drop across the burner. An understated ESP will cause low air flow and low pressure drop across the burner. Either condition can cause the burner circuit to drop out.

3. System Electrical Supply (Volts/Phase/Hertz) - The nominal voltages Titan works with are:120/1/60, 208/1/60, 230/1/60, 208/3/60, 230/3/60, 460/3/60. It is important to research this and pass on the correct information as to system electrical supply. Field changing components to accommodate a different system supply than what was ordered can get expensive.

4. System Gas Supply Pressure - Titan’s gas valve train charts, and pricing, are set up in a fourtier configuration with 7”wc, 14” wc, 1psi or 2psi minimum supply, 2# max. gas pressures at each tier. The lower the stated supply gas pressure is, the larger the gas valve train becomes at any given BTU level. The worst situation here would be stating there is 2 psi supply pressure and only having 7” wc supply on the job. The selected components would not have the flow capacity, at the lower pressure, to support required BTU out put of the burner.

5. Type of Gas - The two types of fuel gases typically used in Direct Fired applications areNatural Gas and LP gas.

6. Agency Requirement (ANSI, IRI or FM) - ANSI is the Standards Agency to which Titanequipment is designed and manufactured. IRI and FM are insurance underwriters that may be involved in insuring a particular building. Each one of the two, IRI & FM, have their own requirements for gas valve trains. It is important to check for the need of either FM or IRI before asking for quotes or issuing purchase orders for equipment.

7. Unit Configuration - For each model there are a number of configurations, including but notlimited to: Horizontal intake w/ horizontal discharge, horizontal intake w/ down discharge, horizontal intake w/ vertical discharge, vertical intake w/ horizontal discharge, vertical intake w/ vertical discharge, etc.

8. Right or Left hand control - All equipment can be ordered with either right or left hand control. This is determined by which way the air moves through the unit. If you where facing the control vestibule and the air is discharging from the unit to your right, it would be a right hand unit.

9. Temperature Rise - Temperature rise is determined by two factors, first, design outdoortemperature and second, desired delivered temperature. The difference between the two will be the temperature rise of the unit. Direct fired burners are purchased in sections and put together at Titan’s factory to supply each unit with the BTU’s required to achieve stated temperature rise. In most cases an individual unit will not have the burner capacity to increase the temperature rise after the fact.

10. Temperature Control Scheme - The suggested temperature control scheme for an Air Make-Up system would be a discharge temperature control. There are two versions of Direct Fired Recirculating heaters (AR80 & AR/75), each having their own requirements for temperature control systems. The AR/80 will be controlled by a Direct Digital Control (DDC) system while the AR/75 can be controlled by a more standard room control scheme. See control section of this catalog for specifics.

11. Accessories - There are a number of factory built accessories available with each model.Intake hoods, intake filters, intake or discharge dampers, discharge diffusers, etc. These accessories are contributors to the total static pressure the fan must work against. Knowing what accessories are to be included at the outset will make a smoother selection process.

A I R I N C O R P O R A T E DCONTROLLED BUILDING PRESSURIZATION

1-9

The term "Sick Building" came into being in the late 70's and early 80's when the energy conservation movement was at its peak. Today, more than ever, the term "Sick Building" has a real meaning. The concern today expands beyond the conservation of energy and into the areas of health and general welfare of the building occupants. The concern has also branched out from office type structures to buildings housing commercial / industrial processes and manufacturing. A "Sick Building" can result from several scenarios including: 1) No ventilation at all.2) A lot of exhaust with no incoming air to make up what has been exhausted.3) Buildings with a high infiltration rate.

The major contributor to the "Sick Building" syndrome is negative building pressure (having more airbeing taken out of the building than what is coming in ). Some of the results of a negative building pressure at varying degrees are as follows :

The building boom of the 50's and 60's saw many buildings built with exhaust systems installed, but without air make up systems. It was believed that it cost too much to operate an air make-up unit, for the benefits returned. The misconception that air make up is expensive to operate may come from persons who purchased units without the benefit of some type of pressure control to vary the amount of incoming air. It will actually cost less to operate a pressure controlled air make up system than it costs to heat the infiltrated air caused by a negative pressure.

EXAMPLE : A building in Minneapolis, MN. operates under a negative pressure of - 0.1'' wc (0.1'' wc pressure is equal to 760 fpm) for 16 hours / day - 5 days / week. Assumed crackage is 50 sq. ft. . The average winter temperature is 29.3 degrees. The average length of winter is 31 weeks. The indoor temperature is kept at 60 degrees.BTU'S TO HEAT INFILTRATED AIR = ((50 SQ FT X 760 FPM) X (60 - 29.3)) X (1.1 ) = 1,283,260 BTU / HR

If this building were under a positive pressure of .03 '' wc ( .03 '' wc is equal to 415 fpm ). With the discharge of the unit controlled at 70 degrees. The btu's to heat exfiltrated air from a controlled source of incoming air will be less than heating the infiltrated air caused from the negative pressure.BTU'S TO HEAT EXFILTRATED AIR = (( 50 SQ FT X 415 FPM ) X (70 - 29.3 )) X (1.1 ) = 928,978 BTU / HR

The difference between the two btu levels is the quantity of btu's saved by controlling the pressure within the building. YEARLY BTU'S SAVED = (1,283,260 BTU/HR - 928,978 BTU/HR) X (2,480 HRS/YR) = 878,619,360 BTU/YR

BUILDING PRESSURIZATION

ADVERSE CONDITION THAT MAY RESULTWorker draft complaints - High velocity draftsthrough doors and windows.Natural draft stacks ineffective - Ventilation through roofexhaust vents and stacks greatly reduced.Carbon monoxide - Back drafting will take place in indirect combustion equipment not provided with an induced draft fan.General mechanical ventilation reduced - Air flow reduced in propeller type fans and low pressure supply and exhaustsystems.Doors difficult to open - serious injury may result fromnon checked slamming doors.Local exhaust impaired - centrifugal fans in fume hoods, etc. have reduced or nonexistent air flow.

Another building factor that comes into play without proper ventilation is the stratification of air and ultimately heat. This is easy to detect during the winter months as the temperature at the upper one third of a building, which does not benefit from controlled pressurization, can be much warmer than the lower portions. If the thermostats in a building were kept at 60 degrees and the temperature at the roof line were to go as high as 80 degrees the actual heat loss of the roof would be one third more than what the building was designed for. EXAMPLE : The building in Minneapolis, MN has a roof area of 10,000 sq. feet and an insulation R-value of 12. The heat losses would be as follows - DESIGN - (( 10,000 SQ FT ) X ( 60 - 29.3 )) X ( 1 / 12 ) = 25,583 BTU/HR ACTUAL - (( 10,000 SQ FT ) X ( 80 - 29.3 )) X ( 1 / 12 ) = 42,250 BTU/HR Again here, the yearly difference can be seen by multiplying the hourly difference by the total yearly hours. (( 42,250 btu/hr - 25,583 btu/hr ) X ( 2,480 HRS/YR )) = 41,334,160 BTU / YR

In todays commercial / industrial environment the consumer will be searching for systems that will create a safe working environment as well as control the cost of operation. Pressurization of the building will help satisfy both of these needs. Today, there are several methods that will control the pressure in a building : 1. A system that incorporates fresh air / return air dampers operated from a differential pressure control. As the pressure in the building decreases, the fresh air dampers will open bringing in more outside air. As the pressure increases, the fresh air dampers will close allowing the majority of the total volume moved by the equipment to be recirculated through the system. 2. A variable volume air make up system will vary the amount of incoming air to the building as the pressure increases and decreases. Of the two methods of varying the air volume (modulating discharge damper and variable frequency drive) the variable frequency drive will be the more cost effective in the long run. (figure 1, is a comparison of variable frequency drive and discharge damper operating parameters)

Besides the term "SICK BUILDING" , there is another term that has surfaced in the last couple of years. The term "DEMAND SIDE MANAGEMENT" relates to the energy conservation side of the industry. By incorporating a pressure control into an air make up or industrial heaters circuitry, modulating the volume of fresh air that is allowed into the building, the system becomes an on demand air make up unit, supplying only the fresh air needed to maintain a positive pressure inside the building.

would have a pressure drop of 0.264" wc vs. 0.185" wc per above chart (0.185" wc -:- 0.70 = 0.264" wc).EXAMPLE: A discharge damper on a TA-112 @ 5,000 CFM, either built in or attached directly to blower outlet,

At 22,000 CFM, 0.135" would be added to external static rather than 0.252" that is tabulated for 30,000 CFM.

Filters

Above accessory pressure drops are listed at maximum CFM for model number. At lower CFM, use the formula:((desired CFM -:- max model CFM)2 x listed static drop for model accessory) = static drop at lower CFM level.

EXAMPLE: What would the pressure drop of 1" cleanable filters be at 22,000 CFM for a TA-130?((22,000 CFM -:- 30,000 CFM)2 x 0.252" wc) = 0.135" wc

Titan Direct Fired Air Make - Up Heating SystemsTitan’s Air Make - Up Systems are designed to replace the air exhausted from commercial or industrial buildings - and condition the new, fresh air to improve indoor air quality and ventilation.

Air Make - Up Systems by Titan incorporate the advanced components necessary for energy efficient, long term indoor air quality. The direct - fired burner offers 100% thermal efficiency - as opposed to 80% (nominal) efficiency for an indirect fired air make - up heater. The turndown ratio for direct - fired units is much greater than common indirect - fired units. This means better control of discharge air temperatures - and better use of fuel energy to heat the air as it moves across the burner.

The H.O.T. (High - Outlet - Temperature) system combines two systems into one. First, the H.O.T. system works as a standard air make-up heater which provides the air needed to make-up what is being exhausted by the spray booth. Secondly, on low speed, the H.O.T. System provides fresh, hot air in low volume at low velocity - ideal for curing finish coats.Elevated bake temperatures can be achieved with either a low speed bake cycle or recirculation of booth air in bake cycle.Titan Air was the first in the industry to offer an ETL listed, direct fired, 2 speed air make-up system with 160° temperature rise capabilities in bake mode.

DESIGNED WITH THE FINISHING PROFESSIONAL IN MIND.

FEATURES:• CFM ranges: 2,400 - 120,000• Indoor or outdoor construction• Available in a variety of configurations

AIR RECIRCULATION SYSTEMS A I R I N C O R P O R A T E D

Titan Air offers two versions of recirculating direct fired heaters to target specific applications. AR/80™ and AR/75™ models differ in the minimum percentage of outside air (OA) they can supply to a building. Determining which version of recirculating direct fired heater to utilize depends upon outside air requirements. AR/80™ units are intended for applications where the equipment will operate at minimum OA percentage quite often. Operational cost savings of operating at a lower minimum OA percentage will quickly offset higher initial cost of more sophisticated temperature controls. AR/75™ units are intended for applications where requirements for a high OA percentage exist most of the time. Customers benefit from the up-front dollar savings associated with the simpler temperature controls of AR/75™ units. Buildings where space temperature will be controlled below 60°F should utilize a specific temperature controller with AR/75™ units. Refer to controls section for a description of the different approaches utilized in AR/80™ and AR/75™ equipment to prevent build-up of effluents as required by ANSI Z83.18 – 2000. Typical Applications: Warehouses Auditoriums Factories Foundries Garages Natatoriums Etc…….. CFM Ranges: AR/80™ & AR/75™ – 2,400 to 120,000 CFM. Under 4,000 CFM, minimum OA volume is 800 CFM. Min. OA volume increases at altitude. Maximum Available Temperature Rise: 110°F for Natural Gas. 90°F for LP Gas. Minimum Ventilation Rate: AR/80™ - 20% of total unit air volume. AR/75™ - 25% of total unit air volume. Maximum Return Air Percentage: AR/80™ - 80% of total unit air volume. AR/75™ - 75% of total unit air volume.

Titan Air’s direct fired recirculating heaters provide the following benefits:

• Even heat distribution. • Ventilation control. • Constant minimum OA percentage as

OA & RA static pressures vary. • Continuous flushing of airborne

contaminants. • Reduces cold air infiltration (with

building pressure control). • Recirculation of heated building air

when operating at reduced OA percentage. This is an energy savings feature.

Titan Air AR/80™ and AR/75™ equipment is listed by ETL for compliance with ANSI Z83.18-2000 Standard for Recirculating Direct Gas-Fired Heaters. AR/80™ or AR/75™ equipment can vary the volume of outdoor air supply to match exhaust loads and offer a minimum outdoor air mode for efficient space heating. Mechanical exhaust or building relief must always be provided for the minimum outdoor air volume. Titan Air direct fired recirculating equipment provides safe, economical, and flexible heating and ventilation in summer and winter. Proper application provides an effective means of saving energy while improving indoor air quality.

AIR RECIRCULATION SYSTEMS A I R I N C O R P O R A T E D

ANSI Z 83.18-2000 is a revision of ANSI Z 83.18-1990 covering direct fired recirculating heaters only. Non-recirculating heaters are covered under ANSI Z 83.4/ CSA 3.7-1999 which has also been revised. This revised standard for recirculating direct fired heaters took effect January 1, 2003. This standard has dramatic changes in requirements resulting in equipment and control redesign to certify equipment.

PROVED VENTILATION RATE Under previous versions of direct fired recirculating heater standards, there were no requirements to prove minimum ventilation rate. The new standard requires minimum ventilation rate be maintained at or above minimum certified percentage of outside air (OA) or the burner must be shut down. Titan Air certified AR/80™ equipment to maintain a minimum ventilation rate of 20% of total unit air volume and designed an OA/RA damper/control combination that maintains 20% minimum OA. The same OA/RA damper/control design is utilized on AR/75™ equipment to maintain 25% minimum OA.

EFFLUENT BUILD UP IN SERVED AREA (Attributed to Direct Fired heater) Direct fired equipment inherently carries the products of combustion into the served area. The intention of this standard is to limit the build up of effluents (as a time weighted average, TWA) to the following predetermined levels.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) = 5,000 PPM Carbon Monoxide (CO) = 25 PPM Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) = 3 PPM

Research conducted by the Gas Research Institute (GRI) proved that build-up of effluents from a recirculating direct fired heater with a controlled discharge temperature (explained further in next segment) will not exceed these levels in a building with equal relief (mechanical or natural) to the OA volume introduced. These limits are well within OSHA and ACGIH guidelines.

CONTROLLED DISCHARGE AIR TEMPERATURE CO2 is a predictable value as applied to combustion. For every 1000 BTU worth of gas burned, under design air/fuel mixture, there is a given quantity of CO2 (in PPM) produced. Using CO2 maximum values as a base line, combined with the variables of OA temperature, RA temperature and percent ventilation, the maximum equivalent temperature rise and maximum allowable discharge temperature can be calculated.

------------------------------------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE: An AR/80 unit with OA/RA dampers in minimum OA position, OA temperature at 10°F, RA temperature at 62°F.

Temp Rise (equivalent) = ((5000 x (20/100)) -:- (19.63 x 1.04)) Where:

5000 = Maximum PPM CO2 in served area 20/100 = Percent ventilation expressed as a fraction 19.63 = Constant 1.04 = Amount of CO2 formed by combustion of 1000 BTU Nat Gas based on dry standard

conditions. Factor for LP gas is 1.206

Temperature Rise Equivalent = 48.98°F

Knowing the maximum equivalent temperature rise, OA temperature, RA temperature and the percentage of ventilation, the maximum allowable discharge temperature can be calculated.

Max Allowable Disch. Temp.= [(20%OA x (10° + 48.98°)) + (80%RA x (62° + 48.98°))] -:- (20%OA + 80%RA)

Maximum allowable discharge temperature = 100.58°F -------------------------------------------------------------------------

These algorithms are programmed into AR/80™ controllers so as variables (OA temperature, RA temperature and percentage ventilation) change, during the course of operation, the maximum allowable discharge temperature will be recalculated and adjusted accordingly. AR/80™ equipment will feature more sophisticated controllers to continuously calculate maximum allowable discharge temperature. Titan Air also offers AR/75™ equipment with simpler temperature controls that will always assume minimum ventilation rate thereby eliminating OA damper position feedback. Refer to controls section of catalog for comparisons of AR/80™ and AR/75™ control options.

DIMENSIONS & HP CHARTSDEMAND-AIR ™units are the same size as Air Make-Up units and are available in the same configurations. Refer to the Air Make-Up section for dimensional data and blower motor horsepower charts.

TITAN AIR has emerged as an industry leader in both innovation and design. In 1988 TITAN AIR was the first to have 2 speed air make-up and 2 speed air recirculating units tested and approved by ETL Testing Laboratories. Now, we have designed the DEMAND-AIR system which incorporates the traditional efficiency of direct fired equipment with the superior* energy savings of a variable frequency drive, the first ETL listed in the industry. Because some customers have an ever changing air make-up demand, we have developed an extremely flexible system to cover both high and low CFM requirements. * Variable frequency drives are significantly more efficient than inlet vane or discharge damper VAV systems.

4-3

TITAN's DEMAND-AIR system meets the demand by using building pressure as a sensing point to signal the frequency drive to change blower speed. By supplying only the make-up air needed, TITAN's DEMAND-AIR system can help you realize operational savings in two ways. First, gas consumption will be reduced each time the blower(s) slow down (gas needed to maintain a discharge temperature will drop in direct proportion to the air flow). Second, horsepower and electrical power needed to move the required air will drop exponentially as the air flow is reduced. Also many utilities offer rebates on the installation of variable speed drives which means additional savings.

THE HIGH QUALITY OF TITAN'S PRODUCTS ARE SECOND TO NONE. High quality along with the high efficiency of the new DEMAND-AIR system, gives you a long lasting money saving system that simply can't be beat!

Titan Indoor Pool Area Comfort SystemSuccessful pools offer pool side comfort in which those not in the water can relax and socialize. The Titan Pool Area Heating / Ventilating System comes designed for high efficiency in cold climates. For required ventilation, the Titan system introduces tempered outside air to replace exhausted, corrosive, humid air within the pool enclosure. In winter, the amount of fresh air being supplied is dictated by the level of relative humidity in the pool area. Typically, as the system settles out, less fresh air is needed to control the humidity level. Desirable lower gas consumption is the result. Titan’s direct fired burner offers maximum thermal efficiency. This indoor pool area comfort system is another example of Titan Air engineering working to serve you better.

American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRE) Design Guidelines.1. “Natatoriums are characterized by high latent loads that should be controlled to minimize corrosion and condensation on the building structure. Outdoor air of low moisture content may be used for this purpose.” “Ventilation of the pool enclosure helps control corrosion and condensation.”

In the winter months the outside air is typically very dry. Titan’s AR/80, along with a control scheme specifically designed for the swimming pool environment, takes advantage of this dry outside air to purge the pool area of the unwanted corrosive moisture. Titan’s AR/80 has the capability of modulating the handled air from a high of 100% outside air to a low of 20% outside air. Air not taken from the outside is recirculated, through the heater (after the burner), from the pool area.

As tempered dry air is introduced to the pool area, an equal amount of humid air will be exhausted. As the humidity level rises (increased activity) more fresh air is introduced and in turn more humid air is exhausted.

SWIMMING POOL AREA EQUIPMENT

2. “The pool area should be isolated from the adjacent building areas, if possible, bycreating a negative pressure in the pool area.”

Part of Titan’s control scheme, designed for swimming pool applications, includes a Variable Frequency Drive to change the speed of the exhaust fan. A pressure differential sensor is employed to determine the pressure differential between the pool area and lobby area (in the case of a motel). The signal from the pressure differential sensor will dictate the speed at which the exhaust fan operates. The controller set point is at a negative. Any time the sensor indicates the pressure is approaching neutral, the speed of the exhaust fan will increase holding the pool area in a negative as compared to the rest of the building.

3. “All components of the pool heating, air handling and air distribution systems thatare exposed directly or indirectly to the moist, corrosive pool atmosphere should be protected from the corrosiveness”.

Proper design of the equipment will include a phenolic coated interior. Heresite, Titan’s phenolic coating of choice, is resistant to chlorine or bromine laden air common in a swimming pool application.

ADDITIONAL FACTORS AFFECTING EQUIPMENT PERFORMANCEDelivering tempered dry air (from Titan’s unit) to a pool enclosure is only part

of a good pool de-humidification and ventilation system. Proper air distribution is essential to prevent condensation on windows and other building components. Air distribution also plays a large role in the volume of water evaporated from a pool surface. Along with air distribution, the control scheme (temperature, humidity and pressure) must be wired, set up and operated properly. Vapor barriers on interior surfaces of pool areas play an important role in keeping moist corrosive air from damaging insulation and other building materials.Titan strongly recommends installing pool heating / ventilation equipment in a mechanical room adjacent to the pool area. Outdoor mounted equipment SHOULD NOT be placed directly over the pool. Additional installation and operational restrictions will apply to outdoor mounted equipment.

DUCT WORK AND REGISTERSDuct and registers must be designed, and placed, to deliver an adequate air

volume and velocity to the entire surface area of each window. If the inner surface temperature of a window drops below room air dew point temperature, condensation will occur (see chart 1). The aesthetic appeal of numerous windows (especially those high on the side wall and near a spa or hot tub) should be weighed against the required increased air volume and duct work to prevent condensation. Per ASHRAE’S guidelines, “the use of glass on pool exposures complicates the design problem and adds cost, especially in colder climates. Cold drafts and condensation are difficult and expensive to eliminate if glass walls or exposures are used”.

Air velocity over water surface(s) must be kept at a minimum to reduce water evaporation. Supply air should be directed up or down along perimeter windows and / or walls. Return air and exhaust inlets should be located as high as possible to minimize air velocity over the water surface. The higher the rate of evaporation, the higher the humidity level. A higher humidity level will require a higher volume of outside air to dissipate the humidity creating higher gas consumption to heat the extra volume of outside air.

An outdoor air intake, either hood or louver, should be sized and located to prevent snow and rain from being drawn in. The mechanical room must be large enough to facilitate proper installation and service of the unit, and proper configuration of supply, return and exhaust duct work, filters etc.

CONTROLS, START - UP AND MAINTENANCEThere are three parameters to the control scheme for this type of application.

Humidity, temperature and pressure controls must be properly designed and integrated to ensure all three are optimized efficiently. Titan has selected sensors not affected by the corrosive atmosphere associated with this application. The controllers, for sensors in pool area, will be located in the mechanical room with sensors being wired to them. If mechanical room door is located in the pool area, it should have a good seal to prevent air in pool area from migrating into the mechanical room.

Factory checkout cannot duplicate conditions the equipment will see when installed. A thorough check out of the system must be performed at job site. In addition to job site start - up, detailed operator training should be given to building staff. On a yearly basis, a qualified technician should perform a complete start - up procedure to ensure all sensors and controls are functioning properly and all safety controls are operational.

DESIGN CRITERIAThe swimming pool environment can be one of the more difficult

environments to control. When designing a pool area there are several factors that must be taken into account while selecting equipment to heat and ventilate the area.

1) People Comfort - both in and out of pool.

2) Air Movement - air movement at outside perimeters and air velocity across the water surface.

3) Humidity Level - keep humidity in a zone that will provide comfort and building protection.

4) Negative Pressure - pool area should be kept at a negative pressure as compared to rest of facility to avoid destructive, chlorine laden air from migrating out of the pool area.

Chlorine laden moisture, if left to condensate, can and will have devastating effects on most building materials. Studies have proven the optimum relative humidity level for human comfort is 50% to 60%.

Evaporation of water, in a pool area, is the source for high levels of humidity. Of the methods of controlling humidity in a swimming pool environment, dry fresh air is the most effective method. The introduction of fresh air and exhausting of an equal volume of pool air will purge the area of moisture, thus lowering the relative humidity level.

A I R I N C O R P O R A T E DEVAPORATIVE COOLING - GENERAL INFO.

6-1

EVAPORATIVE COOLING EFFECTIVENESS: The performance of an evaporative cooler is based on the ratio of the number of degrees it can cool the air compared to the WET BULB DEPRESSION. This rating is the "evaporative EFFECTIVENESS" or (evaporative EFFICIENCY) of the cooler. The number of degrees the DRY BULB TEMPERATURE (DBT) of the air can be lowered is a percentage of the WET BULB DEPRESSION of (DBT - WBT) x EVAPORATIVE EFFECTIVENESS.

At design conditions the evaporation rate to reduce the dry bulb temp. from 102° to 75° will be 59 gph. To keep the reservoir water fresh, it is necessary to bleed some water off at all times. Depending on the water conditions, the bleed off rate can be equal to the evaporation rate. The total make-up water rate can be as high as 118 gph with this example.

6-3

A MORE COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT WITH EVAPORATIVE COOLING Titan Air evaporative coolers feature high quality rigid cellulose media or flame retardant fiberglass media. The temperature shown on an ordinary thermometer is called the dry bulb temperature. The cooling effect of evaporative pads is measured by the wet bulb temperature, which is a function of the relative humidity. Figure 1 illustrates the relationship between the wet bulb temperature and the dry bulb temperature. The wet bulb temperature is directly related to the relative humidity. The drier the air, the faster the water evaporates and the cooler the sock becomes. An evaporative cooler works the same way. It cools the air to a temperature close to the wet bulb temperature. In the continental United States, the average wet bulb temperature during the summer ranges between 70°F and 80°F. Evaporative cooling media pads can cool air within 2° or 3° of the wet bulb temperature. With proper maintenance, they can operate for years at high air volumes without loss of cooling efficiency or water carryover. In practical terms, this clearly means a more comfortable environment. To permit optimum design of contact material for each application, the media pads are manufactured in a variety of flute heights and pad depths. Alternative media types, originally designed as air filters, are not practical for central HVAC systems. The research and development by Munters has changed the way HVAC Engineers and Architects utilize evaporative cooling. Rigid media equipped systems do not require long air travel. There are no high pressure nozzles to maintain. Nor do they require yearly pad changes. Performance is predictable and consistent year after year. Rigid media systems are not restricted by size. The nominal face velocity of TITAN's evaporative cooling models is 500 FPM, giving each model an average evaporative cooling efficiency of 89%. This means that the discharge temperature of TITAN's evaporative coolers will be 89% of the difference between the entering dry bulb temperature and the entering wet bulb temperature. See figure 2. Even in the most humid areas, the temperature of supply air can be reduced, creating a cooler more comfortable work environment especially in kitchens, laundries and dry cleaning facilities.

A I R I N C O R P O R A T E DSTANDARD TEMPERATURE CONTROLS

Titan Air offers control systems designed to optimize performance of our various direct-fired equipment configurations. These systems vary from simple temperature control for a constant volume air make-up unit to “network-ready” DDC controllers for more adaptable equipment such as variable air volume or recirculating units. Furthermore, all control systems can be customized for an application.

The controls catalog section is divided into 4 segments. 1. STANDARD TEMPERATURE CONTROLS2. STANDARD AIRFLOW CONTROLS3. SELECTED APPLICATION-SPECIFIC CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS4. STANDARD TEMP. CONTROLS BASED ON UNIT TYPE & AIRFLOW CONTROLS

Discharge Air Temperature Controls: Tempering make-up air is typically accomplished with a modulating discharge air temperature controller. Gas flow to the burner is modulated to achieve the selected discharge air temperature setpoint. Discharge air temperature controls are typically utilized on units designed to replace exhausted air with tempered outside air. These units can be either constant volume, two speed, or variable air volume. A discharge air temperature sensor that varies its resistance based on airstream temperature is typically utilized. Refer to table at the end of this section for standard controllers available.

Room Override Thermostat w/ Discharge Air Temperature Controls: Operation is similar to discharge air temperature control (above) with a room temperature thermostat added. If room temperature falls

below the setpoint of the room thermostat, the discharge air temperature controller setpoint is automatically increased. Refer to table in this section for standard controllers available. Room Temperature Controls: Room temperature control of a direct-fired unit is a “cascade control” system where discharge temperature is automatically adjusted between a minimum and maximum value based on room temperature. As room temperature decreases below its setpoint, the discharge temperature setpoint is automatically increased by the controller. The opposite applies as the room temperature increases. A small change in room temperature produces a large change in the discharge temperature setpoint. Minimum and maximum discharge temperature setpoints minimize stratification from floor to ceiling. Room temperature controls are typically utilized for industrial heating and ventilating applications on AR/80™ or AR/75™ units featuring air recirculation capability. Refer to table at the end of this section for standard controllers available.

A I R I N C O R P O R A T E DSTANDARD AIR FLOW CONTROLS

DEMAND-AIR™ Variable Air Volume: DEMAND-AIR™ units are capable of varying outside air volume between a unit’s rated CFM and 30% of rated CFM. A variable frequency drive (VFD) varies supply fan speed. Fan speed is typically controlled based on building relative pressure. In a building with variable exhaust volumes, relative pressure in the building will drop as additional exhaust fans start. VFD output frequency increases to bring building relative pressure back up to an adjustable setpoint. Most applications utilize positive pressure setpoints to realize the benefits of controlled building pressurization. Titan Air introduced the first ETL listed variable air volume direct-fired make-up air units. Through continuous product improvement practices, DEMAND-AIR™ units remain the benchmark of direct-fired VAV systems. AR/80™ or AR/75™ Outside Air (OA)/Return Air Percentage (RA) Control: Titan Air offers direct-fired recirculating industrial heating and ventilating units certified to recently revised ANSI Standard Z83.18. Two versions of these units are available with either 80% maximum recirculated air (AR/80™) or 75% maximum recirculated air (AR/75™). Typical OA/RA percentage control applications involve:

1. Building pressure control, 2. Two position control, 3. Manual rotary dial control, 4. Humidity control.

Titan Air employs a unique control scheme that modulates recirculated air volume based on outside air pressure drop across the burner profile. This keeps minimum OA percentage at

rated value when field installed ductwork and filter conditions vary from design conditions. Maintaining rated minimum OA percentage maximizes operational cost savings and improves indoor air quality.

Occupied and unoccupied operation modes are often added to AR systems. A time clock sets occupied/unoccupied periods. In the occupied mode, the blower operates continuously with space temperature controlled by modulating supply air temperature. In the unoccupied mode, the unit is typically off and only cycles on if space temperature falls below a separate unoccupied temperature setpoint. OA volume is forced to minimum in the unoccupied mode.

ANSI Z83.18 requires control practices that prevent build-up of space effluent levels. AR/80™ systems accomplish this by limiting maximum gas flow as the OA percentage decreases towards a minimum of 20%. AR/80™ systems perform well in all applications where recirculation of room air is practical and should always be selected for facilities with periods when minimum OA is required. AR/75™ units are intended for applications with ventilation requirements that will almost always force higher OA percentages. AR/75™ units on facilities where space temperature will occasionally be controlled at less than 59°F need a temperature controller that does not force a higher OA percentage due to low space temperature.

SPECIFIC CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS

Titan Air provides value-added modifications to standard control packages by incorporating custom control components in a factory packaged and tested assembly to meet virtually any control sequence. Examples of control systems customized for an application are presented below.

Enclosed Parking Garage Ventilation: A packaged control system for enclosed parking garage ventilation is available. In addition to standard discharge air temperature control of a constant volume AMU, the following optional components are typically included:

1. Space CO detectors to start the AMU ifspace CO concentration rises.

2. Inlet ductstat automatically enablesburner operation based on OA temp. (delete Summer-Off-Winter switch).

3. Timer or mechanical “pin-type” time clockto operate unit for 15 minutes per hour.

Some parking garage applications utilize two speed or variable air volume units so that exhaust zones can be controlled independently. Local code requirements may vary.

Demand-Air™ w/ Multiple Exhaust Fan Interlock Speed Control: Facilities that do not lend themselves well to controlled building pressurization can benefit from automatic control of supply volume with this modified control system. Installation technicians enter the exhaust volume percentage for each exhaust fan on a password protected digital interface screen. The programmable controller calculates current total exhaust volume by adding entered percentages for each operating exhaust fan (as determined from dry contact closures). Supply VFD speed is set to match total exhaust volume. Up to five exhaust fans can be interlocked with the standard programmable controller. Interlocking supply VFD speed with more than five exhaust volumes requires expanded controller input capacity.

Space Relative Humidity Control for Metal Storage Facilities: Relative humidity levels in metal storage facilities must be kept down to limit corrosion. A space humidistat can be added to an AR/80™ unit to enable burner operation and override discharge temperature setpoint when humidity rises.

Waste Water Treatment Plants: Corrosive and potentially hazardous areas within waste water treatment plants are often served by outdoor mounted air make-up units with explosion proof thermostats providing unoccupied start and room temperature override functions. A lighting circuit interlock establishes occupied mode operation. Low leak discharge dampers with coated non-ferrous blades provide a quality seal between the unit cabinet and corrosive building air. Supply fan can be started prior to opening the discharge damper. Airflow switches and pre-purge in unit ensure safe ignition.

Indoor Swimming Pool Enclosure Ventilation: AR/80™ Industrial Heating and Ventilating units customized for indoor swimming pool enclosure ventilation in northern climates is a common application. See separate catalog section.

Supply Air Relative Humidity or Dewpoint Control for Process Applications: Industrial finishing operations and laboratory environments are common applications for equipment capable of controlling supply air temperature and moisture content. Heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification components are selected based upon local weather extremes and custom controls are utilized to condition outside air to specified supply air conditions.

Paint Booth Spray/Bake System: Non-recirculating two speed or recirculating single speed H.O.T. ™ units are available with packaged controls to provide: 1. Booth pressure control via exhaust VFD2. Purge/bake/cool timers & temp. setpoints3. Lighting contactor4. Compressed air solenoid enable logic5. Enhanced diagnostics to minimize downtime.See separate catalog section on H.O.T.™ units.
