McLaren Vale

McLaren ValeHead south to sample SA’s finest shiraz

Half an hour down the Fleurieu Peninsula from Adelaide is one of the nation’s great wine regions, home to legendarily dark and peppery shiraz. The secret, according to the locals, is the soil, which is rich in sea salt from the strong coastal winds. It’s not as famous as the Barossa and Clare Valley wine regions, but that just means there’s more for you to discover. McLaren Vale 5171. www.mclarenvale.info.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the work of JMW Turner has come to the Art Gallery of South Australia direct from the UK’s Tate Britain and features everything from signature masterpieces to rough sketches, some never exhibited before, spanning his first pieces as a prodigiously talented 13 year old until his death in 1851. Eagle Mountain Bike Park Bike lovers: the hills are alive!

There are over 21km of bike paths in this enormous dedicated cycling park in the Adelaide Hills, offering the cycling enthusiast every kind of two-wheeled environment possible. Beginners? There’s a skills development section especially for you. Cross country? There are downhill and bush paths aplenty. Stunts? There’s a jumps park for the getting of sweet air. Mt Barker Rd, Leawood Gardens 5150. Daily sunrise to sunset.

Lucky Lupitas Local foodies are obsessed with this Mexican diner

Despite the odd location in the suburban wasteland that is Bedford Park (near Flinders University), you’re going to have to wait. There are no reservations at Lucky Lupitas and it’s pretty much always full. That said, it’s worth lining up to get your mouth around their smoked chicken quesadillas, corn cobs with spicy mayo and especially the chipotle ribs. 1/4 Rupert Ave, Bedford Park 5042. 08 8277 4004. www.luckylupitas.com. Grace Emily HotelAdelaide’s hands-down coolest pub

Adelaide has no shortage of great pubs boasting some of the nation’s best beer gardens; this, however, is Time Out’s favourite. The Grace hosts live music seven nights a week and has defied the flat-screen sports-bar cancer that has consumed so many city hotels. It’s quirky and kitschy with amiable staff, deep couches, great music and Coopers Ales on tap. What more could you need? 232 Waymouth St, Adelaide 5000. 02 8231 5500. Daily 4pm-late.

Ying Chow The best Chinese restaurant in Adelaide

There’s nothing fancy about this Gouger Street institution with its hawker-style dining, swift turnover and easy-to-wipe-down plastic furniture, but the food is amazing and competitively priced. Their eshand clay pots are deservedly famous, but our tip is ask for the BBC (broad bean and bean curd): it’s often off-menu, but it’s amazing. Trust us. 114 Gouger St, Adelaide 5000. 08 8211 7998. Southside Tea RoomVisit the café/bar owned by an indie popstar

If you’ve ever seen a performance by the Grates then you’ll know that lead singer Patience Hodgson has an amazing stage presence. Pull up a stool in her retro-cool Morningside bar and you’ll realise that she also mixes up a mean Martini and a killer Old-Fashioned. If that isn’t enough talent for one person, she serves a great French onion dip. The bar hosts gigs and events too. 639 Wynnum Rd, Morningside 4170. southsidetearoom.com. Mon-Wed 7am-2pm; Thu, Fri 7am-2pm & 5pm-midnight; Sat 8am-midnight; Sun 8am-8pm.

Anywhere Theatre Festival It’s theatre, but not as you know it

Brisbane is the home of a unique movement dedicated to taking theatre performances out of traditional venues. Hundreds of emerging artists come together to present innovative new works in unusual public spaces, allowing audiences to encounter theatre in the course of their everyday lives. This might mean circus in an elevator, theatre on the train, or cabaret at the laundromat – it could happen anywhere, anytime. anywherefest.com. May 8-19.

Time Out tip: brisbaneIf wandering through Southbank Parklands on a hot day you can cool down with a dip at Streets Beach – an artificial public swimming beach

The snacks are as imaginative as the surrounds. 16b Logan Rd, Woolloongabba 4102. www.canvasclub.com.au. Tue-Fri 3pm-midnight; Sat, Sun 11.30am-late.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Cuddle a koala without leaving the city

Down by the river in Brisbane’s western suburbs you’ll find the largest koala sanctuary in Australia. Cuddling one of these adorable sleepy marsupials is an unforgettable experience. Hand-feed more than 100 kangaroos and wallabies in the two-acre reserve, or hold a snake or baby crocodile if you dare. With kookaburras, dingoes, wombats, platypuses, echidnas, Tasmanian devils and wild rainbow lorikeets, it’s a beautiful little piece of the outback in the city. 708 Jesmond Rd, Fig Tree Pocket 4069. www.koala.net. Quilts 1700-1945The untold history of quilting unveiled

This exhibition of quilting dispels the perception that it’s merely a handicraft. An extraordinary collection traces 200 years of the culture and history surrounding quilting. It also includes one of the world’s most significant textiles: the Rajah Quilt, sewn by convict women on board the Rajah during their journey from Great Britain to Van Diemen’s Land in 1841. Crystal Cascades Cool down with a rainforest swim

The Wet Tropics have many things going for them, not least rain. One drawback is a prevalence of dangerous, deadly miniature jellyfish known as Irukandji, which keeps everyone out of the ocean at the hottest time of the year. Thankfully, summer is also monsoon time, ensuring crystal-clear mountain spring water fills up boulder-strewn Crystal Cascades: the perfect place to cool off when humidity hits 100 per cent. Cairns Adventure Festival Push your body to the limits

This acclaimed sporting event pulls thousands of competitors to the Far North from around the world to compete in long-distance kayaking, rainforest mountain bike races and the Great Barrier Reef swim at Green Island. An action-packed week culminates with the hugely popular Cairns Ironman on Sunday June 9, where elite competitors brave crocodiles during the 3.8km swim, enjoy incredible views during a 180km return cycle to Port Douglas and then run a testing marathon 42.2km through the cane fields before a dramatic Esplanade finish. Various locations, Far North Queensland. ironmancairns.com. Jun 2-10.

Mareeba Rodeo Saddle up with FNQ’s cowboys If you think the tropics are all reef and rainforest then head up and over the Kuranda Range to Mareeba, where the soil is red and dusty and the men are supremely tough. The Far North’s rodeo season culminates here, with cattlemen coming in to participate from as far away as Normanton, 700km west on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Over two booze-filled, action-packed days, cowboys take on the biggest, scariest steers in Australia. Riotous barn dances feature each evening. Mareeba 4880. www.mareebarodeo.com.au. Jul 13-14.

Rusty’s MarketTropical fruits and coconut cocktails

Much of Australia’s tropical fruit is grown on the Atherton Tableland, so Cairns is home to the nation’s most vibrant fresh food market. Locals skip supermarkets and hit Rusty’s early before the steaming heat builds, stocking up on mangoes, passionfruit and pineapples plus organic veggies grown by Italians who have farmed up here for a century. Multicultural Rusty’s is also the best spot in town for coffee, sugar cane juice and refreshing Coconut Boy cocktails. Sheridan St, Cairns 4870. rustysmarkets.com.au. Climb aboard an early-morning Daintree River tour and you’re transported to a world ruled by 5m-long reptiles who have lived and died on this river for millennia. The saltwater estuarine crocodile is a fearsome beast viewable here at every stage of his development. You will see crocs on their nest, baby crocs perched on trees and the mightiest monsters warming up in the sun or sleeping off their latest supper. These are man-eaters, so keep your hands, head and cameras inside the boat. Bruce Belcher’s Tours, 2856 Mossman-Daintree Rd, Daintree 4873. www.daintreerivercruises.com.au. $10-$25. Cape York and the Torres Strait Head up the Tip and go island hopping

Cairns seems out of the way to most people, but it’s just the gateway to the vastness of Cape York. After five hours of driving north the bitumen gives out, and you have at least 24 hours to go along agonising unsealed roads to reach the Tip, Australia’s most northerly point. If the drive sounds a little difficult, Qantas fly every day to Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, epicentre of a vibrant 274-island nation stretching right to Papua New Guinea. Cape York 4874.

Cooktown Discovery Weekend See where modern Australia began

Captain James Cook explored Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. Shortly after discovering Botany Bay, the skipper holed his ship on the Great Barrier Reef, and for one horrible night, faced disaster. Saving Endeavour, he pulled her into the river that now bears her name, and spent six weeks patching her up and meeting the natives. Surfers Paradise

Surfers ParadiseSwim the sparkling surf of the Gold Coast’s most famous beach

Long before the high rises, meter maids and nightclubs, people came to Surfers Paradise because of the beach. White sands littered with tanned bodies stretch as far as the eye can see in both directions, and there’s nothing quite like frolicking in the surf as the waves crash over you. What’s more, Surfers is tropical enough that autumn is still excellent beach weather. The beach can be unforgiving if you’re not careful, though – always swim between the flags and wear sunscreen. Start in the CBD, where you’ll need an orienteering map to find the likes of Baxter Inn (Basement, 152-156 Clarence St) and Bulletin Place (Lvl 1, 10-14 Bulletin Pl) before hitting the Hazy Rose in Darlo (1/83 Stanley St) and Hinky Dinks in (the right side of) Kings Cross (185 Darlingurst Rd).

Hit up Zara, Topshop and Topman Shop for top labels in Pitt Street Mall

For years, Aussies have had to hit the interwebs for their fix of European high-street fashions, but that’s all changed with Zara taking a huge chunk of space at the flash Westfield CBD shopping centre and Topshop moving into the historic Gowings building. Affordable, fashion-forward and packed full of trendy young Sydney things, these are Sydney’s must-shop spots right now.
