Long before the high rises, meter maids and nightclubs, people came to Surfers Paradise because of the beach. White sands littered with tanned bodies stretch as far as the eye can see in both directions, and there’s nothing quite like frolicking in the surf as the waves crash over you. What’s more, Surfers is tropical enough that autumn is still excellent beach weather. The beach can be unforgiving if you’re not careful, though – always swim between the flags and wear sunscreen. Mount Tamborine in the Gold Coast’s hinterland is a mountain rainforest community with plenty of good dining that’s only 40 minutes drive from the Coast.

One of the key attractions of Tamborine is the eco-friendly rainforest skywalk. As you ascend through the canopy, you’ll see rainforest wildlife and gorgeous views of the Coast. Boasting coral gardens that start two metres below the surface, Mudjimba Island (aka Old Woman Island) is one of the most beautiful snorkelling spots on the Sunshine Coast. The reef’s hard and soft corals sit on a series of small gullies, drop-offs and ledges that house fish, eels and crustaceans. Pumicestone Passage flows between Bribie Island and the mainland, creating a calm, seagrass-filled haven for dolphins, turtles and sea birds. Tubby, big-nosed dugongs frequent the channel; watch them snuffle around and consider just how much loneliness/rum/scurvy you would need to mistake one of these slow grey blobs for mermaids, as sailors of yore once did. The Opera House’s winter festival is a mix of music (Vivid LIVE), light art (Vivid LIGHT) and talks (Vivid IDEAS). Last year’s highlights included epic performances from Florence + the Machine and talks from Boing Boing co-founder Cory Doctorow and Etsy’s Chad Dickerson. Party in Pacha It’s Ibiza in Sydney You’ve probably heard of Ivy, the CBD’s multi-storey ode to all things food and (especially) drink, with its eight bars and slew of restaurants. And you know Pacha, the Ibiza-born nightclub-slash-circus with select residencies in the world’s coolest clubs. Well, late last year, Pacha opened its first Australian offshoot in Sydney, so be sure to check out the world’s biggest DJs along with some eye-dazzlingly good burlesque and circus acts when the party takes over the Ivy every Saturday night. Small bar sceneCrawl through the city’s best new bars

Since 2007, when the City cut the red tape and costs around opening a bar, cool little bolt-hole bars have been popping up across town like a new breed of awesome weed. Take advantage – the cocktails at these little guys are Sydney’s finest and the atmosphere, especially late, is fist-pumpingly good. Start in the CBD, where you’ll need an orienteering map to find the likes of Baxter Inn (Basement, 152-156 Clarence St) and Bulletin Place (Lvl 1, 10-14 Bulletin Pl) before hitting the Hazy Rose in Darlo (1/83 Stanley St) and Hinky Dinks in (the right side of) Kings Cross (185 Darlingurst Rd).
