ACAH Series applies the inverter technology to the compressor and condenser fan motor for not only high loadbut also highly efficient operation in all operating areas. 2 _ Outdoor UnitIntroductionAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)1. Introduction Cooling cycleACAH Series uses the low pressure type scroll compressor, and the suction gas part is separated from the highpressure discharge part and the motor is installed on the low pressure gas part. Space for motor and storage forrefrigerant is secured in the low pressure gas part to increase the reliability for the liquid compression. Because the sucked refrigerant gas cools the motor and flows to the compressor, separate cooling device to coolthe compressor is not required. Inside the system, oil to lubricate the compressor is mixed with the refrigerant todischarge both the oil and refrigerant during the operation. Because the oil discharged from the compressor canreduce the heat transfer efficiency when thick layer is built up on the inner walls of the condenser and evaporator, device to prevent the refrigerant and oil to be discharged together is added to prevent this issue. Thislubricationsystemensureslongerlifeforthecompressor, improvesthesealingofthecompressionspaceand provides low noise operation. IntroductionThe cooling cycle of ACAH Series can be described using the following Pressure Enthalpy chart. ,,, and in the following chart shows the conditions of the refrigerant. The refrigerant comes into thecompressor motor and cools the motor, and becomes overheated and moves to the suction inlet of the compres-sor. The oil inside the compressor seals the gap between the compressor scrolls and provides lubrication for thebearing to help the compression of the refrigerant. During this time, the refrigerant is compressed and is dis-charged to the air cooled condenser. () The compressed refrigerant passes through the air cooled condenserand exchanges the heat with the outdoor air. The condensed refrigerant then passes the condenser to be over-cooled. (). The refrigerant that passed through the condenser expands in the electronic expansion valveto flow to the evaporator. (). The refrigerant is evaporated in the plate type heat exchanger, the evaporator.() Liquid refrigerant of low temperature pressure passes through the evaporator to cool the water flowing intothe evaporator and the refrigerant itself receives the heat to evaporate to gas condition. () The refrigerant contin-ues to change the phase and continuously repeats the cooling cycle. For heating, the refrigerant flows in thereverse direction to provide hot water. Description of cooling cycle Partial load operationEach cooling cycle operates independently and 1 cooling cycle is composed of 1 inverter compressor and 2 staticspeed compressors as shown below. When the load is less than 40%, it can be operated only with the compressorand when 1 static speed compressor and inverter compressor operates simultaneously, it can respond to about80% of the load. Lastly, when 2 static speed compressors and inverter compressor all operate simultaneously, it canrun up to maximum performance. Inverter compressor increases the RPM after staring to operate to graduallyincrease the cooling capacity. But when it reaches a specific RPM, the RPM is reduced to turn on 1 set of staticspeed compressor. After the static speed compressor is turned on, the inverter compressor increases the RPMagain to increase the cooling capacity, and it repeats the same process to turn on another set of static speed com-pressor. When both static speed compressors are operating, the inverter compressor can increase up to maximumfrequency. The user can operate the product smoothly at optimal condition by setting the cooling capacity based on the linearcontrol of LG Chiller Controller and the product has efficient partial load performance at any load. Selection procedure1. Check usage conditionBefore selecting the model, the following usage conditions must be decided.- Cold and hot water in/out temperature and outdoor temperature- Cold and hot water flow amount (flow amount can be calculated if you know the freezing load and chilled water in/out temperature.)2. Selecting candidate modelRequired rated capability is selected through load calculation, and you can select the corresponding modelby looking at Chapter 8 Cooling/heating capability change table. When you select the candidate model, do not select a model with less volume than the required rated capa-bility, but select a model with the same or bigger volume.3. Performance adjustment for foulingThe data in this technical data manual is based on chilled water fouling coefficient of 0.000018 m/W atsea level. If altitude or fouling coefficient is different, you have to apply appropriate adjustment coefficient form the fol-lowing table to calculate data for the operation condition.AltitudeWater in/outtemperaturedifference ()Fouling coefficient0.000018 m2/W 0.000054 m2/WCooling capabilityPower consumptionCooling capabilityPower consumption Sea level (0m)4 0.991 0.998 0.979 0.9965 1.000 1.000 0.990 0.9986 1.010 1.002 1.001 1.0007 1.020 1.005 1.010 1.0038 1.028 1.006 1.019 1.004500 m4 0.988 1.004 0.979 1.0025 0.998 1.006 0.988 1.0046 1.008 1.008 0.998 1.0067 1.017 1.010 1.008 1.0088 1.026 1.012 1.017 1.0101 000 m4 0.985 1.011 0.977 1.0085 0.995 1.013 0.985 1.0106 1.005 1.015 0.995 1.0127 1.014 1.017 1.005 1.0148 1.023 1.019 1.014 1.0161 500 m4 0.982 1.018 0.974 1.0165 0.992 1.020 0.983 1.0186 1.002 1.022 0.993 1.0207 1.011 1.025 1.003 1.0238 1.020 1.027 1.011 1.0259 Outdoor Unit _ Selection ProcedureAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)5. Selection Procedure4. Performance adjustment after adding freeze and burst prevention solution If cooling operation is performed in Winter, or if water inside the cycle is not removed in the resting phase, youhave to add freeze and burst prevention solution to protect from freeze and burst.Freezer characteristics change by adding freeze and burst prevention solution, so it should be adjusted.Refer to the following table for the adjustment coefficient after adding freeze and burst prevention solution.5. Finalizing the model As a result of verifying product performance and power consumption considering various adjustment coefficientsfor the candidate models, if there is no problem, you can finalize it as the final model. If there is a problem, review again from the candidate model selection stage.1. Site with outdoor temperature is 30, fouling coefficient is 0.000054m/W, altitude is 500m, ethyleneglycol volume concentration 30% added chilled water is used, required cooling capability is 65kW, chilledwater in/out condition is 149.2. Find appropriate model in product dimension table (Chapter 7) and verify power consumption, dimension, etc.- Candidate model ACAH020BBAM: cooling capability 60kW, power consumption 21.9kW, COP 2.74,dimension: 765 x 2 351 x 2 154 mm3. Check the capability and power consumption in the usage condition of the selected model by coolingcapability change table (Chapter 8).- Chilled water in/out condition: in 14 9 condition, cooling capability: 71.6 kW, power consumption:23.2 kW, COP: 3.14. Carry out performance adjustment after fouling and freeze and burst solution addition.- Cooling capability: 71.6 X 0.988 x 0.987 =69.8 kW- Power consumption: 23.2 X 1.006 = 23.3 kW5. Calculate freezer power consumption in usage condition.- Load ratio: required cooling capability / model cooling capability = 65/ 69.8 = 0.93- In rated condition, power consumption model power consumption x load ratio = 23.3 x 0.93 = 21.7 kW6. Calculate flow amount and pressure loss in usage condition.- Formula to get flow amount: /min = kW X 12.9 / TFlow amount = 65 kW X 12.9 / 5 = 168 /min- Pressure loss: from Chilled water head loss table (Chapter 10), get pressure loss of the correspondingmodel in the corresponding flow amount.Pressure loss of ACAH020BBAM at 168/min is about 26kPa, and pressure loss coefficient by addingfreeze and burst prevention solution is 1.124, so total pressure loss is 26 X 1.124=29kPa.7. Installation of ChillerSelecting installation location Precaution when selecting the installation locationSelect the location that fits the following conditions to install the product. Location without direct heat from other heat source Location where noise of the chiller does not have negative impact to the neighbors Check the installation direction of the unit for the seasonal wind during the winter. Install the product so that the seasonal wind does not affect only one side of the product. Location not exposed to strong winds Location that can support the weight of the chiller Location with space for air flow and service Install the boundary sign, danger sign or barricade, if necessary. It is recommended to install a fence around chiller so that people or animals will not be able to access thearea. When installing the product in areas with high humidity during the winter (Coast, seaside, lakeside), install theproduct where it is well ventilated and has plenty of exposure to sunlight. (Ex: Roof top with sunlight) If the product does not run during the winter, establish a plan to use the anti-freeze for the water supply. To prevent the condensed water from flowing, insulate the connected evaporator and pipe. To smoothly drain the condensed water, establish an inclined structure. Avoid installing the product at locations with the following conditions. - Location with corrosive gas such as acid or alkali gas.(Coolant can leak from the corroded pipes.)- Location with electromagnetic wave. (It can cause the product to malfunction from defective parts.)- Location where flammable gas is generated or flows to prevent fire.- Location with high level of carbon fiber or dust- Special location exposed to oil, steam or emulsified gas28 _ Outdoor UnitInstallation of ChillerAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)14. Installation of Chiller Precaution for seasonal wind and winter seasonIn areas with heavy snow or in extremely cold areas, sufficient planning is required for the product to runsmoothly. Even in other areas, planning is required for seasonal wind during the winter season. Snow can go into the air discharge outlet of the condenser to freeze inside the chiller. Therefore install alarge cover over the chiller for areas with heavy snowfall to prevent the snow from accumulating on the top. The chiller can freeze inside when the air inlet is clogged with snow. Therefore install the chiller on the basewith at least twice the height of the average snow accumulation. (Default height of base: 300mm) If there is more than 100mm of snow on top of the chiller, always operate the unit after cleaning the snow. Do not install the product where there could be negative impact from snow in areas with heavy snowfall.Decide the installation direction of the chiller so that the side of the air heat exchanger does not face thedirection of the snow. (Make the side of the air heat exchanger parallel to the direction of the snowfall.) Install a blocker with theheight of the snow accumulation to avoid the snow around the chiller from being sucked into the coil side.(Prepare on site) If the wind comes in one direction of the unit where the seasonal wind is strong, there is a high chance that itcan lead to issue with product capacity or imbalance of load. Therefore install the product so that it has con-sistent effect on the product cycle. If that is not possible, consider using a wind blocker or other devices. Inareas with strong seasonal wind during the winter, apply the wind blocker hood, especially near the coastalarea, without blocking the suction inlet of the chiller considering the direction of the wind. If the chiller isdirectly exposed to the seasonal wind during the winter, separately install a wind buffle. (Prepare on site)29 Outdoor Unit _ Installation of ChillerAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)14. Installation of ChillerIf the product has to be installed inevitably facing the coast, install a wall around the outdoor unit. Install the product where the drainage is smooth. The wall must be made of sufficiently strong material such asconcrete to block the coastal wind and must be 1.5 times largerthan the size of the product to protect the product 1000mmapart. There must be 1000mm of clearance between the walland the chiller for smooth circulation of air. Coastal windWall* Selecting location of chillerInstall the chiller where the building can block the coastal wind. Coastal wind Coastal windInstallation Guide at the seasideCAUTION When installing the chiller near the coast, make sure that it is not directly exposed to the coastal wind. When installing the chiller directly exposed to the coastal wind, separate anti-corrosive treatment must bedone on the condenser of the chiller. 30 _ Outdoor UnitInstallation of ChillerAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)14. Installation of Chiller (Unit: mm)800+h1/2h1800WallAir Ceiling(Unit: mm)8005,000WallAirWhen installing the product, secure minimum space as shown below considering the service, suction and dis-charge of air flow. Consider the ventilation condition. The air cooled chiller must be installed on open space or must have appropriate ventilation. When installed along the wall, there must be sufficient space for ventilation. ReferenceIf the side of the chiller is near the wall and the height of the wall is less than 800mm, the distance between the walland the chiller must be at least 800mm. If the side of the chiller is near the wall and the wall is 800mm or higher, space of half of h1 must additionally be secured on top of the 800mm for the distance between the wall and the chiller. ReferenceIf there is a ceiling on the top part of the chiller, the distance from the chiller to the ceiling must be 5000mm or above. If the front or rear side of the chiller is close to the wall, the distance from the wall to the chiller must be 800mm orabove. 31 Outdoor Unit _ Installation of ChillerAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)14. Permitted water pressure resistance of cold water pipe system is 1MPa To prevent any external heat loss or dew drops forming during the cooling operation on the water pipe system, applythermal insulation treatment. Install the air vent at the output end of the water pipe. (Air vent) If the thermometer is installed on the inlet/outlet of the cold/hot water pipe, the operating condition of the chiller can bechecked. Always install the strainer (50 Mesh or above) that can be cleaned on the water pipe inlet side to filter any alien particlesfrom entering the heat exchanger. Always install the strainer on the leveled pipe. (If sand, trash or rust gets mixed to the cold water system, it can causeproduct failure due to corrosion of metallic parts.) Install the on/off valve on the cold water inlet/outlet and bypass pipe on the pipe direction of the device side.- For the pipe system, it is recommended to install the bypass and clean the pipe before installing the product and duringthe annual pipe cleaning. - On/Off valve blocks the old water to the chiller that is not operating to reduce the power of the pump. Therefore selectwhether to install to fit the need of the site. Install the pressure gauge and thermometer on the inlet and outlet of the water pipe. Always install the flexible joint to reduce the vibration of the pipe and product. - Vibration of water pipe system is absorbed to prevent water leakage. For the cold water system part, make sure to use the component that complies with designed water pressure or above. Before supplying cold water to the chiller, clean inside the pipe system to remove any negative impact of particles to theproduct. 33 Outdoor Unit _ Installation of ChillerAir-Cooled Scroll Chiller (R410A)14. Size of the water pipe must be the same as that of the product or larger. If there is risk of dew drops forming, always install the thermal insulation material on the outlet pipe of the cold water. To avoid connected water pipe from creeping from the load, use appropriate hook for support. To prevent the pipe connected part from freezing during the winter season, always install the drain valve at the mostbottom of the pipe system. Cold water inlet pipe is located at the bottom and the outlet pipe is installed on the top. When connecting several chillers, refer to the following for common pipe size. Cold water pump control If the cold water pump is not operating for a long period of time or if the anti-freeze liquid is not used as the cold water, theanti-freeze pump control must be installed to prevent the pipe from freezing. The vibration of the pump can transfer to the pipe to cause noise indoors. As the plan to prevent the noise from spreadingin the pump, install flexible joints at the inlet/outlet and use the anti-vibration amount for the pump support. CAUTION If the winter outdoor temperature is 0C or below, take following measures to prevent the pipe fromfreezing as shown below.- If the outdoor temperature is low, the circulation water can freeze to damage the heat exchanger ofthe product when the product is stopped. If there is possibility of damage from low outdoor temperature, operate the pump to prevent thewater from freezing. - If the product does not operate for a long period of time during the winter season, remove all the cir-culation water to prevent the damage of heat exchanger and pipe from freezing. - Add anti-freeze additive to prevent the circulation water from freezing during the winter season. Maintain the cold water flux within the designed flux to ensure appropriate chiller performance andreduce the tube damage from rusting, scaling and corrosion.
