INTRODUCTION
This report contains our interpretation of the results
of an airborne magnetic survey flown in the Mcvicar Lake Area,
Ontario in October 1977. A brief description of the survey procedure
together with recommendations for ground follow-up is included.
The survey totalled 1146 line miles and was performed by
Questor Surveys Limited. The survey aircraft was a Trislander
C-GOXZ and the operating base was Pickle Lake, Ontario.
The area outline is shown on a 1:250,000 map at the end of
this report. This part of the National Topographical Series sheet
number 520.
MAP COMPILATION
The base map is an uncontrolled mosaic constructed from
National Air Photo Library l" ^ 264O feet on stable transparent
film from which white prints can be made.
Flight path recovery was accomplished by comparison of the
prints of the 35mm film with the mosaics in order to locate the
fiducial points. These points are approximately 4500 feet apart. The
flight line fiducial co-ordinates are digitized to disc using a
Luscom digitizer. The data stored on magnetic tape is also dumped
to disc. Data Plotting Services Ltd. then, using a contouring
plotting program, is able to plot a contour map of the magnetic
field using a Calcomp 748 flat-bed plotter.
The data is plotted up coarsely using 100 gamma intervals
first. This will reveal any errors in flight path recovery
digitizing. Also in this step the tie line is used to compensate
for any diurnal changes which may have occurred during the course
of the survey. Maps are plotted in this way successively until the
finished product is attained. In the case of the Mcvicar Lake map a
contour interval of 25 gammas was used.
1^'SURVEY PROCEDURE
Terrain clearance was maintained as close to 400 feet as
possible. A normal S-pattern flight path using approximately
one mile turns was used. The equipment operator logged the flight
details and monitored the instruments.
A line spacing of 660 feet was used.
EQUIPMENT
The aircraft are equipped with Mark VI INPUT (R) airborne
E.M. systems and Geometrics G 803 proton precession magnetometers.
The outputs of these instruments together with fiducial timing
marks are recorded by means of galvanometer type recorders using
light sensitive paper. Thirty-five millimeter continuous strip
cameras are used to record the actual flight path.
The instrument used for the magnetic survey was a Geometrics
G 803 proton precession magnetometer consisting of sensing element
and electronic console. The sensing element consists of a toroidally
wound coil with balancing trim turns to minimize noise pick up.
The coil is immersed in a selected hydrocarbon fluid rich in protons.
This is mounted on the nose boom of the aircraft. The electronic
console contains the circuitry required in processing the precession
signal.
The magnetometers, which measure the total magnetic field,
have a sensitivity of l gamma and a range from 2O,OOO gammas to
1OO,OOO gammas.
Because of the high intensity field produced by the INPUT
transmitter, the magnetometer results are recorded on a time-sharing
basis. The magnetometer head is energized while the transmitter is
on, but the read-out is obtained during a short period when the
transmitter is off.
Using this technique, tha head ir, energized for 1.15 seconds
while the precession frequency is being recorded and converted to
gammas. Thus a magnetic reading is taken every 1.3 seconds. This
value is then converted from analogue to digital and recorded on
magnetic tape using the Geometrics 704 Data acquisition system.
INTERPRETATION
The Mcvicar Lake Area lies approximately 40 miles west of
Pickle Lcike, Ontario. The geology of the area is that of a typical
greenstone belt as the rocks are predominantly a mixture of both
acid and basic volcanics and metavolcanics, interbedded with sediments
and metasediments, all of Precambrian age. Strike for this area
is'mainly e'ast-west with dip varying from 50 north to 50 south
in most places.
The magnetic survey has revealed several linear magnetic
anomalies that are quite long ( 2 miles) and are thought to be
formational conductors of IF or formational sulphides.
The anomalies trend with the general east-west strike of the area.
In the western part of the map area, iron formation units are present
in the sediments and the magnetic anomalies are typical of this.
In the south east part of the area, a mafic (gabbroic) intrusion is
present, and is reflected in the magnetic pattern.
