The unique Airbuscommon cockpitoriginated with the A320 and its pioneeringintroduction of digitalfly-by-wire controls.
Similar handling qualitiesprovided with fly-by-wire,along with the identical
cockpits and operatingprocedures were appliedto all of the A320 Family’s
versions, pilots are ableto fly the A318, A319, A320and A321 with only a single
type rating.
As the family grew Airbusdeveloped the possibility ofpilots transitioning from one
Airbus type to another viadifference training instead
of full type rating.
The transition training from A320 Family aircraft to the A380 takes 13 working
days, whilst a pilot with no Airbus FBW experiencerequires 24 working days tocomplete the A380 typerating course. These timesavings lead to lower training
costs for airlines andconsiderably increased crewproductivity. The annualsavings in training and payrollcosts through improvedproductivity from the reducedtransition time can be up to
$300,000 for each newaircraft added to the fleet.
