Fun backyard targetsBored with paper targets? Try these. If you’re teaching someone to shoot, they’ll be more interested if the targets are fun and reactive. All are for .177 lead pellets with a max of 1,000 fps unless other noted.
Even airgunners need hearing protectionEveryone knows firearm shooters need hearing protection. However, some powerful airguns can be very loud. Plus, you’ll be required to wear hearing protection if you go to a shooting range.
Ballistics is the science of the motion of pro-jectiles in flight. For airgunners, ballistics has a special meaning since our projectiles act the special way they do.
New airgunners are often fascinated by hyper-velocity .177 rifles with advertised velocities of 1,400 f.p.s. and faster. But are they aware of what they give up to get these bragging rights?
The lighter the projectile, the faster any air-pow-ered gun will propel it. But the lighter projectile is also more susceptible to drag than a heavier pellet. So, it slows down much sooner than a heavier projectile of the same caliber.
There will be a distance from the muzzle of any airgun where the high-speed pellet slows down be-low a slower and heavier pellet fired from the same airgun. Beyond that, the heavier pellet will always be faster than the lighter one that initially started fast. So, long-range shooting with an airgun seldom starts out at supersonic speed.
When a projectile travels faster than the speed of sound, it creates a pressure wave in front of it that can cause it to lose speed very quickly. How fast it loses speed depends on the shape of the pel-let, its sectional density and the drag caused by its skirt.
Airgun pel-lets have wasp waists and flared skirts that cause high drag as they pass through the air. Just as the fletching on an arrow stabilizes it in flight, so these pellet characteristics are designed to stabilize the pellet—at subsonic speeds. They’re not well-suited to supersonic flight. Airgun pellets that start out supersonic slow down quickly to subsonic velocity, sometimes within 30 feet of the muzzle!
The wadcutter pellet is used exclusively for formal airgun target shooting. Out to 10 meters, a precision wadcutter can be amazingly accurate. But after about 25 yards, that accuracy falls off and other pellet shapes will surpass the wadcutter for accuracy, especially the dome.
Pointed pellets are often touted as having greater penetration because of their shape, and there’s some truth to that. But pointed pellets are seldom as accurate as domed pellets, so a dome will be a better choice for a long-range airgun. Domes don’t do as well as pointed pellets at supersonic speeds; but as we’ve just learned, airgun pellets are not de-signed for supersonic velocities, in general. There-fore, the ballistic difference between a pointed pellet and a dome is inconsequential.
The biggest ballistic lesson every airgunner needs to learn is that airgun pellets do not act like firearms bullets. They aren’t as heavy, nor are they as tough as solid bullets, so they perform different-ly on game. Shot placement is far more important for an airgun hunter because his pellet has no shock to transfer to the game when it impacts. Vital areas must be hit, and game falls most often due to blood loss rather than hydrostatic shock from the impact of the projectile.
