Heat pumps – a change in the culture of heating

We all have heat pumps in our homes!

The fridge

– How often do you adjust the temperature in your fridge?

– How often do you turn your fridge on and off?

– To get the best performance and maximum efficiency from a heat pump turn it on, set the

required temperature and let the intelligent controls do the rest

– For maximum efficiency your heat pump needs to run for longer period of time at a low

rate. Matched to the heat requirement of the property

The amount of time your heating system runs may increase but so will the system

efficiency

What is the ‘Peak Heat loss’ of a property

– All heating designs use 2 reference points – indoor temp, and minimum outdoor

temperature for which the heating will be required (usually 20 C, and -3 C)

– This is the amount of energy needed to maintain 20 C inside at the coldest outdoor

conditions and depends on the property in question

–Some rules of thumb:

–New build house, built to current building regs – 40 watts/sq metre

–New build house, built to 2006 regs – 50 watts/sq metre

–Post 1990’s house with cavity wall and loft insulation – 80 watts/sq.metre

–1970 – 1990 home with good insulation levels – 100 watts/sq metre

These rules of thumb will give a ‘rough’ indication as to the energy

required at peak times (ie -3 C)

20.0ºC-3ºC

General Installation Considerations

Heat Loss

Accurate calculation of the heat loss for

the property is essential for any Heat

Pump installation be it air source or

ground source.

– Reduce the energy requirements

before installing a Heat Pump

– Cavity walls, loft insulation, double

glazing, draft proofing

– Under-sizing will mean at times the

Heat Pump will not meet the heating

requirement.

Correct sizing can only be achieved with a full heatloss calculation

Page 10: Air/Water brine split Heat pump - Amazon Web Servicesdoc.housing.org.uk.s3.amazonaws.com/Presentations... · 2014-10-21 · –It follows therefore that if a heat pump were to be

Heat pump efficiency – Coefficient of performance (CoP)

Heat into heating

system

1kW 4kW

3kW

‘Free’ heat from

external air

Heat pump efficiency is stated as the

Coefficient of Performance (COP)

Heat output (kW)

COP = -------------------------------

Power consumed (kW)

In the example above the COP = 4/1 = 4 (i.e. 400% efficient)

so you get 4kW of heat for 1 kW of electrical power consumed

Electrical power

Page 11: Air/Water brine split Heat pump - Amazon Web Servicesdoc.housing.org.uk.s3.amazonaws.com/Presentations... · 2014-10-21 · –It follows therefore that if a heat pump were to be

11

Air to water heat pump performance – COP

At lower ambient temperatures and at peak electricity rates an AWHP can actually cost more to run than a high efficiency gas boiler – It is essential to ensure that air to water heat pumps

are applied correctly

– Typically electricity is 3x more expensive than gas

– It follows therefore that if a heat pump were to be 3x more efficient than a boiler the

running costs per kW would be the same

– So when heat pump COP is 2.7 (boiler at 0.9) costs are equal and when below 2.7 the

boiler is actually less expensive to run

General Install Considerations

Heat emitters

Underfloor heating

– Runs at low flow temperatures for long periods of time which is

ideal for heatpump systems.

However they are slow to react and not suitable for all

installations.

Panel Radiators

– Wet radiator heating systems traditionally run at high flow

temperatures for short busts of heating which is unsuitable for

heat pump systems.

However if the radiators are correctly size to suit a lower flow

rate and run for longer periods of time they will run efficiently

with a heatpump system and are quicker to react to a heating

need than an under floor system.

Fan assisted radiators

– These are manufactured to run with a low flow temperatures

and are quicker to react compared to underfloor and panel

radiators

However these radiators need a power supply to run the fans

and are more expensive than traditional radiators

Heat emitter selection and the heat pump flow temperature have a big effect on performance. Higher temperatures = Lower efficiencies

Reasons for selecting an air to water heat pump

Will save the end-user money compared to Oil, LPG and standard electric heating systems

– Oil and LPG price volatility is leading to an increase in interest in cost effective alternatives

particularly in rural locations

– Eliminates need for on-site fuel storage, e.g. LPG, oil or biomass

– Excellent running costs compared to alternatives such as standard electric, LPG or oil

– Excellent carbon savings compared to Oil and LPG

– Less external work (and cost) compared to GSHP,

Specifying Air to Water Heat Pumps

When correctly applied air to water heat pumps can significantly reduce CO2 and energy use – Get the install right and you can reap the benefits

– A number of important factors that need to be considered when specifying an air to water heat pump

– AWHP are not part of General Permitted Development rights, you will need to check if permission is

needed

– Consider the possible noise nuisance of outdoor units (neighbour complaints)

– Maximum heating output for domestic applications is around 15kW ( 230V)

– Maximum output temperature is around 55ºC - 60 C

– Efficiency decreases with higher output temperatures and lower ambient temperatures, care must be

taken when applying an AWHP to a high temp radiator system

– When installed as primary heat source, you need to correctly size radiators or specify UFH or fan

assisted radiators

– Currently standard electricity is 3 times more expensive than gas, therefore a heat pump has to be 3

times more efficient before it is cheaper to operate
