Page 1 of 6 AIS Newsletter Dear parents, carers and students On 21st April, we were proud to hold the graduation ceremony for our dear Grade 12 students: Ayoub, Dana, Maha, Majd and Nawal. It was a very proud day for me, the teachers and their parents. My farewell advice was for them to have an honest reflection and leave behind what isn’t helpful, such as habits that are a hindrance to the next chapter of your life. Also, to take forward the valuable lessons they have picked up from their precious experience at school and of course home and life. I would like to share with you my parting gift to the students; a few words to remember... Maha: “If you’re willing to stand for what you believe in, you won’t need advice from me, because you will be able to handle whatever comes”. Ayoub: “Graduation is only a concept, in real life every day you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life. If you can grasp that, you’ll make a difference”. Majd: “Graduation is an exciting time. It’s both an ending and a beginning; it’s warm memories of the past and big dreams.” Dana: “It was never easy but you dared not to give up. If you did you would never be a step closer to your dreams. I am glad you were able to make it through. I am so proud of you”. Nawal: “Promise me you’ll always remember that you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think”. I hope you will share my sentiments and wish the best for the future for our wonderful graduates. Mirna Al-Jouzi School Principal Message from Head of Secondary Dear parents The graduation of senior students was on 21 st April; it was a very special day for us. We wish them all the best and hope they seize every moment and opportunity life blesses them with to make their lives and those of others better. Our G10-G12 students have started their external exams, we wish that they will go through this period of time without stress. The G6-G9 students participated in the International day activities in which they wearing the costumes of the countries they were representing and prepared their food and performed on the stage during the assembly. G6-G9 will sit soon for the end of semester two exams, they should be using their time very constructively during the coming few weeks in revising their subjects. The weather is getting hotter, so we advise our students have their water bottles and to wear school hats during the break. Message from Head of Primary Dear parents Celebrate Success! During the month of May, our primary students will be celebrating their success this year by sharing the knowledge they have gained throughout the year. Our next assembly will be 18 th May where students will be showcasing all they have learned throughout the year. Please speak with your child and ask them what they have learned in all subject areas. You might even learn a thing or two! As the year winds down please ensure your child is well rested and has a healthy diet. This will promote a successful end of the year where students will have excellent behaviour and try their best on the final assessments. Finally, for their own health and safety, students should be wearing a hat outdoors in breaks. Grade 2 Movenpick Visit The Grade 2 students attended a healthy living field trip Wednesday, 3rd May. Students enjoyed making their own cat shaped cheese sandwiches and fruit filled donuts as they learned to be healthy chefs. Each student also had the opportunity to visit the garden where fresh herbs and vegetables are grown for use in the resort kitchen. The children even helped by planting seeds in the garden area. These events were followed by an afternoon of outdoor activities on the beach, in the grass and on the playground. It was a fun and educational day. Tkyiet Um Ali Tkyiet Um Ali (TUA) held an even for the Primary School this month. The students learnt about what poverty and hunger is and how it affects people in Jordan. Students in grades 1 and 2 were given gift bags that included a coin bank, story, booklet of activities, and colouring book. The students will bring back the coin bank which will be collected after two weeks from them to be given back to TUA as a donation to help the charity. A colouring contest took place for Grades 3 and 4, with a theme of hunger and poverty. The pictures were then taken back to TUA’s Amman headquarters to be entered into a national art contest. The results will be announced through their Facebook page. Grade 5 Visit to Wadi Rum
The children enjoyed a fun–filled memorable day in the desert.
They were able to consolidate their learning about how mountains were formed, which was one of their geography topics.
Later, we had a tasty lunch at the Rohaib camp and then finished off the day by sledging down the sand dunes.
So many of the children had never been to Wadi Rum before and they all agreed that it was an amazing place to visit.
We were all very proud to receive a phone call from the Rohaib camp manager who complimented our youngsters on their excellent behaviour. Well done Grade 5!

Professional Golf Tuition at Ayla Golf
Students from Grades 5 and 6 have been taking part in professional golf tuition at Ayla Golf course. The students have already taken 9 lessons and are showing plenty of potential. Areas of tuition covered have been grip, stance, swing and follow-through and all the students are now able to hit the ball from a tee in the academy practice area. The final lesson of tuition will be Monday 8th May.

Multiplication Stars
Students in grades 1-5 have been busy practicing their multi-plication tables to be a "MATH STAR" at AIS. To encourage students to learn their multiplication tables we will have a multiplication facts competition once per week until the end of the school year. Our first competition was held Thursday, 4th May and over 50 students earned a "Math Star!"
Please work with your child on their multiplication times tables at home (there are many free phone apps and computer games to practice our multiplication tables).
Girne American University Talk
Representatives from Girne American University (GAU) have made a visit to AIS for the second time. They gave a presentation, to parents/legal guardians and students, on the university, the facilities and programs offered, as well as scholarships and the visa and application process.
The GAU representatives shared the five core values of the university - access, speed, relevance, value and community - and how these values shape the dedication of making the American model learning opportunities accessible throughout life and to making them challenging and relevant to a diverse population of young adults.

International Day
On Thursday 27th April, students from Pre-School to G11 took part in the 2017 International Day.
Each grade group chose a country to represent and took part in activities reflecting their country include cooking, sculptures and arts, dance, fashion, language and gesture, and history.
During the assembly we witnessed traditional dances from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, China, Egypt, India, South Africa and Mexico. We were also entertained by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police performed by Grade 5. The day culminated in an exhibition where parents were invited to learn more about their child’s chosen country and sample delicious staple dishes.
At Aqaba International School we endeavour to help our students become open-minded individuals. Events like the International Day help to promote international mindedness and global citizenship.
Thank you to all the students and teachers for their hard work and dedication to make this day a success, along with a big thank you to parents for coming along and supporting the day.
Science Fair Awards A great team of judges have evaluated the projects for the 2nd Annual Science Fair through a transparent process by assessing and evaluating using an International rubric.
The judges have reached the following outcomes for every grade level, making it clear why it was give to every grade level is because ‘Scientific Inquiry’ as a theme is slightly different in terms of difficulty.
