Sholosh Seudot “You Gotta be Kiddin’ Me” Halacha Discussion

One there was a shul of wealthy congregants who decided that the time had come to renovate their shul and replace its old and worn out furniture. They spared no expense on making their shul as beautiful as could be, at the price of several hundred thousand dollars. In addition, they decided to repair their Sifrei Torah, which were in need of corrections after many years of wear.

A sofer, who was asked to inspect them, discovered that all three were pasul and would require extensive work to repair them. He offered to fix all three for $6,000.

“I can give you $1000 for all three,” said the gabbai. The sofer saw that it was pointless to argue so he returned the Sifrei Torah and went home.

A week later he received a phone call from the gabbai. “These three Sifrei Torah are still waiting to be repaired,” he said. “In the meantime the shul is still using them. They are not fulfilling their mitzvah of Torah reading, and reciting berochos, levatalah over pasul Sifrei Torah all because of you.” (Clearly the gabbai’s claim was unfair. It was the congregation’s responsibility to procure kosher Sifrei Torah and they had no one to blame but themselves for failing to do so. However, that is how the story goes.)

The sofer, who was a yerei Shamayim, contacted another sofer he knew to explain the situation. They decided that despite their loss of work time, they would make the sacrifice to rescue their wayward brethren and let Hashem pay them for their efforts, even if the congregation would not. They called the gabbai who was happy to hear the good news. “I’ll bring you the first 2 Sifrei Torah today, and we’ll keep the third to use in the meantime,” he said.

The 2 sofrim applied all their efforts over the course of a full month until finally their work was done They drove the 2 Sifrei Torah back to the shul, replaced them in the Aron Kodesh, and went back home, their hearts full of joy with the knowledge of the good deeds they had done.

On the way back home they needed to use the restroom but could find nowhere to stop on the busy highway. Eventually they found a dirt path that ran off of the highway. They turned on to the path and followed it until they came to a Christian cemetery. They parked their car and started walking towards the restroom inside the cemetery. When they reached the gate, they were stopped by an armed guard. “Who are you and what are you doing here?’ he asked. Just then, they saw a funeral procession going by. They gave their names and told him that they had come to take part in the funeral.

“I.D. please,” asked the guard. They had no idea why security was so tight at the cemetery, but they took out their driver’s licenses and showed them to the guard. The guard wrote down their names and contact details and waved them inside. So as not to be guilty of lying, they joined the small group of people at the funeral, who looked at them askance, wondering what these Orthodox Jews were doing at a Christian funeral. The funeral was soon over, so they made use of the restroom, returned to the car and left.

Two weeks later they both received letters asking them to appear in court regarding the funeral in which they participated. There was no need to bring a lawyer, the letter said. They had no idea what kind of libel might be waiting for them in court, so they waited anxiously for the court day to arrive, fearing the worst.

Finally, the appeared before the judge, who asked their names and if they had participated in the funeral weeks earlier. “Yes,” they answered hesitantly, not knowing what to expect. With a dramatic flair, the judge said, “Then I have some good news for you. You are entitled to $100,000 each as a token of appreciation for attending the funeral.” The deceased died wealthy but childless, with no known relatives, so he left instructions in his will to divide his entire in heritance among everyone who would attend his funeral.

On the way back home they looked over the checks they had received and saw that it was from a man named Goldstein. It turned out that he was in fact Jewish, a Holocaust survivor, who married the gentile woman who had rescued him.

The problem was that the will was written according to civil law, but was invalid by Torah law. According to Torah law, his inheritance still belonged to his closet relatives, in this case some unknown cousins, wherever they might be. Were they allowed to keep the money, or perhaps not, since according to halachah it belonged to unknown relatives? What is the Answer? With Rabbi Rothman during Shalosh Seuda

Supervision of Children by Parents When in the Building

The leadership of the Shul wishes to remind parents that all children are either to be in our organized children’s programme or accompanying a parent at all times. In addition, parents are responsible for damage caused by children not within the programmes. Our children’s programme is well supervised and our Mom’s & Tots programme is running, so please assist us in seeing that children are not allowed to roam through the building unsupervised. As much as we are truly glad to have children in the building during our programmes or accompanying their parents at our events, we must require parents to be vigilant in supervising their children. We are concerned not only for damage within the building, but more so, we are concerned that a child may wander off the premises on his or her own. Your assistance, oversight and vigilance is greatly appreciated.

Profiles

This week we continue our new feature in the bulletin with the eleventh installment of PROFILES

Each week, we profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive manner to help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we spotlight the Bar Mitzvah boy Aaron Hoffer.

TCS: Being the youngest in your family you don’t usually get the spotlight shown on you. How do you like it?

Aaron: I think it is pretty cool. Don’t mind stepping out of my brother’s shadows at all. Especially since under their shadow is where I am usually being beaten to a pulp.

TCS: Are you excited about being called to the Torah this Shabbos?

Aaron: I am 60% nervous and 40% excited.

TCS: Very mathematical. Can we get some confidence intervals to go with the pie chart?

TCS Editor: Pie. Where? What Flavour?

TCS: How long have you been preparing for your Bar Mitzvah?

Aaron: It has almost been a month; seriously, I started on the 6th day of Chanukah. My teacher is Rabbi Haskel Bahar who had the same Parasha.

TCS: Is this your first time on a big stage?

Aaron: No. I am the Student Council President at Eitz Chaim as were both my brothers Eitan and Ezra.

TCS: What was your campaign strategy?

Aaron: To get more votes than the other guy, I want to keep the Hoffer dynasty alive.

TCS: Are there are other sibling streaks you want to continue?

Aaron: I want to be a good baseball player like my siblings and drive my Mom crazy. I have very good role models for the latter.

TCS: Being the youngest, what are some of the advantages and disadvantages?

Aaron: I get to do things at an earlier age than my siblings.

TCS: That would explain your driving the minivan to get to this interview.

Aaron: The down side I get, hand-me-down clothes that are never in style, and not as many pictures of me. My dad Newton tells me that I was born during a time of transition after Kodak stopped developing film but before anyone had cell phone cameras.

TCS: When you are not in school or studying for your Bar Mitzvah how do you like to spend your time?

Aaron: Collecting hockey and baseball cards. I am a Leaf and Penguins fan. I am also a baseball fan like my father. He also tried to teach me to play the drums but I hated to practice.

TCS: What school subjects do you like?

Aaron: Science, especially the explosion parts.

Page 8: Aish Thornhill Community Shul Shabbat Bulletin - Noachfiles.constantcontact.com/5a474c8b001/e73ee386-8435-4bc3... · 2016. 11. 3. · Nov 4/5, 2016 – 4 Chesvan 5777 Candle Lighting:

TCS: And we let you be a youth leader?

TCS Editor: And we let you be a writer for the bulletin?

TCS: Do you enjoy being the king of middle school or are you looking forward to being a freshman in high school?

Aaron: Definitely enjoy being king of middle school.

TCS: Any memories of the AISH youth department growing up in the shul?

Aaron: I ran away from Youth groups to visit my grandma when I was 4.

Mom: I was head of the Youth Department at the time. The one positive is that since it was my child I didn’t have to deal with an angry mother, but Aaron did

TCS: What do you like about AISH now?

Aaron: It is still relatively small with better groups than other shuls. In fact, they got better when I started helping out.

TCS: What do you want to be when you grow up?

Aaron: A hockey player and then a lawyer.

TCS: What intrigues you about law?

Aaron: I like the drama.

TCS: You don’t need to be a lawyer for drama. Just start dating.

TCS Editor: I think he is a little young for that.

TCS: Just because you couldn’t get a date till you were middle age doesn’t mean he has to wait.

TCS Editor: If he wants drama, he should join the TCS Board.

TCS: Before we go, Stuart is busy this week taking down the sukkah and trying to figure the numerical sequence of the Boards. So you are president for the week. What changes would you make?

Aaron: Better toys for the group and take them to a Jay’s game. And get wings for Kiddish.

Unidentified voice in the Background: Shred all of mom’s e-mails.
