ReliabilityAvailabilityServiceability

Why am I telling you this?

A good reminder:

RAS is only important,

when you hit a failure

then it is absolutely vital

Raspberry Pi RAS nothing like POWER RAS

but then it only costs 50€$£

POWER9 server arrive in Max Performance mode except the S914This is a default mode for all S9xx, E950 and E980 servers

$ lparstat -E 1 3

System configuration: type=Shared mode=Uncapped smt=8 lcpu=8 mem=8192MB ent=0.50 Power=Dynamic-Performance

Physical Processor Utilisation:

--------Actual-------- ------Normalised------user sys wait idle freq user sys wait idle ---- ---- ---- ---- --------- ---- ---- ---- ----

0.000 0.001 0.000 0.499 3.9GHz[119%] 0.000 0.001 0.000 0.498 0.000 0.001 0.000 0.499 3.9GHz[119%] 0.000 0.001 0.000 0.499 0.000 0.001 0.000 0.499 3.9GHz[119%] 0.000 0.001 0.000 0.499 $

lparstat reporting Dynamic Perf mode is a known bug in lparstat and (I think a couple of other). So Dynamic Performance mode = Max Performance mode on POWER9.

Don’t Panic!

POWER9 Max == Dynamic

AIX User Meeting 2 UPDATE

Can you help? PLEASE!

Older Open Source RPM packages don’t mix with the new AIX Toolbox RPMS

1. Been told stop workloads

2. Remove all the older RPMs completely

3. Add Yum from the official YUM Bundle

4. Add the RPMs you removed but only from the AIX Toolbox

5. Life is good

Exposes underlying hard mistakes!

Still working on this – update next time

AIX User Meeting 1

Fun facts or favourite features!

AIX has a rmss command – Reduced Memory Size Simulator

usage: rmss [-s startmemsize] [-f finalmemsize] [-d deltamemsize][-n numiterations] [-o outputfile] command

rmss -c memsize

rmss -r

rmss -p

Note that the rmss command is incompatible with the AIX DLPAR

component, and its usage may result in a hung system. The drmgr command provides a safe memory removal function in a

DLPAR environment.

Questions: How to raise AIX’s profile in 2020?

How to explain all the brilliant features of AIX to newbies?

How to remind the “old guys” who take a lot for granted!
