Who we are and what we do

Our legacyThe companies brought together to create Aker Solutions were established in the first half of the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. Cutting edge tech-nology and engineering providers from the very beginning, they delivered products including steam engines for rail and marine use and a range of industrial ironworks.

Over the next 100 years, the busi-nesses grew significantly. In the mid-1900s, both Aker and Kvaerner were international corporations with activities in ship building, hydro power, wood processing and other process operations, mechanical workshops and other industries.Through the 1970s, 80s and 90s, they developed their capabilities and experience as suppliers of complete solutions to offshore and onshore oil and gas and process-ing projects. They each grew or-ganically and through international acquisitions to be leaders in their markets.

On 11 March 2002, the former Kvaerner group and the Aker Mari-time group (comprising the oil and gas activities of the wider Aker group) were merged, and started to operate as one company under the name Kvaerner. On 29 March 2004, following a restructuring of bothAker and Kvaerner, Aker Kvaerner was established. On 2 April it was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Four years later, on 3 April 2008 Aker Kvaerner changed its name to Aker Solutions.

Our deliveries enable our customers to build, efficiently operate and effectively maintain their facilities. Examples include complete offshore platforms, drilling equipment packages and subsea systems for oil and gas developments, and major mining and metals production facilities.

OwnershipAker Solutions is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange with the ticker AKSO. Aker Solutions largest shareholder is Aker Holding AS, with a 40.27 percent stake in the company. Aker Holding AS is owned by Aker ASA (60 percent), the Norwegian Government (30 percent), SAAB AB (7.5 percent) and Investor AB (2.5 percent).

  • The experienceto deliverOffshore exploration and production of oil and gas is moving into ever more challenging areas, such as deeper waters and harsher environments. With more than 40 years experience from many of the worlds most challenging field developments, Aker Solutions has the proven track record, competence and attitude to deliver for our customers for the challenges to come.

  • According to some current estimates, much of the so-called easy oil usually meaning conventional re-sources onshore, in shallow water and in benign environments offshore has already been found, and much has already been produced. At the same time, the worlds demand for energy continues to grow.

As a result of this expected growing en-ergy gap, new areas for exploration and production are increasingly being consid-ered, including deeper water and harsher environments. Another reason for growing interest in new offshore areas is technol-ogy breakthroughs, including improve-ments in sub-salt seismic imaging for

deepwater and improved HSE measures for harsh environments.

Significant reservoirs have already been discovered and fields developed in such new areas, and more are expected to be found. Key areas of current interest include the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West of Africa, North West Australia, India, Malay-sia, Eastern Canada and the Norwegian and Barents Sea, in addition to Eastern Canada and other sub-arctic or arctic areas.

Regardless of geographic area, deep-water exploration and production requires technology investments, including floating facilities with appropriate riser and moor-ing systems. Operations in harsh environ-ments require investments to ensure regu-

larity of production, with design for health, safety and environment.

Big investments carry big stakes for operators around the world. Our compe-tent and experienced engineering, con-struction and project management resources stand ready to take on the big-gest technological challenges in offshore markets around the world, and to deliver with confidence the results our customers seek.

Vast maritime heritageFounded in the mid-1800s, with roots that date back to the 1700s to the industrial revolution in Great Britain and the Nordic countries Aker Solutions has conquered new offshore frontiers for centuries.

Starting from our foundation in ship-building and mechanical engineering, Aker Solutions continues to play a central role in the worlds marine history. Our business has grown from the North Sea, where operations have always been challenging. As a result of harsh weather conditions and comprehensive safety regulations, operations in the North Sea have long been at the very technological edge, and in the front in terms of the highest HSE standards.

An early front-runnerAker Solutions constructed its first drilling rig in 1966, with the Ocean Viking, based on a design by others. This was the rig made the discovery of the giant Ekofisk field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, where the Norwegian oil adventure had its birth. Aker Solutions has since played a key role in the development of this giant field, which continues to this day.

In the early 1970s, we signed our first contract for a drilling rig based on our own design, called Aker H-3. This has

  • since become what is likely the worlds most successful semi-submersible drilling rig design, with 37 units delivered for international operation through the 1970s and 1980s. A number of Aker H-3 rigs have later been converted to production platforms which continue to operate around the world.

In the early 1980s, our history opened a new chapter, with the development of a monohull production platform. This resulted in the first purpose-built FPSO in the North Sea, the Petrojarl 1. This design has successfully operated on several locations on the Norwegian and the UK continental shelves since 1986, and our Tentech design represent about 50 % of all the purpose-built FPSOs in UK and Norwegian waters.

Setting the North Sea standardIn the late 1980s, Aker Solutions was key to the first development off Norway to use a floating production unit, the develop-ment of the Veslefrikk field at about 175 metres water depth, in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Veslefrikk B, a semi-submersible production platform for processing and accommodation, was converted from a drilling platform by Aker Solutions.

In the early 1990s, Aker Solutions developed Snorre A in the North Sea, an integrated production, drilling and quar-ters (PDQ) unit, for 300 metres water depth. This was one of the first tension leg platforms (TLP), and we carried out detail design, topsides and tendon fabrication, platform integration, design and manufac-

turing of riser systems, as well as suction anchor construction and installation.

Later in the same decade, Aker Solu-tions made an important break-through in the market with the semi-submersible drilling, accommodation and production facility, Njord A, with production start-up in 1997. This platform, where Aker Solu-tions carried out front-end design and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Con-struction), operates at water depth of around 330 metres, with a displacement of 45 000 tonnes.

Drawing on the Njord A design, Snorre B, which came on stream in June 2001, is a new generation semi-submersible pro-duction, drilling and quarters (PDQ) plat-form developed by Aker Solutions, devel-oped under an EPC contract, including

  • tow-out and installation. The platform has 56 000 tonnes displacement and operates at a similar water depth as Snorre A.

Taking our knowledge to new marketsAround the turn of the century, Aker Solu-tions turned its sights on the international floater market. The first major break-through came in 1999, when Aker Solutions carried out the engineering and procurement on the Laminaria FPSO, including construction management of module fabrication and hull fabrication. This vessel operates at 400 me-ter water depth in the Timor Sea, 550km north-west of Darwin, Australia.

In 2001/2003 came a significant break-through for Aker Solutions design for production platforms, with the front-end engineering design (FEED) for two semi-submersible production platforms in the Campos basin off Brazil, the P-51 (Marlim Sul) and P-52 (Roncador), operating at 1255 meter and 1800 meter water depths respectively.

    These platforms, with a displacement

of more than 80 000 tonnes, made use of a deep draft semi-submersible design, and were among the first applications of integrated semi, mooring and riser analy-sis, with both flexible and steel catenary risers. This design was also licensed later, in 2007 for a third platform, P-56.

In 2005, Aker Solutions, in a joint ven-ture with Peter Kiewit & Sons, success-fully completed an EPC contract for the complete topside facilities for the White Rose FPSO, operating at a water depth of 105 metres, in the in harsh environment 350 km east of Newfoundland, Canada.

In 2006/2007, Aker Solutions made the first use of deep draft semisubmersible (DDS) concept design in the Gulf of Mex-ico, when it carried out the design of the hull, mooring and risers, and the delivery of the hull, for the Blind Faith platform, operating in deep water at 2000 meter water depth.

Predictable executionIn 2005, Aker Solutions delivered the engineering, procurement, construction

and hook-up for the semi-submersible production platform for the Kristin gas and condensate field, including design and fabrication of the deck, process fa-cilities and utilities and all module hook up. Located in the south-western part of the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea, with water depths from 240-370 meter, the reservoir is located almost 000 me-tres below ground. This leads to high pressure and temperature in the reser-voir at 900 bar and 170C respectively higher than on any other field so far developed on the Norwegian continental shelf.

In 2010, Aker Solutions delivers the platform to the oil and gas field Gja, at 380 meters water depth in the North Sea. This will be the first floating platform in the North Sea to get its electricity from the mainland. Aker Solutions carried out the front-end and detail design and engineer-ing for the topside and hull as well as the procurement, construction and hook-up of the topside. We will also install the mooring system, transport the platform, install it in the North Sea and supply the

  • Semi-submersible drilling rigs

Over a period of more than 40 years, Aker Solutions has been responsible for the design and construction of a large number of the semi-submersi-ble drilling rigs delivered for world-wide operations. Our track record is the result of close co-operation with leading drilling operators and oil companies with continuous focus on improvement and innovation to meet new industry demands.

Aker Solutions has a world-class track-record as a provider of semi-submersible drilling rigs. A total of 39 units of Aker H-3, H-4 and H-6 design have been built. 20 delivered from own yards, the remaining built by other yards on license.

An offshore pioneerAs early as in 1966, our company con-structed the pioneer oil drilling rig Ocean Viking for offshore operation, as the first drilling rig ever constructed in Norway

This platform was immortalised in the second half of 1969, when it made the first economic petroleum discovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, during oper-ations for ConocoPhillips, the giant Ekofisk field, which is still in operation.

Worlds most popularIn 1971, we signed the first contract for a drilling rig based on our Aker H-3 design, likely the worlds most successful semi-submersible drilling rig design. 37 units of Aker H-3 and H-4 design have since been built for worldwide operations. 18 delivered from Aker Solutions own yards, the remaining built by other yards on license.

Worlds most advancedRecently, the success of the Aker H-3/H-4 has been followed up with the Aker H-6e, likely the worlds most advanced semi-submersible drilling rigs. Two units have been built so far, Aker Barents and Aker Spitsbergen. They are specially designed to meet high environmental standards and can operate in ultra deep waters,

harsh environments, extreme tempera-tures and at long distances from supply infrastructure.

Cost-effective, flexible and efficientThe Aker H-7000 design combines the ac-cumulated operational experience of our clients with state of the art design and technology. Aker H-7000 offers a cost ef-fective, flexible and efficient design devel-oped with careful attention to safety, working environment and low emissions.

This design is one of Aker Solutions responses to the markets demand for a new generation of highly efficient drilling and completion units.

A wide portfolioA wider portfolio of drilling semi submersi-bles are also being developed, with the Heavy Intervention Vessel, named Aker H-3000, as one of the next representing a new generation of semi submersibles.

Our strategy for the design of new drill-ing rigs includes a focus on efficiency, safety, operability and new industry demands. Our final designs will always be performed in close co-operation with the customers and yards.

Modifications and upgradesAker Solutions also provides modifications and upgrades to drilling rig operators and owners. This includes services to achieve optimal payload, deck area and opera-tional abilities. We aim for designs in close co-operation with customers and in ac-cordance with authorities and classifica-tion societies rules and regulations.

  • Aker H-6e for ultra deep waters and harsh environmentsThe Aker H-6e (e for extreme) semi-submersible drilling rig design is Aker Solutions response to the offshore industrys demand for a new genera-tion offshore drilling rig. The plat-forms are specially designed to meet high environmental standards and can operate in ultra deep waters, harsh environments, extreme tem-peratures and at long distances from supply infrastructure.

In 2009, Aker Solutions delivered the first Aker H-6e platforms Aker Spitsbergen and Aker Barents, two of the worlds larg-est, most advanced and most robust semi-submersible drilling rigs, to its client, Aker Drilling. With these units, the Aker H

family is on its way to find oil and gas for the next generation, at water depths and in areas that were inaccessible only a few years ago. They are large, modern, safe and efficient, designed and built to drill 10 000 metre-long wells in water depths of up to 3 000 metres

The unique hull design provides excel-lent stability, which ensures efficient drill-ing under weather conditions that would force less advanced rig types to shut down. The excellent motion characteristics also contribute to creating a safer work-place. Significant storage capacity ensures less dependence on regular supply deliv-eries. The double RamRigs enable par-allel operation, improving operational effi-ciency.

Great emphasis has been placed on health, safety and the environment as well as on the quality of the units. The rigs are fully winterised and take particular care of the environment by limiting emissions and discharges. This makes them highly suita-ble for operations in sensitive environ-ments. The solutions of the future are built into the rigs in everything the choice of

materials, construction processes and technical specifications.

Constructing the rigs has been a major project for the Aker group of companies over the last few years, with significant additional work for the industry in Norway and for international suppliers. At the yard in Stord, Norway, more than 4 000 people from 40 nations were working on the project at its peak. We carried out the design and engineering work in Oslo and Kristiansand, Norway, while hull construc-tion started in Dubai. The hulls were built and launched, then towed to Stord. After a journey that lasted about 50 days, the hulls arrived at the yard, where the topsides had already been constructed. The giant pieces were then mated one of the culminating acts in a project that had been the centre of great interest from day one.

Even the Discovery Channel followed the project closely, creating a 45-minute episode of their series MegaBuilders around the H-6e.

  • New competitive drilling floaters: Aker H-7000In managing Aker Solutions product portfolio, a new class of semi-sub-mersible drilling rig design branded Aker H-7000 has been developed for deepwater applications. The service area for Aker H-7000 is worldwide, with the exception of the extreme conditions of the North Atlantic in winter season. The primary drivers for the new design have been flexibil-ity and cost efficiency.

The design builds on experience from the Aker H-series, with its good motion char-acteristics and well-proven concept. In order to facilitate floatover integration, the vertical trusses have been eliminated; however horizontal diagonals, similar to that of the Njord production semi-sub-mersible, have been retained to alleviate

the deck from dynamic loads and fatigue. This is a highly valued feature among op-erators, allowing for easy modifications of the topside structure for adaptation to new equipment, which is likely to occur over the lifetime of the unit.

Current series includes applications of 5 000 and 7 000 tonnes payload. In addi-tion to the semi-submersible drilling rig designs, a drillship design for ultra deep-water is also under development by Aker Solutions.

  • Gja production platform at Aker Solutions yard at Stord in Norway.

GjaAker Solutions, a leading provider of semi-submersible production plat-forms, will deliver the Gja platform in the North Sea in 2010.

Gja is a field with estimated reserves of 82 million barrels of oil and condensate and 40 billion cubic metres of gas. The nearby Vega field, a satellite development, has estimated reserves of an additional 26 million barrels of condensate and 18 bil-lion cubic metres of gas.

Gja is currently among the largest ongoing field developments in the North Sea. It will be the first floating platform to be supplied with electric power from shore, enabling a significant reduction in emissions.

The field is being developed using a mobile, semi-submersible production plat-form and five subsea templates. Aker Solutions carried out the front-end and detail design and engineering for the top-side and hull as well as the procurement,

construction and hook-up of the topside. We are also carrying out the installation of the mooring system before we transport the platform, install it in the North Sea and supply the platforms steel tube umbili-cals.

The mating of the 20 000 tonne top-side, covering an area similar to a soccer field, and the 15 000 tonne hull was suc-cessfully carried out outside Aker Solu-tions yard at Stord in Norway in Decem-ber 2009. The mating had to be carried out within tolerances of just 25 millimetres (1 inch) in all directions.

I am impressed by this operation. It was well planned, safe and efficient and carried out with the utmost precision, says Statoils project manager, Kjetel Rokseth Digre. Gja licensees are GDF Suez E&P Norge, Petoro, Statoil, Shell and RWE Dea. • KristinKristin is a gas and condensate field located in the south-western part of the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea. Discovered in 1996, and located almost 5 000 metres below ground, the reservoir ranks as the highest pressure and highest temperature field ever tapped on the Norwegian continental shelf at 13,195 psi (910 bar) and 338F (170C).

The field has been developed with 12 pro-duction wells in four subsea templates, tied back to a semi-submersible produc-tion platform.

On the production platform, Aker Solu-tions delivered the engineering, procure-ment, construction and hook-up (EPCH). This contract covered design and fabrica-tion of the deck, process facilities and util-

ities and all module hook up. This was the first HPHT (high pressure, high tem-perature) gas floater, and was delivered on time, in March 2005.

The Kristin semi-submersible is a proof of the strength of Aker Solutions project execution model and construction meth-ods, together with planning, procurement and information management methods and system tools. Says Brd Heimset, who was Statoils project director for Kris-tin, Aker Solutions have reason to be proud of their project execution model. We are generally satisfied with project execution. They have shown again that they are professional in handling these major tasks.

For the subsea system, Aker Solutions delivered the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the equipment,

including four templates, wellheads with christmas trees and control systems, umbilical and associated installation equipment.

Kristin is operated by Statoil, and is currently producing 10 million cubic metres of gas per day. Daily production capacity from the field is 125 000 barrels of condensate and just over 18 million cubic metres of rich gas.

  • Skarv FPSO under construction by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea.

  • Aker Solutions is a frontrunner in the development of purpose-built float-ing production, storage and offload-ing (FPSO) facilities for oil and gas. The company has a comprehensive product portfolio ranging from its well known Tentech FPSO design to generic designs for the North Sea/Canada, Australia/Gulf of Mexico and West of Africa and concepts for liq-uefied natural gas (LNG) re-gasifica-tion, production and offloading.

Aker Solutions history within FPSOs started in the early 1980s, with the devel-opment of a monohull production platform. This resulted in the first purpose-built FPSO in the North Sea, the Petrojarl 1. This design has successfully operated on several locations on the Norwegian and the UK continental shelves since 1986.

Market leading designIn total, the Tentech FPSO design has been chosen for 9 projects in the North Sea region, representing more than 50 per cent of all the purpose-built FPSOs in UK and Norwegian waters.

The latest project is the Skarv FPSO for BP in the Norwegian Sea, with a Tentech 975BP design. Aker Solutions has carried out front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the hull and topside, and the overall system design for the field, as well as detail engineering, procurement and construction management assistance (EPcma) for the topside.

In addition to the Tentech FPSO design, new generic FPSO designs have been developed to meet new markets.

Tailored concepts for the North Sea/CanadaAker Solutions offers generic concepts for FPSOs for the North Sea and Canada, typically aimed at field developments in 100-350 meter water depths, with signifi-cant 100 years waves of up to 16-18 m/s. This design features 500 000 -1Mbbls storage capacity, with turret mooring and thruster assisted heading control.

New concept for West of AustraliaAker Solutions is developing a new ship-shaped FPSO turret moored design in-tended for cyclonic conditions West of Australia. This is the 1st permanently moored FPSO designed to stay on loca-tion even in a 10 000 year cyclonic storm. The ongoing FEED includes hull, turret and moorings.

Positioned for the Gulf of MexicoAker Solutions FPSO concept for the Gulf of Mexico is typically aimed at field developments in 1500 meter water depths, and with extreme hurricane wind speeds. This design features 900 000-1Mbbls storage capacity, double hull, with turret mooring either fixed or disconnectable, for abandonment in case of hurricanes.

This product development was initiated as a consequence of the trend in the Gulf of Mexico of moving into increasingly deeper water and away from the existing infrastructure of transport pipelines. Our design has been developed in close cooperation with some of the major oil companies, and has been 3rd party con-cept reviewed by Det norske Veritas (DNV).

Ready for FEEDs in the West of AfricaAker Solutions FPSO concept for the West of Africa is typically aimed at field develop-ments in deep water. This design features 2Mbbls storage capacity and spread moor-ing, i.e. with a fixed heading with mooring lines attached to port and starboard bow and stern. A turret-moored option has been de-veloped as well.

The vessel has double sides, similar to the North Sea FPSO, but only a single bottom. The main particulars and struc-tural arrangement have been optimised with respect to steel weight, the main cost driver for a ship hull. At the same time, the hull is flexible with respect to the arrange-ment of the process facilities. The hull can accommodate a variety of topside alter-natives with only minor adjustment to the hull structure.

Floating LNG solutionsAimed at the global liquefied natural gas market, Aker Solutions offers Tentech concepts for floating liquefaction, storage and offloading (FLNG) as well as a floating storage and regassification unit (FSRU). These designs feature turret or spread mooring, with side-by-side or tandem off-loading.

  • SkarvThe Skarv floating production stor-age and offloading (FPSO) vessel is the biggest ever built for deployment on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). It will serve the Skarv and Idun fields, located just below the Arctic circle in the northern Norwegian Sea. Aker Solutions is responsible for the projects front-end engineering de-sign (FEED) and detail engineering, procurement and construction man-agement assistance (EPcma).

Skarv and Idun are combined oil and gas developments, with 75 percent of the re-serves as gas and 25 percent liquids. The resource base consists of hydrocarbons from several different reservoirs and struc-tures. Concept studies demonstrated that the best development solution was a FPSO with subsea equipment tie-backs.

The major work for Aker Solutions has been to design the topside for the FPSO and performing the planning and execu-tion of procurement for the topsides on behalf of BP, says Arne Bjrlo, project director for the Skarv project until January 1. Samsung Heavy Industry in South Korea is carrying out the fabrication and installation of the hull and topside.

I am very pleased with the Aker Solu-tions project team delivering Skarv. We established ambitious delivery plans both for engineering and procurement, and the team has delivered consistently, on schedule and below budgets. This makes me very proud, and is also well recog-nised by our client, says Bjrlo. Inge Laskemoen is now our project manager for Skarv.

ShtokmanA consortium comprising Aker Solu-tions, Technip France and SBM Off-shore in 2009 was awarded a con-tract for the Concept Definition and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for the Floating Production Unit (FPU) for the Integrated Development of the Shtokman Gas & Condensate Field Phase I project by Shtokman Development AG.

The scope of work includes design, FPU concept definition, FEED design for the hull, turret & mooring system and top-sides. The work is performed by an inte-grated team involving the three partners of the consortium, with Aker Solutions as leader.

We are very pleased to be part of the initial phases of the development of the worlds largest offshore gas field. Equally important for us is the establishment of the partnership with Technip and SBM. We build on each others expertise and capabilities and are able to take on more assignments than what we could do alone, says Simen Lieungh, President & CEO in Aker Solutions.

Skarv FPSO under construction by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea.

I am very pleased with Aker Solutions performance as EPcma contractor for the Skarv FPSO. They have delivered a qual-ity product according to a challenging schedule. Their robust project execution processes have provided transparency and control, says P.T. McHugh, BPs project director on the Skarv Development Project.

Skarv is located at a water depth of 370 meters. This is a typical place of operation for an FPSO. Such vessels are also well suited to a combined oil and gas field, like this one. An FPSO provides the necessary deck space for gas processing facilities, while at the same time allowing for storage of oil, says Bjrlo.

Aker Solutions has a long track record, providing the majority of the floating pro-duction, storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs) for the Norwegian continental shelf. The Skarv development includes a number of innovations on previous con-cepts.

The modules used on the topside are bigger than usual, stretching across the entire width of the deck. This gives us a more effective building process, because each module can be finished separately with a lot less hook-up on assembly, says Bjrlo.

There are also innovations in terms of HSE. BP has defined environmental tar-gets for the vessel that in several areas are stricter than the regulations. So we have focused on finding and using solutions that minimise spill and pollution risk. For instance, there are very strict guidelines for discharged production water, twice as strict as government regulations.

(AMKC), in Newfoundland. In addition to personnel recruited locally in Newfound-land and elsewhere in Canada, key project staff from Aker Solutions offices in both Norway and Scotland were mobilised to St. Johns to complement the team.

The topsides design was based on North Sea and previous Eastern Canada developments most relevant to meet the harsh environment on the Grand Banks, says Jarle Tautra, Executive Vice Presi-dent in Aker Solutions.

The end result of this effort was that AMKC was able to deliver the vessel, complete with 16 topsides modules fabri-cated entirely in Canada, the majority being in the Marystown area, on the scheduled delivery date in early July and within budget. The vessel sailed away on August 18th, 2005.

A project of this magnitude had never been completed in Newfoundland and for the Aker Solutions affiliate which partici-pated in AMKC, the project award was regarded as a major milestone in expand-ing the companys profile in the Canadian market.

  • Tension-leg platforms (TLP)

Aker Solutions has broad experience from a number of installed tension-leg platforms (TLP) and working with a number of prospects. The team can perform sizing, design and analyses of TLPs from concept studies to de-tailed design.

Aker Solutions long experience with TLP design from the Snorre TLP, the Heidrun TLP to todays modern TLPs gives us a unique experience base. Aker Solutions has developed several new TLP concepts for a series of water depths, production capacities and environmental conditions, and is dedicated to make TLP an attrac-tive solution for even deeper waters.

We have the experience and tools to design and analyse the overall TLP, from hull and topsides to tendons and risers. The group also has got long experience in scaled model tests of TLP for all phases and components for a TLP, from installa-tion tests to in-place tests for hull and tethers.

In the last few years, Aker Solutions has assisted operating companies in TLP evaluations for West of Shetland, Aus-tralia, Malaysia as well as Norway.

HeidrunThe Heidrun field in the Norwegian Sea, at 350m water depth, has been producing oil and gas since October 1995. It was discovered in 1985 by ConocoPhillips, which served as op-erator for the exploration and devel-opment phase. Statoil is now the op-erator. A total of 76 wells are planned on the main field, including 51 pro-ducers, 24 water injectors and one gas injector. The north flank of Heid-run was brought on stream in August 2000.

The field has been developed with the worlds first concrete Tension Leg Plat-form (TLP), and represented a significant step forward in deepwater production technology. Aker Solutions began the de-velopment for ConocoPhillips began in 1991. The platform was installed in June 1995 and is now operated by Statoil.

Scope of work for Aker Solutions on the Heidrun TLP included engineering, procurement, construction and installation of foundations, tethers and TLP substruc-ture. Total weight of the structure is 287 800 tonnes.

Snorre ASpanning blocks 34/4 and 34/7 in the Tampen area of the Norwegian North Sea, the Snorre field, operated by Statoil has been producing oil and gas since August 1992. The Snorre development embraces two plat-forms, A and B.

For Snorre A, Aker Solutions delivered the detail design, topsides and tendon fabrica-tion, platform integration, design and man-ufacturing of the risers, as well as suction anchor construction and installation.

Snorre A is an integrated production, drilling and quarters (PDQ) unit. This ten-sion leg platform (TLP) is moored to the seabed by steel tethers. Stabilised oil and gas from Snorre A is piped to the nearby Statfjord A platform for final processing. The oil is then loaded into shuttle tankers, while the gas is transported on to conti-nental Europe through the Statpipe/Nor-pipe system.

Aker Solutions also delivered Snorre B, a semi-submersible production platform, in 2001, as a complete engineering, pro-curement and construction (EPC) con-tract.

  • Buoy concepts

Aker Solutions has a long history in development of buoy concepts. One of the current concepts, the Ten-tech Buoyform, saw its first con-ceptualisation in the mid 1970s as the Big Buoy.

The Buoyform concept is a concept without turret, with favourable motion characteristics, enclosed moonpool and a simple and cost effective fabrication. The floater is a conically shaped structure with significant damping characteristics that gives substantial improvement in motion response compared with other floaters and ship-shaped hulls. The solution has been extensively studied and tested, offers opportunity for si-multaneous drilling and produc-tion operations.

Another early buoy concept was the offloading buoy for the Draugen field. This design was delivered from Aker Solutions yard at Verdal, Norway, in 1995.

In the late 1990s, Aker Solutions was responsible for the delivery of Spar platforms for the Neptune, Genesis and Hoover/Diana develop-ments, from its facilities in Houston and Pori. This part of the organisation was divested in 2000, but key experience is still within the organisation.

Another concept that was initially con-ceived in the 1980s is the Condeep Monofloater. This concept has been further developed and tested in recent years, as particularly relevant for harsh environ-ments, thanks to the long term durability and ice load tolerance. The concrete con-struction additionally offers the potential for local construction also in remote locations.

The most recent buoy development has targeted arctic areas and ice loads. Mini-mising the ice load requires a narrow waterline with ice breaking features. The design has to be developed in interaction with ice load testing and several cam-paigns have been undertaken, in coopera-tion with operators of arctic developments.

Aker Solutions has in the period 2008-

Ice testing at Aker Solutions test facility Aker Arctic in Helsinki

    Tentech Buoyform concept (illustration).

2010 executed a joint industry project (JIP) with Statoil, Chevron, Shell, Exxon-Mobil and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where potential platform concepts have been tested in different drift ice conditions. Sev-eral moored buoy concepts have been tested and effect of different structure properties have been compared with respect to the measured response, moor-ing load and motions, of the buoys in dif-ferent ice conditions. The project has increased the understanding on how to design buoys for areas with drift ice and the results of the project will be used to further develop methods for estimation of ice induced mooring loads on floating platforms.
