AKHUWAT-E-RAMZAN2015

A K H U W AT- E - R A M Z A N

As the month of Ramadan is upon us, so is the news of increased prices on items of daily use. In particular, the prices for food items, arguably the most important thing for a whole month of fasting rise up and above the reach of the common man. Over the years this has become a major cause of worry, and the underprivileged have found it very demanding to maintain the religious ritual due to shortage of basic food items in their homes. The Akhuwat-e-Ramzan initiative was launched by Karwan Development Foundation (KDF) for this holy month of Ramadan. Being the first of its kind at KDF, the objective behind this project was to make this month of Ramadan more comfortable for the underprivileged Muslim families.

The Akhuwat-e-Ramzan by name implies living the brotherhood spirit in this holy month of Ramadan. This initiative has been responsible for distributing food packages containing necessary daily use food items to ensure the deserving have their suhoor and iftar carried out comfortably.

The Akhuwat-e-Ramzan was designed to sustain the recipients’ daily needs for a whole month, and not just for a portion of this month of fasting.

A single family package contained:1. Atta (20kg) 2. Sugar (10kg)3. Jame Shireen (2.25 Ltr)4. Basin (5kg) 5. Dates (3kg)6. Rice (5kg) 7. Cooking Oil (5kg)8. Tarung milk (Carton,125 ml) 9. Daal Channa (2.5kg) 10. Daal Moong (2.5kg)11. Tea (Chai) 0.5 kg

The initial target was identification of the needy families and as per the donations collected, by the Grace of the Almighty, a total of 108 families benefited from this project. KDF identified families in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan and Nowshehra as recipients of this Akhuwat-e-Ramzan. Criteria for identification of needy families was not very complicated and we looked upon orphans, widows, disabled personnel, patients and the extremely poor, as genuinely deserving of our help.

The identified families found it very difficult to make ends meet, and fasting was a big challenge for them without external aid. By the grace of the Almighty, and your noble gesture of donating to the cause, all the families are now seeing this month as a blessing and not a burden.

As part of the Akhuwat-e-Ramzan, each beneficiary of these packages was also provided transportation from collection points to their homes. No stone was left unturned in making each step as easy as possible for the deserving individuals and families. The management behind Akhuwat-e-Ramzan catered to every aspect of distribution of these food packages, for maximum benefits with least effort on part of the deserving families.

Karwan Development Foundation is extremely grateful to all of our donors to this Akhuwat-e-Ramzan. The major chunk of donations that being 75% was thanks to individual donors and the credit for the remaining 25% goes to Danish Muslim Aid. It is with the contributions of our friends that this idea got implemented and the lives touched for the better. May the Almighty accept all our efforts and we look forward to doing and even bigger Akhuwat-e-Ramzan in the next year.
