Virtual Learning Environment

“It‟s just like having your own teacher at home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!”

Over the past few years our school has invested heavily in providing quality online educational resources to help our students at home in term time as well as during the long summer holidays.

Here are some details of how to access these websites and a few tips on how to get the most out of them.

All children have their own personal logon details and password for this site,

which you must have in order to use it. If your child doesn’t then ask their teacher to get it for you.

As a parent you can sign up to receive weekly reports about your child’s

progress and achievements (have a look at the last page to see how to do this).

Since the beginning of the school year in September 2009 the pupils in the

Primary School have correctly answered an amazing 6.2 million questions on the Mathletics website. Of this total 4.4 million have been on the Live

Mathletics part of the site and 1.8 million on curriculum questions.

Live Mathletics Levels

Live Mathletics works best when students compete

at the right level for them.

In order to help facilitate this, teachers can set the

minimum level that each student can play on.

If your child is scoring more than 20 at a

particular level then encourage them to

play a higher level and perhaps ask their

teacher to block the lower levels.

Although they might enjoy the success, it is a

waste of their time scoring lots of points on a level

that they have already mastered!

Live Mathletics

What type of questions are at each

LEVEL?

On the Live Mathletics part of the website pupils get the

chance to challenge other students from all over the world by

answering questions in a 60 second game.

Dice and card games are a fantastic way to sharpen

your Rapid Recall skills. Check out the back page for a

list of possible games.

Practice - Curriculum Questions

On the main part of the website students have the chance

to practice questions on topics they have covered in class.

This can also be used to revisit other parts of the

curriculum and help to keep skills ticking over.

Click on the to look at an example of the

method that should be used to solve the problem.

Your child will get the best

results from Mathletics if they

use it regularly and for short

periods of time - about 20

minutes per session, 3 times a

week.

Other parts of the Mathletics website

Another fantastic feature available on the website is the ‘Problem Solving’ section.

Rainforest Maths and Spellodrome can also be accessed from Mathletics. Pupils use the

same passwords for Spellodrome as they use for Mathletics.

Spellodrome

This site was created by the same company that runs Mathletics. It can be accessed via

Mathletics or by going directly to www.spellodrome.com Remember, pupils use the same

passwords that they use for Mathletics.

With the right balance of stimulation

and support this website helps

develop independent learning and

improve spelling and sentence

structure.

The site is continually developing

and will soon contain more

grammar based activities - perfect

for students with English as a

second language.

This is a fantastic Maths website that provides

online lessons, games and worksheets (that are

marked online).

Go to www.mymaths.co.uk and login using the

school passwords akips and circle.

Some students have also got their own extra

passwords that allow their teacher to keep track of

what they have done.

Don’t worry if your child doesn’t have one - they can

still access and use the entire website with just the

school passwords.

The curriculum is split up into these categories.

Choose a level that is at, or perhaps one

above, the level that your child is currently

working at. You will get your child’s current

Teacher Assessed level from the end of year

school report.

Use the ‘Talk to me’ option

to have the lesson read to

you.

Booster Packs - this is one of

the best features on the website.

The packs contain all the lessons,

games and practice worksheets

your child needs to help them move up to

the next level.

The screenshot below shows a typical lesson.

The school has recently added this award winning

site to it’s elearning

platform.

The passwords you

need to access the

site are:

Username: alk025

Password: 22166

Just click on „Sign In‟ and type in the

passwords on the left.

GridClub has over 500 activities linked to the curriculum. It is designed for ages 5-12. It

is one of the most popular educational websites because of it’s innovative design and fun

approach to learning.

Please do not share these passwords - or put them on a website - as they are only

licensed to be used by pupils at Al Khor International School.

A very enjoyable and easy way to help sharpen your mental maths skills. You can make your own cards and buy some dice, 6 sided ones are fine, you just have to be more inventive! Below are some suggestions for activities but you

could always make up your own games. Level 1 games:

Roll one dice or pick one card and call out the number you need to add to

it to make 10. Roll one dice or pick one card and call out double the number.

Roll two dice or pick two cards and call out the difference between the two numbers.

Roll two dice or pick two cards and add them together.

Level 2 games: Roll one dice or pick one card and call out the number you

need to add to it to make 20.

Roll two dice or pick two cards, add them together then double the

number. Roll one dice or pick one card and multiply the number by 5.

Roll one dice or pick one card and multiply the number by 10. Roll one dice or pick one card, multiply the number by 10 and then call

out the number you need to add to get to 100.

Level 3 games: Roll one dice or pick one card and multiply the number by 7, 8 or 9.

You could combine several games together. For example:

Pick 2 cards - add them together - double the answer - then

times this by 8
