In this module I aim to create a substantial body of work tying in my own personal interests with a focus on the subject area that I would like to spe-cialist in, that being design for the creative sector/design for music. This being my chosen subject area because of the creative freedom that comes with it, allowing me to produce some really experimental outcomes not tied down to co-orporate limitations. Each brief should be mainly type driven, with the opportunity to produce some form of editorial design within the outcomes, how-ever due to the amount of book work and layout i took on last year. However still working on a substantial amount of of maga-zine/book work briefs to fully develop my type and layout skills. I also need to try to incorporate some of my illustration skills within some of the briefs so i does not just become a skill that i have spent the past few years developing and to now just scrap it. I also would like to choose briefs that i have a personal interest in, a few problems that i faced in previous years was being 100% interested in a brief/ the subject matter, which lead to me producing sloppy outcomes because i could not get fully involved within the brief. If i choose briefs on subject matters that i have a personal interest in it ensure that I will become more focused on the brief and hopefully the design work will improve because of this. The briefs that i choose also have to have room for creative freedom, try not to produce design work that is too commercial this would be to help fill my portfolio with work that i would like to produce after uni, also with creative free-dom gives the opportunity to try something different, be slightly experi-mental/abstract with processes to produce some really nice unique work.

Codebreaker:

Brief 1

-

Substancial Brief

Codebreaker is an exhibition developed by the Science Museum to cel-ebrate the centenary of the birth of this pioneering British figure. They are looking for designers to create the visual aesthetic for this exhibition as well as all over design collateral to go along side it. The exhibition is looking for branding and a visual identity which best reflects the exhibition as a whole, as well as a huge range of deliverables looking for publications about Alan Turing and the development of coding over the years.Making sure the design works is suitable for a wide range as possible which trying to be as innivotive as possible, trying to apply techniques that are reflectiive of the codebreaker exhibition.

Be very conceptual with the subject, not being obvious. Be cause it is about code, using subtle visual referances.

Trying to use approaches to design that reflect the exhibition as a whole, pushing the boundaries of the design software, trying to use sripts and coding.

Using imagery from the exhibiton for design work; binary, wires, chips, micro stuff, scriptographer. Combine traditional with modern design, showing change in technology, computing and coding and maybe applying a change of design stlyes and trends within design. computing and coding throughout the years.

Using the research we souce for the exhibition as well all the information for the exhibition produce a book/publication for sale at the exhibition as well as the exhibition design collaterol.

Codebreaker: Codebreaker is an exhibition developed by the Sci-ence Museum to celebrate the centenary of the birth of this pioneering British figure.

Alan Turing is most widely known for his critical in-volvement in the codebreaking at Bletchley Park during the Second World War. But the British math-ematician was also a philosopher and computing pioneer who grappled with the fundamental prob-lems of life itself. His ideas have helped shape the modern world, including early computer program-ming and even the seeds of artificial intelligence.

At the heart of the exhibition is the Pilot ACE com-puter. It is the most significant surviving Turing ar-tefact in existence.

Together with interactive exhibits, personal recol-lections and a wealth of historic imagery, the ex-hibition offers an absorbing retrospective view of one of Britain’s greatest twentieth-century thinkers.

Design a range of wallpaper designs making use of the vast print pro-cesses available at university. Also create and brand a company and store, with all other stationary and graphic design collateral to go with it that could sell these wallpaper designs. Produce promotional material and web designs for the company also.

Deliverables

- A range of wallpaper design- Packaging- Branding for a company- Promotional material- Stationary- Website

Put forward a proposal for a new night at The Garage, a small club in Leeds thatrecently won the title of ‘Britain’s best small club’. They are currently holding acompetition inviting people to pitch an idea for a new club night.

Background / Considerations

The Garage is one of the newest small clubs in Leeds, and within a year or soended up becoming the best small club in Britain according to DJMag, which isa pretty impressive achievement. The competition invites poten-tials to pitch anidea for a night that takes an innovative and fresh approach as an alternative tothe seemingly house-saturated scene that dominates many clubs in Leeds atthe moment. There is certainly room for a few al-ternative sorts of nights to startup and The Garage is perhaps one of the best venues for this.

Mandatory Requirements

The night must have a unique selling pointwhich sets it apart from the current trend ofnights in Leeds, particu-larly in terms of thegenres chosen. The design aesthetic mustappeal to those seeking alternative forms ofentertain-ment in the forms of elec-tronic music, and the promo-tion should also be reflective of this.

Deliverables

- Business model (infor-mation providedby col-laborator)- Mission statement- Promotional materials (print & web)- Identity Design- Presentaion - Way finding- Night collaterol- Stationary

Substantial brief

15

The artist Bambooman is an up and coming produced who creates hip-hop, downtempo, futurebeats music. Develop visuals for the marketing of a release by this artist. I plan to put together a visual identity for this producer along with design material to go along side his new album ‘lost souls’, also individual artwork for the singles EP’s making sure the artwork adheres to a range of sizes aka vinyl, cd, etc.. along with special edition alternative high class album design and promotional material to run along side. Background/considerations.

Remember artwork and identity is to reflect to overall feel of the music so must fit the purpose that it is intended for, however the experimental feel of the music should give you enough creative freedom to create some-thing really nice. Must stand out amongst other artwork, help promote the artist and bring sales in.

Mandatory requirements

Include alternative special edition artwork.Adhere to the bands guide-lines

Deliverables

- identity- new logo- website mock up- album artwork along with, vinyl covers and special edition album art.- EP artwork

A timeline of theories articulating the changes in design in relation to the processes

Brief

Produce a book that articulates futurism through the cycle of modernist to post modernist subtly in the form of a gradual timeline.

Background/considerations

Aim to tie in all aspects of theories and past future predictions that have come to light in today’s world of design. Illustrate this through the chang-es in graphic design through the timeline, essentially splitting the timeline into two – one being the theories, and the other being the layout and design of the book being dictated by these theories. Make subtle shifts in the design of the book that steadily moves through the transformations of thinking at that time. Think about technologies influence on print pro-cesses and design.

Mandatory requirements

- A range of printing processes- Essays, journals and ideas that relate to our subject matter- Past and present interviews from designers- Personal views and predictions- Extracts from own dissertations

Deliverables

- Book
