U.S. Register of Copyrights Maria Pallante recently said that, “The issues of authors are intertwined with the interests of the public. As the first beneficiaries of the copyright law, they are not a counterweight to the public interest but instead are at the very center of the equation.” That is because the ultimate aim of intellectual property laws is to provide protection to creators in order to stimulate creation and dissemination of works for the benefit of the public. From the moment we first express an idea to the moment the public accesses our work, we invest large amounts of time, talent and resources to create and make our work available. It is because of legal protections such as copyright that it is possible to earn a living and support our families through the professional pursuit of our creative passions. And because we rely on expression, we often find ourselves on the front lines protecting freedom of expression for all. We agree that ensuring public access to knowledge is important. Legal protections for works of authorship ensure that there is knowledge available for the public to access in the first place. Together, we need to continue to work to ensure fair compensation for authors and creators of all disciplines so we can keep producing high quality work, and disseminate it to the public.
