AL IZHAR YOUTH COMMUNITY SERVICE AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT AIMING TO SAVE THE PROTECTED AREA
IN MT. HALIMUN, WEST JAVA

Background
The project is based on the awareness of wildlife poaching, erosion, landslides, expanding agricultural areas in Mt Halimun National Park, West Java so the students and the teachers are thinking about to do an ecological restoration by planting economically and ethno botanically significant native species: the hardwood Puspa Tree (Schima wallichii), Aren Palm (Arenga pinnata), Pasang Tree (Quercus sp) and Rasamala tree (Altingia excels), and Community Empowerment around the National Park Project Objectives

Project Implementation The students has planted 400 seeds of hardwood trees consist of: 100 pcs of Puspa Trees (Schima wallichii), 100 pcs of Aren Palms (Arenga pinnata), 100 pcs of Pasang Trees (Quercus sp), 100 pcs of Rasamala Trees (Altingia excels) Before the planting day, students must have to live in local villager’s house so they have some social interaction and internalization with their host parent in the village. They also make some research and data collecting about forest’s diversity accompanied by some local villagers as the source. Finally they have to do some activities as a teacher in the local school. Budget
Impacts of the Project
1) By planting economically trees: the hardwood Puspa Tree (Schima wallichii), Aren Palm (Arenga pinnata), Pasang Tree (Quercus sp) and Rasamala tree (Altingia excels), the villager that lived on that area will taking care the plants for their advantage and keep the forest from exploitation.
2) By planting those trees, it will keep the rainforest’s function to be alive and healthy by preventing erosion, landslides, flood, soil infertility and the loss of precious biodiversity; as a significant oxygen producer and absorbs carbon effectively, so it will help to decrease Global Warming’s effects.
