Board of Director’s Message We hope you have all had a relaxed and enjoyable summer
break and would like to take this opportunity to welcome the
new staff, students and families who have joined us this
academic year. This is a special academic year as ABA is
celebrating its 30th year in Oman.
This year the Board comprises of:
The Board spent last Saturday away at an Annual Board
Retreat. In the morning of the retreat, the Board reviewed the
enrolment, exam results, organogram and the financial status.
It also reviewed last year’s Board Objectives. We are happy to
inform you that our students excelled academically in both the
IB and IGCSE exams.
In the afternoon, the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), comprising
Diana Malik, Simon Walker, Michael Berry, John Savage and
Bahul Pillai, joined the retreat. The Superintendent presented
his strategic intent and his draft performance plan. This was
reviewed and discussed along with the Board’s own objectives.
The Board will achieve its objectives through the work of its three Committees, namely:
Strategic Development Committee (SDC)
Policy and Planning Committee (PPC)
Finance Committee (FC)
The Board Objectives set out this year are:
Update the strategic plan for the next 5
years.
To update and oversee the school policy
manual.
Review the operational and long term
financial health of the school.
Oversee the road map for technology,
athletics and languages in line with the
feedback/results.

Superintendent’s Message
Our School
Our present Mission, Vision and Values have
guided the school with little change in the recent
past. As part of the accreditation process, and as
good practice, we review these guiding
statements every so often to determine if they
still represent what we do and what we aspire to
achieve. A process was begun last year during
which students, staff and parents were able to
contribute to the discussion on what statements
might be most suitable for ABA in the future. A
committee gave time to collating the feedback
and based on this input, created a draft Mission,
Vision and Values. In May, parents were asked to
give their thoughts on the draft in comparison to
the present statements.
After consideration of the results the Board
agreed that they did not have a sufficient
mandate for change. While many expressed
favourable comments about the draft, others felt
that the current Mission, Vision and Values had
served the school well and were still relevant and
strong.
I would like to thank all members of our
community for contributing to the process of
review. A special thanks goes to members of the
committee for all the time they gave to this work.
ABA will continue to work towards meeting our
Mission, Vision and Values.
Academic achievements After a nervous couple of months since they took IB Diploma exams, students in Grade 12 received their
results in July. I am delighted to inform you that in both the IB Diploma and IGCSE exams the results
show an upward trend. In the Diploma, the results were as follows.

I will present more information on the results at the first Superintendent’s Forum in September. For students in Grade 10, who sat IGCSE exams in May and June, the wait was even longer. However,
when the results were published this month, they too were pleasing and, once again, higher than last

Sport and MESAC News
It has been a positive start
to the year with 85 students
turning up for MESAC
season one (volleyball,
swimming and academic
games) tryouts. There was
a real buzz and a positive
vibe amongst all the
students.
This week the students
trying out for any MESAC
event (season one –three)
were given a booklet with
the requirements for
participation in the ABA
MESAC program. We ask
that you please sit with your
child and go through the
expectations.
All season one students need to return these forms to their coach. Season two and three participants need
to return the forms to Abi Wilson.
Swim Club tryouts happened from Sunday 21st- Tuesday 23rd. There was also a great turn out. Parents
will hear from the swim club whether your child has been successful in the near future. Training starts for
the swim club on Sunday August 28th.
Next week Grades 6,7 and 8 students begin their sporting journey. Training will be every Monday and
Thursday from 2:30pm-3:30pm for Gr6 & 7 and 3:30pm – 4:30pm for Gr 8. It is still very hot so we are

Message from the Primary School Principal
This past week the elementary teachers began
their grade level parent orientation
presentation. The purpose of these meetings is
to provide the parents with important information
regarding their child’s academic, social and
emotional development for the year. We feel
that clear and consistent communication between
the school and home is essential for student
success. These meetings are one way we try to
keep parents informed, promoting positive
school-home communication.
Listed below are just a few ways parents can help
their child’s teacher.
Share with the teacher any pertinent
academic, social or emotional information
regarding your child
Read all correspondences that come home
If you are confused or have questions
regarding the teaching and learning of
your child, please ask your child’s teacher
to clarify the information immediately
Ensure your child has a healthy snack and
enough food to get through the day
Ask for ways to become more involved
with your child’s learning
We would also encourage all parents to update
their contact details through the parent portal if
you have not done so already. This information
is vital for all school personnel to contact
families. For registration details please
email: [email protected]
On another note, should any parent be interested
in working as a learning assistant for children in a
1:1 setting, please contact me at
Michael Berry
Message from the Middle School
Welcome back to all returning parents and a
special welcome to all new families to ABA. The
first few days of the school year were filled with
excitement and stories from the summer. We are
hoping that your son or daughter has a great
year filled with opportunities to grow
academically, socially and emotionally.
As in previous years, we will be hosting a number
of coffee mornings and evenings to further
develop communication and understanding
between home and school. Please check your
email regularly for invitations for these
workshops. The first event of the year will be a
coffee morning for grade six parents. The
purpose of the presentation is to provide an
overview of the transition into middle school.
Grade six parents will receive an invitation soon.
Meet the Teacher
Please join the middle school staff on Tuesday, September 6 for our Meet the Teacher evening. The
evening will begin at 5:30 in your child’s advisory room and then you will proceed to the gym to meet the
remaining teachers. Further information will be sent in the near future. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
In an exciting development for this academic
year, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be part of
the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.
According to the ABA BYOD programme, students
are required to bring a laptop to school and
register it to access the ABA WiFi. It is an
expectation that all students in grades 7 and 8
bring a device to school (fully charged) to fully
benefit from our programme.
This week as part of the Omantel, HP and
Microsoft pilot program, students in Grade 6
received their HP X2 hybrid laptop with
touchscreen technology generating much
excitement. Students are expected to bring this
device into school every day fully charged and
ensure the laptop is carried in a protective sleeve
or padded bag. Over the forthcoming weeks,
students will be introduced to the safe use of this
device, its features and applications to support
their learning. We look forward to using this
technology to enhance teaching and learning.
John Savage- Middle School Principal
Weaving the MYP
Three ideals of the MYP should appeal to any parent wishing the best for their child. These ideals are
holistic learning, principled action and intercultural understanding. Embodied in the IB Learner Profile as
balanced, principled and open-minded, your child on a daily basis, benefits from this interwoven approach
to education.
The first strand is,
through holistic learning
we provide a curriculum
that is wide ranging, so
your child can engage in
Humanities and Sciences
as well as the Arts,
Design and Physical
Education. While our
focus in the MYP is to
develop deep conceptual
understanding, we also
believe that a healthy
mind in a healthy body is actually the ideal.
Encourage your child to participate not only in PE
but also in after school activities; this is even
more critical as they become older and take on
more challenging examinations.
The second strand that makes our curriculum
distinct is its resolute focus on the value of
service, but even more importantly that it should
specifically emanate from classroom activities.
Through detailed planning, our teachers, seek
opportunities to link the classroom lessons to real
life challenges and through Service as Action
principled action is promoted. Action that is
aimed at improving the local and global space we
occupy, action that promotes a proactive
approach to the problems we identify through
study and action
that recognizes
that real change
starts from
within.
The final thread is the acceptance that as global citizens, we recognize
and promote the strengths of the culturally diverse community we
inhabit. The variety of languages, cultures and religions that are
interacted with on a daily basis is incredible. Our students through the
MYP appreciate these differences and understand that we are part of a
common humanity that depends on all respecting each other. Our
community demonstrates open-mindedness, by becoming aware that we
not only differ by flags, fashion, and food but also through notions of
time, respect, personal space among others. It is this mindfulness that weaves the ABA fabric together to
produce the current welcoming climate we are so proud of.
Your support is crucial to the success of the MYP and your feedback on how we develop it further is
constantly sought. For those who are experienced ABA parents, please feel free to drop in and speak with
me about how we can improve this fantastic programme further.
For the new parents to ABA and particularly to the IB MYP, there will be an MYP Introduction
Workshop on September 20, 2016.

Message from the High School Principal
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you
and your family to the ABA High School. We will
do our best to assist you and your children to
enjoy a productive start to the academic year,
and make the most of this educational
opportunity. As can be seen from our Mission,
Vision and Values, ABA students and their
learning is the focus of our efforts.
Over the course of the week, I have had the
pleasure of meeting a number of you at the High
School coffee mornings. The focus of these
sessions was to introduce myself as the incoming
High School Principal, Mr Essex who is the
incoming Assistant Principal/ IBDP Coordinator
and the Counsellors, Mrs Keys (College
Counsellor), Mrs Anthony (Social and Emotional
Grades 9) and Mrs Knapton (Social and Emotional
Grades 10-12).
Most of the coffee morning sessions were spent
reflecting upon work by Professor Carol Dweck
from Stanford University. Her research has
identified a strong relationship between a growth
mindset and student achievement. Last week I
shared some of her ideas with High School
students at the first assembly of the academic
year. During Grades 9-12, students come under a
great deal of pressure to be successful in formal
examinations and at times find it a challenge to
maintain a growth mindset (state of mind where
we embrace challenge, persist when experiencing
setbacks and value effort/ practice). For those
unable to attend the coffee morning you might
like to read an article from the Scientific America
that can be accessed from:
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-
secret-to-raising-smart-kids1/.
Gentle reminders and dates for diaries
ABA grades 9-12 meet the teacher event on Tuesday 30 August, 5:30- 7:00pm in the gym (this is
an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and ask about the programme for the year)
Where necessary, please reinforce the dress code with your child as we would prefer to focus time
and conversations upon learning
IB Diploma students are expected to be in school throughout the day to support their learning

Message from the School Counseling Department
Elementary School Counselor
I hope that you are all settling into ‘school life’ as
we end our first full week of classes here at ABA.
It has been great meeting with the children this
week and hearing all about their summer
adventures.
I am excited to continue this year as another link
in the relationship (child, parent and school)
whose main purpose is to support your child in
achieving their maximum potential. As you are
getting over jet lag and settling back into school
it is important to start establishing routines that
help children be prepared for each day. Some
things that parents can do to promote school
success are:
Read and model reading as often as
possible. Ask questions about what they
are reading. Find books to share.
Play! Play! Play! Play is the work of
children, helping them to make sense of
and understand themselves, others and
the world around them.
Communicate with school. Let your child’s
teacher know if you have any concerns.
Refrain from speaking negatively about
school in front of your child.
Support your child with their homework-
provide a space and set a time. Encourage
them to take pride in what they do.
Review what they have completed to show
your interest.
Encourage responsibility and
independence. Support your child in
becoming independent in preparing for
school the next day. Set age appropriate
responsibilities at home
Establish routines for night and morning.
Ensure lots of sleep. Be prepared for each
morning.
Set technology limits. Limit time on
devices. Limit access to games or sites
that are not age appropriate.
Try to find a balance – life gets very busy.
Please ensure that your child has time for
school work, activities, family time and
PLAY!
Please contact me on [email protected] if you have any questions or there is anything I can help
you with. My office is located near the Grade 4 Area (opposite Mr. Derrick, Asst. Principal). I look forward
to getting to know and support you and your children this year.
Colette O’Driscoll- Elementary Counselor
The start of a new school year is different for
every student on campus. Many students cope
with changes in teachers and classmates with
relative ease, yet for others it is can be a difficult
and anxious time. At ABA we have a strong
programme in place to assist all students at this
time of year. Middle School Advisors are working
through day to day issues as well as getting to
know your child and understand them as an
individual. Every new student is assigned a
buddy who is invaluable to them in and around
campus, making new friends and answering
numerous questions about ABA. In addition, new
students will be invited to attend a group
meeting with me and other new students in their
year group. The purpose of this meeting is to
ensure that each student is settling into this
unfamiliar environment and that they know who
they can go to for help and advice. As you know your child best, if you feel that they
are not settling at school as you would expect
and continue to find the transition process
difficult, please contact me-

Message for the Community
After School Mother Language Program Welcome back to the 6th year of our Mother
Language Program at ABA and a warm welcome
to all new students and families. The Mother Language Program is an after school
language program which is coordinated and paid
for by parents. The classes are taught by native
speaking teachers from the community. At present we have students studying four
languages in their mother tongue. A big thank you to all parents, teachers and
coordinators for their initiative and support of the
program. We hope in our 6th year to see the
program continue to grow and flourish. We are currently looking for a parent mother
language coordinator to act as a link between the
parents, teachers and ABA. We are also looking for a qualified Spanish
teacher to take over from Maripaz who will be
leaving Oman shortly. Once registration is open we often have interest
in other languages starting up or being
reintroduced to the Program. If you are interested in any of these positions or
just wish to find out more about the roles please
do not hesitate to get in touch with
Dorothy Vis ([email protected]) EAL/Mother Language coordinator For more information regarding the After School Mother Language Program please visit https://sites.google.com/a/abaoman.org/mother-language-program-oman/ Registration is now open Please visit our site to register your child and to read our guidelines.

Dear ABA community,
As you know, we will have our first cohort of DP Business Management graduating this year. Their
culminating assessment must be a primary research of a real organisation with a real decision or issue
under consideration. Students are required to use the business management theories to analyse an issue
and provide recommendations to an organisation.
There are 22 students who take Business Management and it is going to be difficult for every student to
find placement with businesses in Oman. If you have a chance to take a student into your organisation
and help them complete the project, this could help these ABA student have better results.
If you wish to have more information or offer a place to a student, please contact Ruslan Shaymardanov
Thank you.
