FAIRHOPE, AL
Nick
“I originally narrowed my
choices for college to three
SEC schools, but The University
of Alabama simply offered the
best opportunities. I’m planning
on going to law school, and my
involvement in Honors College is
helping me reach that goal. The
UA Law School’s accelerated
JD/MBA program was also a
factor in me choosing UA. The
opportunity to earn two high-
caliber degrees at the same time
was extremely appealing.”

“The University of Alabama
gives students the best possible
education for the cost of tuition.
UA can give you innumerable
opportunities to learn, research,
travel and lead while still having
professors that know your name
and speak to you when they
pass you on the Quad. Take
some classes that interest you
along with your required classes;
I am taking ballroom dancing
and love it! Most of all, say yes
to opportunities that you are
given. Your best memories will
be made doing things that you
wouldn’t normally do, not sitting
in your dorm room watching
TV.”

The Undergraduate Catalog is the
place to find degree requirements
for all of UA’s curriculum
programs. Many degree programs
also include a four-year plan of
study in the college’s designated
section of the Undergraduate
Catalog. These plans give students
a path to “Finish in Four.” Using
DegreeWorks, a web-based
degree audit tool, students can
track their progress toward
degree completion. DegreeWorks
also allows students, with their
advisers, to plan future semesters
and stay on track for completing
a degree in four years or eight
semesters.

What about financial aid?
financialaid.ua.edu
Student Financial Aid provides assistance with the processing of federal
funding, which includes Federal Pell Grant, Supplemental Education
Opportunity Grant, Work Study and loans for students and parents.
Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) at fafsa.gov each year to receive any federal financial aid.
This yearly budget is a reasonable estimate. For the most up-to-date
information, visit studentaccounts.ua.edu/cost.
The University offers the option to pay in full or to pay through
participation in a payment plan.
Payment by payment plan requires the student or authorized user
to sign up each term. The plan features four monthly payments
for the Fall and Spring terms (late enrollment may reduce the
number of payments available) based on actual charges. Two
payments are offered for the Summer term. The plan payments
may increase or decrease if a student makes changes to their
schedule. Students or authorized users may elect to save a payment
profile and have payments made automatically on their due date.
Late fees may apply if payments are not made in a timely manner.

HOUSING
On-campus living puts you at the
heart of the University, with different
residence halls to suit different
personalities and needs. Here, you’ll
meet a diverse group of students
and create a network of friends and
classmates within your residence
hall community. Resident advisers
(RAs) and freshman advisers (FAs)
will assist you as you transition to
the University and to living away
from home. We encourage you to
become an active participant in your
new living community and to take
advantage of the exciting campus
life at the Capstone.
UA
housing.ua.edu
APPLYING FOR HOUSING
You can complete the online housing application at
housing.ua.edu after you are admitted to the University and
have paid the freshman enrollment deposit. Students who
complete their housing application by FEB. 1 will be eligible
to participate in Freshman Room Selection. Students are
encouraged to apply as soon as they are able in order to
maximize their housing choices. Students with a medical
need requiring special accommodations should submit
a Medical Accommodation Report Form to Housing and
Residential Communities by MARCH 1.
FRESHMAN RESIDENCY PROGRAM
At UA, we are committed to providing our students with
a comprehensive educational experience. In recognition
of the value of a blended academic and residency
experience associated with on-campus living, all first-
year undergraduate students are required to live in
campus residence halls, unless otherwise exempt from this
requirement. Students who will live in the primary residence
of a parent or guardian may be exempt from the freshman
residency program. Additional information regarding the
Freshman Residency Program and the exemption process
can be found at housing.ua.edu, under “New Students.”
HOUSING OPTIONSThe housing assignment process is based on date of
housing application. In order to maximize your options, and
maybe choose your own room, you will want to apply for
housing as soon as possible after admission.
As you consider your on-campus options, here are some
factors to consider:
• Do you want a single-gender or co-ed hall?
• Are you interested in a living-learning community in which your residence hall is tied to your college or academic interest?
• Do you have a preferred roommate?
• Which location do you prefer?
• Which option fits your family’s budget?
Be sure to talk to your family and potential roommates
about your housing preferences.
A GUIDE FOR ALABAMA STUDENTS 2 5

As part of the living-learning experience, UA requires freshmen
to participate in the First Year Experience Meal Plan. On-campus
dining has many educational, social and dietary benefits. Studies
of college students across the nation show that students who eat
and live on campus are more involved, have higher grade point
averages and are more likely to graduate than students living at
home or off campus.
MEAL PLANSUA students can use meal plans at three all-you-care-to-eat food
service locations around campus—Burke Dining Hall, Lakeside
Dining Hall and the Fresh Food Company. All meal plans also can
be used for brunch at Bryant Dining in Bryant Hall.

“I always knew I wanted to come
to The University of Alabama,
and it has been the best decision
for me. I’ve enjoyed being a
part of the Capstone Men and
Women, the University’s official
ambassadors, which has allowed
me to meet so many different
people. I’ve been amazed by all
the opportunities available here at
UA. I know I am receiving a world-
class education at one of the most
beautiful campuses anywhere in
the country. And I’m still only an
hour from home.”
