Letter From The President

It is with great pleasure that I can reportto you of the complete turn-around of ALACfrom a deficit at the time this administrationtook office, to a projected modest profit forthe fiscal year which will end June 30, 1931.Credit for this rests, for the most part, withmany of your board members and committee mem-bers who have given us the benefit of theirvalued council and so much of their time. Ithank each and every one of you for your muchappreciated support.

Membership is up 327 from mid August to midFebruary. Plans for the forthcoming NATIONAL SPECIALTY are progressing very well with noapparent unresolved problems to date. The saleof the CH/CD books, although not quite up toour best hopes, nevertheless has been a reward-ing accomplishment accounting for revenues ofone thousand dollars, a factor which made asignificant contribution towards ALM:IS fin-ancial recovery. Wa must not become complacentabout the sale of these books! We made thepoint in the last bulletin that the CH/CD bookwas our finest asset. Proof is the fact thatthe revenues from the sales of those volumes, over only the past few months, have made sucha positive impact on our cash position. Wecannot stress enough how important it is thateach of you continue with your efforts to sellthis inventory. Please remember that every booksold is one more step towards the publicationof the biggest and best volume to date.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT-CONTINUED

As some of you already know, I will not be run-ning for the presidency of ALAC next year. Iwould like to thank each of you for having givenme the opportunity to serve and to tell you thatI have thoroughly enjoyed being your president. The reason I made the decision not to run wasvery simple. ALAC needs more representation ofthe board from other geographical areas of thecountry. Such would help enormously to spurcommunication between representatives of localclubs and ALAC t S board; there is no better officefrom which to impart the required confidence tothe overall membership and to create the necess-ary atmosphere of national unity than that ofthe president. Like the NATIONAL SPECIALTY,this office must rove also.

Respectfully submitted,Leonard RipleyPresident

SECRETARY'S LETTER

Each time the secretary has sent out a ballot

she has had indications that the way the ballot-

ing is handled is invading the privacy of a

member's vote.

According to the American Lhasa Apso Club, Inc.

constitution, the only "secret ballot" sent to

the membership is the final ballot for election

of officers.

On every ballot return envelope there must be a

name to match the eligible voters roster, or the

ballot is invalid.

The procedure is as follows: A committee checks

off each name, envelopes are then opened and the

ballots are put in one pile, envelopes in an-

other. The committee then counts the votes.

If a member feels that his ballot should be

placed in an unmarked, sealed envelope, then

please put the unmarked envelope inside the

return envelope that has your name on it.

Ann Lanterman

AMERICAN DOG OWNERS' MINI-SEMINAR

March 1980 - Pittsburgh, Pa.

Bill Davis Deck represented Action 81, an

organization of citizens to combat the stealing

of pets, formed in 1976 by Mary Warner follow-

ing the disappearance of her German Shepherd.

Bill spoke on PET-NAPPING and/or DOG NAPPING.

Pets are stolen mainly to fill the following

needs:1) to use as BAIT to train Dog

Fighters2) for use in RESEARCH

3) fill orders for PUPPY MILLS andBACKYARD BREEDERS

4) for use by FURRIERS

To train one dog for FIGHTING takes several

weeks and FIFTY DOGS and CATS PER WEEK,and

progressing to large docile dogs.

Since the repeal of the Metcalf-Hatch in N.Y.

State, laboratories have no source of supply

for research animals. Many other states are in

the same predicament. Healthy pure-breds bring

from $50. to $700.!!!!

Stolen pure-bred bitches, are on order for the

Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders. They do like

dogs with show records.

Furriers are now using pelts of certain breeds,

smooth-coated such as Dobermans and Dachshunds,

long-coated such as Irish Setters and Longhaired

Dachshunds; these are mostly used for trim.

AMERICAN DOG OWNERS-CONTINUED

Cat fur is used for rabbit fur as it is diff-

icult to tell the difference between the two

by an untrained eye.

Protect your pet and follow some simple advice:

1) TATTOO your dog with your Social Security

# on the inside of the left leg.(Reputable labcratories look for #s.)

2) Register your S.S.# with the National Dog

Registry in Carmel, N.Y. (One time reg-

istration fee)3) Never leave your dog unattended in cars,

yards, runs, tied outside of stores, etc.

4) Invest $10.00 and join the American Dog

Owners Association, Inc., 1920 Route 9,Castleton, N.Y. 12033.

THE PET YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN!!!!

THE KIDNEY PROBLEM - HAS IT VANISHED?

It has been brought to my attention recently

that many of our members are concerned about

the status of investigation into the kidney

problem. Is it still a problem in our breed

and where is it being found? Is research still

being conducted with our Lhasas and do the Vet

schools want our help?

ALAC is concerned and we want to know if our

members have any news to contribute. We are

re-establishing contact with the Veterinarians

who were originally involved and we will have

some specific news on that front soon. We hope

to have for you the latest on what the Univer-

sities want in the way of Lhasa Colonies and

case histories.

I have a personal observation on the situation

to share with you. I live in an area of the

Country where we have many people stationed

here for the short periods in the military and

where we have many tourists (Norfolk, Virginia

Beach, Williamsburg, etc). Our local Vets see

Lhasas from all over, mostly pets, and are ob-

serving many cases of Kidney problems. During

the past year I started to inquire of my Vet

and some of the other Vets around what is being

done with these dogs. I left my phone number

with the Vets and have had owners call to tell

me their stories. A majority of the dogs come

from a pet store background and are already

very ill when they are brought in. In most of

the cases the owners were afraid to spend a lot

of money on tests when the dogs were so sick.

At present all that I can do is listen and

encourage the people to cooperate with their

own Veterinarian on the testing and discourage

them from breeding. Pet owners need to know

that we are aware of the problem. our Veter-

inarians need to have our support. Let them

know that we are interested. Even if we just

help find out how many Lhasas are out there

with Kidney dysfunction it is a start.
