Traffic enforcement is a priority in the city of Hawthorne. Numerous violations are observed and enforced each week. The school zone at the 21500 block of SE SR 20 is enforced regularly and multiple violations are always observed. During the “Click it or Ticket” detail, over 300 traffic citations were issued within the city limits by the participating deputies. While enforcing the traffic laws in this area, there are always multiple arrests made for criminal traffic violations such as DWLSR and persons having active warrants from Alachua and surrounding counties. Several citations that have been issued were for driving 30mph or more over the posted speed limits.

GAINESVILLE/ALACHUA COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE

Currently, the Task Force has on-going investigations in the area. We urge citizens to report narcotics activity to our drug tip line (374-1849) or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 372-STOP.

Drug Task Force investigated three cases and made five arrests or sworn complaints.

In 2011 there were 26 narcotics cases handled by Patrol Deputies within the City of Hawthorne. The map at right shows locations of drug arrests.

4/21/2011 ACSO CR 11-3867: Burglary, Battery, False Imprisonment (Follow-up). D/S A. Rarey, J. Reynolds, D. Brown, and Trainee W. Chason conducted a follow-up to the case that was generated on 4-21-11. The suspect, a 37 YOA W/M traveled to the victim’s home while intoxicated and demanded to be allowed in. The victim allowed the suspect into the residence where he proceeded to physically push her against a wall. During the altercation, the suspect pushed the victim to the floor, pinning her down, then forced her into the bedroom where he took off his clothes and threw her cell phone, breaking it. After the victim escaped via the back door, the suspect kicked in the front door, chasing after the victim.   D/S A. Rarey conducted a thorough follow-up and eventually had the suspect agree to meet him. The suspect agreed to travel to the ACSO station to participate in an interview with CID. Following his interview, the suspect was arrested and transported to ACSO DOJ without incident.

4/28/2011 ACSO CR 11-3635: Burglary (Follow-up).  At 12:47 AM on 04/15/11, a call came in about a suspicious person in the area of CR234 & CR1474. Earlier, on 04/14/11, several units, including Air 1 and K-9, responded to that area and arrested three of four burglary suspects. Deputies returned back to the area in an unmarked patrol vehicle, turning onto CR 1474 in an attempt to spot the suspect. After traveling 3 miles east bound without meeting the suspect, the deputies returned to CR 234 and traveled north bound, for approximately 1/4 of a mile and spotted a white male on the west side of the roadway. The suspect was wearing clothing matching the description of the burglary suspect who was not apprehended earlier. The deputies drove up to the suspect and simultaneously opened their car doors and gave the suspect verbal commands to stop. The suspect ran around the passenger side of the unmarked patrol vehicle, while the deputies gave several clear verbal commands, "Sheriff's Office Stop". The suspect continued to run south bound and one of the deputies fired his Taser, striking the suspect in the back. The suspect was handcuffed and searched. EMS responded and checked the suspect who was identified as a 21 YOA W/M, who was arrested and taken to ACSO by Deputy Gregalot.

6/2/2011 ACSO CR 11-5424: Explosive Device at the Ranch Motel.   An explosive device was located and reported to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to Hawthorne and rendered the device safe. There had been several devices detonated in mailboxes over the course of a few months prior to this incident that were similar to the one found at the Ranch Motel. This one was a rubber doll head filled with explosives. Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms was contacted to collect evidence and send it to their lab. The device was real and was equivalent to a stick of dynamite! If citizens encounter any explosive devices, they should not move it and use appropriate stand-off and evacuation procedures.

6/27/2011 ACSO CR 11-6179: Possession of Marijuana. D/S A. Davis conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling south at 10000 SE US301, for loud music. After calling the driver back to his patrol vehicle, Davis approached the vehicle with the driver to retrieve his driver’s license. Davis detected the smell of green Cannabis inside the vehicle. A search was conducted and Davis noticed a loose compartment under the radio. Davis located multiple plastic bags containing a digital scale, a Cannabis grinder, a glass pipe and a large baggie with US Currency. Searching further, Davis noticed a large speaker box in the back. The port was stuffed with bubble wrap and insulation; once removed, Davis located a large plastic bag of Cannabis stuffed inside the speaker box. The driver was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Cannabis With Intent to Distribute. Deputy W. Riley assisted in the investigation. Recovered were 80g of Cannabis, paraphernalia, and $1400.00 in US Currency.

7/23/2011 ACSO CR 11-7064: Grand Theft/Provide False Info to LEO/Operate Motorcycle w/o Endorsement. D/S N. Vickers conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle at the 7700 block of NE US HWY 301 for failure to stop at a red light. Subsequent to an FCIC/NCIC check, it was discovered that the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle he observed run the red light was listed as stolen out of Duval County the previous day. D/S Vickers made contact with the operator, who originally gave a false name and advised D/S Vickers that the motorcycle belonged to his father-in-law, “Greg”. The vehicle actually belonged to a different individual, and D/S Vickers arrested the suspect on charges of Grand Theft, Providing False Information to a Law Enforcement Officer and Operating a Motorcycle without a Valid Endorsement.

8/2/2011 ACSO CR 11-7406: Suicidal Subject. Deputies responded to a reported suicidal subject. One of the residents there had called his domestic partner's counselor, at his request, and that had in turn triggered a request by the counselor for ACSO to make contact with the subject and evaluate his status. When ACSO arrived on scene, the subject did not appreciate our presence and refused to speak with us at first. After numerous announcements on the P.A., the subject made contact with CCC and advised that he would like for us to leave the premises. After speaking with the domestic partner, who had come outside at the first announcements, we were able to determine that the subject had not harmed himself, nor had he apparently made creditable threats to do so. Due to the fact that the subject contacted CCC numerous times sounding agitated, but not impaired, and the fact that he had been seen by his partner immediately after our arrival with no injuries, the deputies decided that there was no reason to continue to escalate a potentially hostile situation just to speak face to face with the subject. After conferring with the on-duty shift commander, the deputies decided to leave the area and return later if necessary. There were no injuries. The counselor who requested ACSO make contact was notified that we had spoken to the subject indirectly, and he did not request, nor apparently require our assistance at this time. This incident was documented.

8/20/2011 ACSO incident number 082011-0142: Vehicle Accident. Deputies responded to 24025 SE US HWY 301 south bound for a traffic crash involving a semi pulling two trailers that had crashed. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the semi was carrying two loads of canister refrigerant, with no apparent leakage of the refrigerant. HWY 301 was narrowed down to one lane for approximately four hours until two semi tow trucks could respond to the scene. Once they arrived, HWY 301 south bound was totally shut down for approximately one hour until the roadway could be cleared. The driver was not injured in the crash, and an apparent load shift caused the semi to tip over and crash.

8/27/2011 Crime Prevention Analyst Katie Fields and Kristen Benedini attended the Hawthorne Assembly of God annual Safety Day. Fields and Benedini provided activity books, stickers, and safety information to children and adults.

8/29/2011 ACSO CR 11-6915: Sexual Battery. Detective Glenn Jones arrested a male subject after conducting follow up investigation on a reported sexual battery that occurred on 7/19/2011. The suspect was identified early in the investigation based on information provided by the victim. Detective Jones, with the assistance of Crime Analyst Mike Dwyer was able to identify two prior sexual batteries committed by the suspect, as far back as 2006. Physical and DNA evidence is expected to link the suspect to all three of these cases. Additional charges were pending at the time of the report.

9/8/2011 ACSO CR 11-8615: Suicidal Subject. Deputies responded regarding the report of a suicidal subject. A friend of the subject contacted ACSO because of a phone call she had just received where the subject stated, “I just want to die.” Upon arrival, deputies located the subject’s truck in the driveway and noticed that there were numerous lights on inside the house. Deputies began knocking loudly, provided loud verbal commands, and utilized their PA system in an attempt to make contact with the subject. Numerous phone numbers were attempted with negative contact. D/S E. Clark looked thru the kitchen window and observed a note on the kitchen table and numerous pills. D/S E. Clark looked into the master bedroom window and observed a female lying face down in the bathroom. A/Sgt. F. Kinsey forced entry into the house to determine the status of the female and render aid. The female subject was found breathing, but was unresponsive. She was transported by EMS to Shands for medical treatment and a Baker Act was completed.

10/2/2011 ACSO CR 11-9402: Domestic Battery. Deputies responded to the Lochloosa area to conduct a well-being check on female subject in reference to possible domestic violence. While on-scene, it was learned that the female had been battered by her husband. After arguing, the suspect had grabbed the victim around her neck with both of his hands. This caused the victim to almost lose consciousness, and also left distinct marks on her neck. The suspect began complaining of difficulty breathing, and was transported to SHANDS by ACFR. D/S Monson placed the suspect under arrest for Domestic Battery by Strangulation.

10/21/2011 ACSO Incident #102111-0078: Traffic Crash - Assist Other Agency. Deputies responded to a possible single vehicle THI at 13300 SE Hawthorne Road. The 37 YOA female driver appeared to be heading east bound toward Hawthorne at a “high” rate of speed. The driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle as she rounded the corner trying to pass a vehicle. The vehicle slid sideways across the median, went airborne and rolled approximately 200 yards. The driver had a revoked driver’s license and a history of DUI. She was trauma alerted by ACFR to Shand’s Hospital. She had a hospital BAC of 0.285. The scene was turned over to FHP.

10/25/2011 ACSO CR 11-10223: Narcotics Violation/Scheme to Defraud. D/S Hardy was doing an increased patrol at the Lochloosa United Method Church reference drug complaints when he came upon a suspicious vehicle. The driver, a 23 YOA W/F, spontaneously admitted that a back seat passenger had crack cocaine. A consent to search of the vehicle resulted in 16 crack cocaine rocks being found in the constructive possession of a 51 YOA W/M. The male suspect also had diazepam pills on his person. The 24 YOA W/M front seat passenger admitted to being in possession of 2.5 pills of Oxycodone, and he had two outstanding warrants. The older W/M refused to cooperate and was booked into the jail. The female driver and younger W/M provided detailed information to deputies concerning their drug use and an on-going scheme to defraud retailers, using stolen merchandise, found receipts and gift cards. Gainesville Alachua County Drug Task Force responded and conducted debriefs. Detective Beveridge also responded reference the Scheme to Defraud that involved Publix, Lowes, Home Depot, CVS and Cracker Barrel stores, mostly in Marion County. Fraudulently obtained property was recovered from inside the suspect’s vehicle. The older W/M was named as a principal in the scheme that involves other local residents. The female driver was released after giving a statement. The younger W/M suspect was booked on his warrants with the drug charges pending.

10/26/2011 ACSO CR 11-10262: Missing Person. On 10/26/11, at 2342 hours, deputies responded to a report regarding a missing person. Upon arrival, it was learned that a male subject had left the residence in which he came to visit, to go hunting. He left the residence around 1700 hours on foot and had not returned by 2000 hours. His wife became highly concerned for his safety because he was not familiar with the area, which was heavily dense. The wife believed at some point that her husband would attempt suicide due to his recent depression and attempts in the past. The responding deputies were able to assure the family and friends on scene that every effort would be made to locate the missing adult and return him home. A search was conducted of the wooded area with ACSO K-9. Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) was called and responded to assist with their K-9 as well. After searching the area for several hours, the missing adult was not located in the wooded area. The search continued with family members along with FWC to expand further along the roadways, by vehicles. The missing adult was located wandering along the roadway near the Earlton area, unharmed. He was located at approximately 0500 hours and was very appreciative of everyone's efforts to help find him.

11/10/2011 ACSO CR 11-10747: Aggravated Assault. Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance between neighbors. The victim reported that his neighbor had threatened him with a gun, and he believed the neighbor was a suspect in a previous residential burglary. Deputy Rarey obtained consent from the homeowner to search the home and then consent from the suspect to search his room. Inside the room they located a firearm that was taken in a previous/recent residential burglary and matched the description of the one used to threaten the victim. The 22 YOA male suspect was arrested for the aggravated assault as well as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Detective Tell responded to speak to the suspect about the residential burglary.

11/23/2011 ACSO incident number 112311-0091: Warrant Service. Deputies responded to a NE Alachua County resident to attempt service of a 32 YOA male subject in reference to Bradford County warrants for: Burglary, Dealing in stolen property and Grand theft, with a total bond of $75,000. After numerous PA announcements the suspect exited the residence and was arrested without incident.

12/2/2011 ACSO CR 11-11426: Aggravated Assault and Domestic Battery by Strangulation. Deputies responded to a residence in Hawthorne to investigate an alleged Domestic Battery. The investigation revealed that a 49 YOA male subject battered his live in girlfriend by grabbing her around the throat and threatening to strike her with a frying pan. The male subject was arrested for aggravated assault and domestic battery by strangulation.

COPS Analyst Katie Fields attended Hawthorne City Commission meeting to present the survey results as requested by Interim City Manager Ellen Vause. Cpt. Stophel, Lt. Bennett, Sgt. Kinsey, and Det. Beveridge were in attendance to show support and to discuss any law enforcement related issues the community had.

JUVENILE RELATIONS BUREAUThe School Resource Deputy (SRD) program has a contractual agreement with the Alachua County Public Schools that places deputies in Alachua County middle and high schools. The deputies’ responsibilities include law enforcement, counseling, mentoring and education. The Juvenile Relations Bureau is also involved in Teen Court, the Washington D.C. Safety Patrol trip and Operation Spring Break where Deputies patrol at beaches in St. John’s County.

ACSO Deputy Sheriff Charles McCray is assigned to Hawthorne High School.

There were Seventeen (17) reports written by the School Resource Deputy in Hawthorne (Hawthorne Middle/High School.)

Of the Seventeen (17) reports:Three (3) were Cleared with Arrest (VOP x2 and Disorderly)Four (4) were Cleared with Sworn Complaint (Simple Assault, Battery, Trespass and Possession of Marijuana Less 20 G)

Media Advisory: Death Investigation

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Combined Communications Center received multiple 911 calls advising that someone had been shot in Hawthorne. Deputies and EMS personnel responded to the area. Upon their arrival, they located a 23 year-old victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was declared deceased on scene by EMS personnel.

Initial investigation revealed that the shooting may have been the result of a disturbance, but the victim’s role in the disturbance is unknown at this time. Detectives are conducting interviews with witnesses and neighbors in the area. The investigation is continuing and more information will be released as it becomes available.

If you have any information about this crime, please call the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office at (352)-955-1818. Callers may also remain anonymous and be eligible to receive a reward up to $1,000 by calling Crime Stoppers at (352) 372-STOP (7867).

Anyone that provides information on this crime that leads to an arrest and seizure of a firearm is eligible for a $1,000 cash reward through the Alachua County Gun Bounty Program. The gun bounty callers can remain anonymous throughout the process by calling Crime Stoppers at (352) 372-STOP (7867) or the Gainesville Police Department’s tip line at (352)-393-7700 where they are also eligible for a cash reward. It is our belief that the Gun Bounty Program and GPD’s cash tip line will encourage the community’s involvement and play a key role in being able to quickly identify and locate violent suspects.
