Aladdin: A Bollywood Musical

Hello 8th grade parents, I wanted to send a brief message about some calendar items you might want in advance for planning purposes. This year I will be working with the 8th grade on Aladdin: A Bollywood Musical that will be performed on March 6th, 7th, and 8th 6:30pm. Student Participation ALL 8th GRADE Wed. March 1st (May be 1-4pm) 2:15-5pm: All Cast & Singers/Band ****body mics and sound FRIDAY, MARCH 2nd 1-5:45PM SCHOOL MEETING HOUSE DRESS REHEARSAL--ALL 8TH GRADE MONDAY, MARCH 5TH 1-5:45PM SCHOOL MEETING HOUSE DRESS REHEARSAL--ALL 8TH GRADE MARCH 6TH, 7TH, 8TH SHOWTIME 6:30PM ALL 8TH GRADE For those students who take on a larger commitment (all speaking roles) in the show, play rehearsals start Friday October 28th and run through March 2nd. These rehearsals run Fridays 2:45-5:45pm. Casting will be announced Oct 26th or 27th. I work around the Brookwood sports game schedule in the fall. In the Winter there are no Friday games for 8th grade(There are a couple hockey games that we work around). Students who commit to the Friday rehearsals really need to reserve that time.

There are many wonderful opportunities to be involved in this play process with your students. Below are some volunteer options for this year.

Parent Involvement There are many great opportunities to be involved in this play process with your students. The following are brief descriptions of the various volunteer needs.

8th Grade Musical—Aladdin: A Bollywood Musical

Parent Volunteer Roles & Committees Parent Coordinators: (Tracey Byrne, Beth Payson, Kim Ober), (September-March) The Parent Coordinators split, organize, and oversee the volunteer committees. This position was created to ensure that we have enough help in each area. The coordinators are also the prime communicator between the director and the parents. These parents attend back-to-school-night to enlist volunteers, set up initial committee meetings, help with the cast board, and check in with committees from time to time. *Parent Coordinators organize tee-shirt design, list, and handout for 8th graders and adults involved with the play. *Parent Coordinators organize the flower/gift presentation the final night of the show. Cast Board Committee: (4-5 people), (November only) This committee works the first three weeks of November to create a cast board for the show. This is used as a display for the community after casting has been done and as a display the nights of the show. Costume Committee: (6-7 people), (October and January-March) Led by the Costume Coordinator, this team works to take measurements at the end of October and then sew/organize through February. The Costume Coordinator designs and buys material and patterns. This committee has members who can sew the given material and patterns. We could also use a member who might not sew, but is highly organized. Prop Committee: (2 people), (November-January-all props done by Jan. 20th) The Prop Committee is given a list of prop needs for the show. The committee, scours the North Shore for free props. Imagine it is as extended treasure hunt!

Art Committee: (10 people), (January-end of February) This group is lead by Suzanne Kelsey, Art teacher. We are looking for parents who have had some experience/interest in the field of art and are willing to spend time painting in the art room and on stage. Ticket Committee: (4 people), (Jan.-Feb.- 4 meetings and 2 weeks selling tickets) This group is looking for a leader. The committee will gather for two meetings in January to design a seating chart and plan the ticket cover (using student art work-check with Kathy Stewart). Tickets are sold online. Hall Committee: (2 people), (early meeting in the fall and set up weekend before show) The music hallway is usually transformed to reflect the spirit of the play. This committee designs and decorates the hallway the week of the show. Photographer: (2 people), (photos of choreography rehearsals and some Friday rehearsals) We keep a photo diary of many rehearsals along the way to include in our “memories & bloopers” video that is attached to the video of the show. We also display rehearsal photos in the hall for the general student body to enjoy. Snack Committee: (16 people), (Nov.-March-snacks provided for all Friday/Sat. rehearsals) This committee provides treats for the starving cast that rehearses every Friday afternoon from 2:30-5:30 pm. The committee leader makes a schedule and publishes this to the committee. Each week one person will be in charge of snacks and one person on drinks. Makeup Committee: (20-25), (meet mid-January and beginning of February) This group will assess how much makeup we have and what additional items are needed to purchase for the play. The makeup committee will be at Brookwood for one makeup rehearsal before the show and then will alternate doing makeup the three nights of the show. Intermission Snack Committee: (2 current 7th grade parents) Two people each night of show coordinate handing out juice and snacks in Moniz Dining Room the nights of the show. Set Construction: (2 people)(Jan-March) .We are looking for experienced carpenters/set constructors who can dedicate time during the school day Jan-March to work on stage/sets/large props. Also, The Thursday before President’s Day weekend we need help setting up the stage from noon-5pm. Program: (1-2 people) (Jan-March) Need someone to design/create fonts for program and layout program. We do printing here at Brookwood.

Cast Party: (2-4 people) A parent or several parents usually get together to organize/host a celebration for the cast on the night after the last show. It is preferable to have a location close to the school. (Guidelines will be provided to the host.) Clean up Crew: (2 people) We need help running some of the costumes through the laundry after the show. Aladdin: A Bollywood Musical--- Rehearsal Schedule 2011/2012 FALL TERM 8th grade Blocking Rehearsal Schedule ***8th grade year is a very busy one for students...Please always bring a book or homework to play rehearsals. If there is any downtime for a student, there is a designated “quiet” area to work. Band and Band singers will have no down time. **There are many individuals I am seeing during the school day, which is why not all 8th grade students are listed for Friday rehearsals. Please donʼt be concerned about the level of your studentsʼ involvement in the play from the names listed below. MOST of the play rehearsal work happens during the day at school. These extra rehearsals are for blocking small group of students during dialog. We do need help during these rehearsals, so if your child does not attend these sessions but wants very much to be involved, please see me.
