Education
Benefits of Reading to your Kids
Before children can even talk, their language development has already begun. One of the most beneficial ways to grow your child’s vocabulary is to read aloud to them on a daily basis. Even if they’re not yet capable of repeating the words they hear, children have stored those words into their minds. Reading aloud to your child strengthens the relationship you have with each other as well as teaches your child many skills that will help them thrive later on in life.
Many people may want to “baby talk” to infants, but this can be potentially harming to a child’s vocabulary as they learn to talk. A child’s vocabulary grows every time you communicate a new word to them. Conversing with your child helps tremendously with their vocabulary, but reading gives children the opportunity to hear words that may not be spoken in everyday conversations and the plots of the books will blossom new ideas in their head, promoting critical thinking. Reading aloud to your child also creates a positive association with books and reading that will carry on throughout your child’s life.
Reading to children before they enter kindergarten benefits them greatly. Going into school with a knowledge of books and reading will give them confidence and prepare them for success. The transition between leaving home to attend school for
the first time in one’s life is challenging and can leave a child overwhelmed, but the familiarity of reading will help during this time. Children who are read aloud to are also better listeners, a skill that is vital once they enter elementary school.
Reading provides endless amounts of positive, educational benefits, as well as personal benefits. Although your child may seem too young to remember the precious time spent reading together, it makes all the difference in their future lives. Reading aloud strengthens the relationship between parent and child and steers your child towards a bright and confident future.

Family Healthcare
Fun Family FitnessThe time has come to start putting away our winter clothing
and begin the transition into springtime. With the weather reaching warm, but not scolding, temperatures, it’s the perfect time to begin a new exercise routine outdoors. San Antonio has a countless number of beautiful trails and parks for your family to explore. Whether you’re walking, running alongside your kids or riding your bikes, you’ll be soaking in the benefits of being outdoors and getting everyone’s heart rate up.
Bask in the beauty of nature on the Greenway Trails- 41 miles of developed trails, all of which were funded through sales tax during the past several years. Voters approved funding for the Greenway project in 2000, 2005 and 2010, proving that our community has a desire, and drive, to stay fit. With 41 miles of trails all surrounded by gorgeous greenery, your family might forget it’s family workout time.
Thirty city parks have expanded outdoor workouts by adding fitness equipment stations. Now, you don’t have to choose whether you want to exercise outdoors or work with gym quality machines. Adding variety to your workout will not only keep your family entertained longer, you’ll also be receiving a greater, full body workout.
If your family wants to enjoy physical exercise in a purely natural environment, go on a mini field trip to some of the most stunning wilderness locations in San Antonio. The Botanical Gardens, Japanese Tea Gardens, Friedrich Wilderness Park and Medina River Natural Area all have amazing landscapes to enjoy while getting your workout in. Some of these areas feature group hikes and active nature programming on certain days during the month.
Staying fit is not just important, it’s vital for your family’s health. Working out with your children raises their chances of living a healthier and longer life. To find out where the Greenway Trails are located, which parks have fitness equipment stations or for more information about any of the parks mentioned, please visit www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec.

As the kids joyfully celebrate their one week vacation, parents come to the realization that they no longer have spring break. Instead of hiring a baby-sitter and risking a week of nonstop video games and television, enroll them in one of the great spring break camps offered around San Antonio.
If your child loves the outdoors, then the Botanical Garden spring break camp is ideal. From March 11-15, create chalk art, make a lei, learn about sea creatures and more! The camp lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The San Antonio Children’s Museum has an exciting camp for all the mini scientists. Children will participate in exciting and educational experiments throughout the day. Make sure to provide your child with a sack lunch for this spring break adventure. The Spring Break Science Camp is from March 11-15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Acting Up will be featuring Spring Break on Film from March 11-15. Children will playfully create fun and exciting movies with their peers. Spring Break on Film lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but before care begins at 7:30 a.m. and after care ends at 6:30 p.m.
During the summer, Inspire Fine Art will be offering both half day and full day camps. Each camp will have a theme, all focusing on visual arts. Children will also be creating art of their own using clay, pastels and paints.
San Antonio School for the Performing Arts also has themed summer camps. From June 18-22, children ages 6-10 will be learning the choreography, songs and music of the Little Mermaid. Children ages 11 and up will be learning Mamma Mia. Disney Spectacular for the younger age group starts on July 9-13 while the older children begin Guys and Dolls. From July 23-27, the Lion King will be taught to the younger age group and West Side Story will be taught to the older children.
For an educational summer experience, sign your child up at the Bilingual Child Academy where camps consist of cultural enrichment, sports and games, Lego class, computer lab time, arts and crafts in a bilingual environment and weekly filed trips.
Kids Jam Summer Camps will be hosted by Northwest Vista for children in grades 1st through 8th with a different theme every week. Some themes include astronomy camp, dinosaur detectives camps and around the world camp.
Summer camps at the YMCA start on June 10 and last until August 23. Children ages 5 to 13 will engage in fun activities, art projects, group games and field trips!
With so many summer camps to choose from, you wont’ have to worry if your child is having a fantastic, and safe, summer vacation! For more information on any of the spring break or summer camps mentioned, please visit www.alamoareakids.com
