FOUR FILMS BYSHIRLEY CLARKE

“Dancer, bride, runaway wife, radical filmmaker and pioneer -- Shirley Clarke is one of the great undertold stories of American independent cinema.”-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times

''I'm revolting against the conventions of movies. Who says a film has to cost a million dollars and be safe and innocuous enough to satisfy every 12-year-old in America?'' -- Shirley Clarke

Working at a time when few women were making movies, Shirley Clarke boldly revolutionized what was possible in the world of independent film. Moving from dance to cinema, she fused together experimental, documentary and narrative film techniques, turning her camera on junkies, poets, hustlers, gang members and jazz musicians. Always pushing boundaries while staying true to her own vision, Clarke was met with censorship and marginalization at every turn, ignored by historians and written off as a dilettante. anks to Milestone, several of her greatest films have now been made available in brand new 35mm prints and we're very proud to present them. Please join us in celebrating the incredible Shirley Clarke.

THE CONNECTION (1962, 35mm)An unapologetic look at a group of heroin addicts waiting together in a seedy apartment for their dealer to arrive with a fix.

THE COOL WORLD (1964, 16mm)Teenaged Hampton Clanton has big ambitions: to get a gun and take over Harlem gang e Royal Pythons.

PORTRAIT OF JASON (1965, 35mm)Jason Holliday -- black, gay and a self-declared hustler -- narrates, invents, confesses, makes claims and ultimately challenges the camera in this feature length conversation. e result is a mesmerizing portrait of a remarkable, charming and tortured man who is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking.

Music Monday:ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA (1985, 35mm)Captures Ornette Coleman's evolution over three decades, from his boyhood in segregated Texas to his subsequent emergence as an American cultural pioneer and world-class icon.

THE STALLONE ZONE

(35mm x 5)AN UNBELIEVABLE FIVE MOVIE MYSTERY MARATHON! Put a matchstick in your mouth and prepare for a double arm-pumping dose of heavy-lifting Sylvester Stallone. is talented writer, actor, and director has been nominated for Academy Awards and can bench press a car, yet still manages to get less respect than Rodney Dangerfield. NO MORE! is all-day marathon will feature his greatest jams, slams, and body rams in an all-out assault on your senses as you watch the man they call Sly flex all his acting, directing, writing, and muscling muscles for your viewing pleasure as we take a stroll through his 40 YEAR CAREER. Grown men will cry, bones will be crushed, guns will be fired, and vein-popping biceps will glisten as we celebrate the toughest of the tough strutting around in his best, most triumphant stuff.

United Court of Austin Presents: BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (1982, 35mm)is screening is being held as a fundraiser for UCA Charities benefiting Project Transitions and the Wright House Wellness Center, both terrific organizations offering tireless support for those living with HIV/AIDS in our community. Complete with a performance by the ladies of the United Court of Austin featuring Austin's very own Dolly Parton, Ms. Dee Dee Davis.

BRIDEGROOM (2013)is true story about how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out and ostracized during tragic events is poignant, enraging and opens a window to the issue of marriage equality like no speech or lecture ever will.

Girlie Night: MEAN GIRLS Quote-Along (2004)Guaranteed to be even better than a cake of rainbows and smiles, so whether you're a Plastic, a Mathlete or a Badass M.C., prepare yourself for a totally gruel time. Screens on 9/5, then again on 9/17 & 9/24.

Music Monday: PEACHES DOES HERSELF (2012)Presented by Polari. e Texas Premiere of this ultra fierce documentary starring, directed by, and featuring the music of Austin PRIDE 2012 headliner Peaches! F*ck the pain away.

The Action Pack: WAY GAY Sing-Along ere will be so much dancing, glowsticks and confetti, it will make a party on Fire Island feel like your small, hometown Founder's Day Parade!

THE ACTION PACKINTERACTIVE SCREENINGS AND CINEMATIC EVENTS

ANIMAL HOUSE Toga Party (1978)A full on party experience, one where we’re going to start off with a Toga Fashion show, have a Shout dance party, and, of course, paddle each other as we’re initiated into the greatest fraternity on the Alamo campus.

BILLY MADISON Quote-Along (1995)"Have some more sloppy joes!" Go back to school with Adam Sandler. With live dodgeball in the theater! Free penguins for all! And Action Pack shampoo! (Because shampoo is better.)

GREASE Sing-Along (1978)Call up your Pink Ladies and T-Birds and join us at Rydell High, where we'll cheer on Greased Lightening, swoon over Sandy and Danny and sing ourselves silly. Because when it comes to fun, we're racing for pinks.

SINGIN' WITH FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES: The Country Sing-AlongYes, there will be songs about tractors, whiskey, cheatin' hearts and love letters that ask you to check "Yes" or "No." So button up those pearl snaps, slip on some Noconas, pick out your favorite Stetson and head on down to the Drafthouse for the rootinest, tootinest time you'll ever have this side of the Mississippi!

MASTER PANCAKEAUSTIN'S FAVORITE MOVIE MOCKING MAESTRO

TERROR TUESDAY — $3ONE DARK NIGHT (1982, 35mm)Meg Tilly spends the night in a mausoleum in order to impress a high school girl gang called "e Sisters." is leads to teen angst, familial woes, exploding latex monsters, and a vampire with laser eyes. Also starring Adam West as Adam West.

HORROR HIGH (1974, 35mm)Vernon Potts is a high school nerd who drinks a secret potion, turns into a gimp-legged monstrosity, and stalks the school halls in search of people to dismember. Everything you could want from a gory DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE permutation that stars lots of NFL players.

GRADUATION DAY (1981, 35mm)Vanna White, Linnea Quigley, and Christopher George hang out while a madman picks off members of the high school track team in gloriously ridiculous ways. WARNING: Death by football.

MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH (1976, 35mm)Nerds vs. jocks in the ultimate quest for revenge! Plus hang gliding! is is a forgotten exploitation-horror gem that was ripped-off by everything from FRIDAY THE 13TH to HEATHERS. Includes teens dying via a hearing aid and an empty pool.

WEIRD WEDNESDAY — $3EXPLOITATION CLASSICS IN 35MM

THE YIN AND YANG OF MR. GO (1970, 35mm)A drug-inspired oddity from director/actor Burgess Meredith (co-starring Jeff Bridges and an evil James Mason.)

REDNECK (1973, 35mm)Telly Savalas and Franco Nero play a pair of wisecracking screw-ups who botch a jewel robbery and take a young boy hostage. Pretty soon they're tutoring the kid on the finer points of being a complete psychopath. Savalas, never noted for his actorly restraint, is like a runaway downhill ham-train. Hard-edged, violent, idiosyncratic... not your usual Italian crime movie.

BLACK CAESAR (1973, 35mm)Even today, Fred Williamson's character Tommy Gibbs stands tall as the coolest mob boss of them all. BLACK CAESAR is a classical tragedy played out on the streets of Harlem with a ridiculously brilliant score by James Brown.

QUEEN BOXER (1972, 35mm)Combines all the good aspects of the hallowed tradition of old school kung fu (poor dubbing, well worn plots and familiar sets and costumes) with the ass-rocking acrobatic moves of the incredible 16-year-old former Chinese Opera performer Judy Lee. She doesn't go looking for trouble but if it finds her, she'll strike like a cobra.

CHEERS! A CELEBRATION OF BRITISH DRINKINGAMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973, 35mm)BACK TO SCHOOL (1986, 35mm)Buster Keaton’s COLLEGE (1927, 35mm) with Austin Philharmonic OrchestraIF... (1968)KINDERGARTEN COP (1990, 35mm)RUSHMORE (1998, 35mm)

LABYRINTH (1986)FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980)THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985)

SECRET SUNDAY MATINEES with THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941)Join us every Sunday as we break out the 16mm projector and watch a chapter of the greatest cliffhanger serial of all time. Every week the thrilling superhero serial will be followed by a SECRET FEATURE. Get ready for monsters, gangsters, pirates, ghosts and more!

Broadway Brunch: 42ND STREET (1933, 35mm)Come and meet those dancing feet at the Broadway Brunch presentation of 42ND STREET, starring Warner Baxter, Bebe Daniels and Ginger Rogers.

AMERICAN GENRE FILM ARCHIVE REEL ONE PARTY (35mm)We're going to watch five "reel ones" (the first 15-20 min) of mysterious, undocumented films from the AGFA collection. No one knows what to expect, including us, so we're not promising that this won't destroy you.

Experimental Response Cinema: THE ART OF VISION (1965, 16mm)A monumental work from Stan Brakhage, ART OF VISION employs nearly all his poetic techniques -- including saccadic camera movement, radically variable focus, lens distortion, image inversion, painting on film, emulsion scratching, and more -- yielding an anthology of perception's myriad forms.

Music Monday:BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME (2012)With never-before-seen footage and photos of the band, in-depth interviews and a rousing musical tribute by the bands they inspired, BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a story of artistic and musical salvation.

Kid's Club: THE CHIPMUNK ADVENTURE (1987, 35mm) - FREE!Forget the CGI nightmare fule of the recent Chipmunk movies. is is no squeakuel. Join us for this totally free screening of the 80s classic with free themed gifts from Toy Joy!

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977, 35mm)A brand new 35mm print of Steven Spielberg's first contact classic. With mashed potatoes for all!

FoleyVision: FOR Y'UR HEIGHT ONLY (1981)e world's most unique film-viewing experience returns! All sound effects, music, and dialogue will be created by a team of hard-working Foley artists led by the masterful Buzz Moran. Join him as he and his compatriots travel to the Phillipines to find Weng Weng, the 2'9" secret agent.

Cinema Cocktails: IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000, 35mm)Wong Kar Wai's achingly beautiful masterpiece of romantic longing screens in 35mm with custom cocktails from Bill Norris.

Cinema Club: LONESOME with Caroline Frick (1928, 35mm)Caroline Frick (UT assistant professor, founder of Texas Archive of the Moving Image, and President of the Association of Moving Image Archivists) joins us to discuss this whirlwind marvel of experimentation and invention set in antic Coney Island.

Video Hate Squad: NINJA: AMERICAN WARRIOR (1987, VHS)Filled with flying kicks, harpoons, plenty of throwing stars, one severed finger, questionable uses of mannequins, and a pregnant lady who gets stabbed in the belly. And, in addition: NINJAS.

Bleeding Skull Book Launch: OGROFF (1983, VHS)BLEEDINGSKULL.COM, the authority on trash-horror cinema from the VHS gutters, hosts a special screening to celebrate their new book, BLEEDING SKULL! A 1980s TRASH-HORROR ODYSSEY. OGROFF is a benchmark in the halls of accidental, no-fi surrealism caught on Super 8/video/whatever.

PERSISTENCE OF VISION (2012)Visionary animator Richard Williams (ROGER RABBIT) toiled for three decades on his masterpiece THIEF AND THE COBBLER -- only to have it torn from his hands. Mind-blowing animation, rare archival footage, and exclusive interviews with key animators and artists are woven together to bring this legendary story to the screen for the very first time.

PIG ACROSS PARIS (1956)Two strangers struggle to move suitcases of freshly butchered black-market pork across Nazi-occupied Paris. A lost gem and a high point in the history of French cinema!

SUPER HAPPY FUN MONKEY BASH (2013)A brand new edition of this classic Alamo tradition. A 90 minute clipshow of mind-boggling insanity from the impossible world of Japanese television!

Zzang!!!: VICE VERSA (1988, 35mm)Judge Reinhold is Fred Savage and Fred Savage is Judge Reighold in this totally insane body swapper in 35mm!

WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S with Bernie in person! (1989, 35mm) We revive this 80s classic on the big screen with the corpse himself, TERRY KISER, alive and in person!

WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? (1988, 35mm)Take a trip back to Toon Town! As a technical achievement, ROGER RABBIT has still never been surpassed, standing tall as one of the most creative and purely entertaining movies ever made.

Homo Arigato: WILDNESS (2012)A portrait of the Silver Platter, a historic LGBT bar on the eastside of Los Angeles that has catered to the Latin immigrant community since 1963. With a magical-realist flourish, WILDNESS captures the creativity and conflict that ensue when a group of young, queer artists of color organize a weekly performance art party at the bar. What does “safe space” mean, and who needs it? e search for answers to these questions creates coalitions across generations.
