Mediterranean Assault at Cannon Field Cannon Field was turned into a battle field on December 7th and 8th as it commemorated Pearl Harbor and the 36th Texas Infantry Division’s historic skirmish in the Mediterranean. This first ever public event featured the Company G Re-Enactment Group from Camp Mabry and was hosted by the Alamo Liaison Squadron. Southlake RC Flyers Join ALS Membership It is our pleasure to welcome the Southlake RC Flyers (SLRCF) to the ALS membership. During the December ALS board meeting, a proposal was made to allow the Southlake RC membership to join the ALS as associate or full members. This move strengthens our efforts to keep Cannon Field a great place to fly for both the full scale planes and their remote control decedents. The decision to combine volunteers and manpower will benefit the upkeep of facilities, grounds, and aircraft. The Southlake RC Flyers have been a great help in the past during our annual picnic and other events, so we thought it only right to bring them in as members to allow a sense of belonging. If you have ever had the urge to see what flying the remote control version is like, take a walk over and get some first class flight instruction on the buddy box. Believe me when I say it’s harder than it looks. Elections for the SLRCF executive committee were held at the end of December. The following members were elected and will work closely with the ALS board of directors: Gib Powell, Rod Brannon, Donald Litherland, Hilmer Merz, and Rodney Claiborne. We look forward to a great 2008 flying season!

“Grasshopper Gathering 2008” – The Annual Bluebonnet PicnicThe Alamo Liaison Squadron will hold its Annual Bluebonnet Picnic on May 10th, 2008. This year’s theme is “Grasshopper Gathering 2008”. In an effort to gather as many of the liaison aircraft type used in WWII and to celebrate the men who flew them, we are going on an all-out call to our fellow pilots throughout Texas and beyond.

We are asking you to contact anyone you know with an L-Bird and invite them to our event. We are pushing this on our web site and throughout the flying community news links and channels. The picnic committee has been selected as follows: Ryan Short, Richard Roberts, Tiny Trenda, Gume Serna, Ron Dennis, Morgan Montalvo, Donald Litherland, Rod Brannon, and Gib Powell. We are soliciting donations from our membership to help defer the costs. If you would like to do so, please send your donation to the address listed on the front of the newsletter and mention in the check’s memo that it is for the picnic fund. Don’t forget to mark the date on your calendars!

ALS Board of Directors Election Results - 2008During the December Annual Membership Meeting the membership elected the 2007 board back by acclamation for 2008. The board members are: Ron Dennis, Richard Roberts, Stan Pennington, Henry Whitmore, and Gume Serna. We want to thank Baylor Randle, Tiny Trenda, and Wayne Meadows for being on the elections committee and conducting this important task.

2007 Year in ReviewThe board would like to give hats off to each and every member for your continued support to the ALS/Cannon Field Legacy. Here is a condensed list of what your donations, volunteerism, and efforts helped us to do during the 2007 Fiscal Year: New tires for the L-5 and L-2, overhaul of the fields Ford 8N tractor, a new intercom for the L-5, reprinting of Box Seat Over Hell (500 copies), Poteet Strawberry Festival Fly-Over, routine maintenance and annual inspections on all aircraft, hosting of the Mediterranean Assault, Annual Blue-bonnet Picnic 2007, new exhaust for the restoration of our third L-2, and the

building of three new hangars. SALUTE!

Around Cannon FieldBOX SEAT OVER HELL -Reprinted-New Cover Some of you may be aware that Hardy Cannon wrote a very informative and factual book called “Box Seat Over Hell”. This is a true story of the Liaison Aircraft and the men who flew them. Unfor-tunately, he only had a couple of hundred published and printed. Thanks to Mrs. Cannon, the ALS now has the copyrights to this great work and recently gave it a new cover and reprinted 500 copies. Ryan Short designed the new cover and deserves a lot of credit for making sure the book had an ISBN and Bar Code assigned to it in order to sell it from our web site and Amazon.com. If you would like to pur-chase a copy, please visit our web site. Price for this fine book is only $18.00 plus shipping and handling. You can also pick one up in person at the field.

DISPLAY ITEMS NEEDEDWe are in need of WWII memorabilia items that will help us to put together a display for the ALS. We are looking for anything related to the Liaison Pilot and that flying era. We plan to set these in some display boxes that we can take on the road with us to various flying activities. Please contact a board member if you would like to donate items.

SAFETY CORNERThe board of directors met in December to discuss existing safety rules at Cannon Field. A new Standard Operating Procedure (S.O.P) has been put into place and is now included in each aircraft’s handbook. All pilots need to familiarize themselves and review prior to flight at Cannon Field. There are several copies in the briefing room for those who own their own aircraft. Remember safety is paramount. Let’s keep an eye out for any hazards and report them to all who fly at the field.

Keep Em Flying!

Ron Dennis ALS Leader
