Issue #8
A bulletin written by 1-2 E.S.O. students in Diego de Siloé
Secondary School in Albacete
Issue #8 November 2010 Published by I.E.S. Diego de Siloé—Albacete http://www.diegodesiloe.com
At the beginning of a new
school year, I see a lot of new
people. In the class there are
new partners, who you can meet
and they can become your
friend.
Many subjects that we study are
different to the subjects that we studied in other
courses. The subjects can be more difficult, but
they are more interesting and there are many things
to learn. The not very good thing for me, is that we
have to get up early and this is sometimes difficult
for me. We have many new and different teachers,
and each one explains different
subjects. Another thing that you can do
is getting to know new people, in other
classrooms and groups, and they can
help you any day.
The economic crisis effects
get a lot of people fired.
People are worried because
they are losing their jobs and
they can’t pay their bills. So,
they don’t spend as much
money as, for example, two years ago.
People don’t spend money, because their
wages have decreased or because they are
unemployed. Firms don’t sell products, so they
don’t have to produce goods and, so for that, a
lot of people go on losing their jobs.
Some people that
have ideas to create a
new company and so
create more jobs, retire
the idea because they
can’t borrow money
from banks.
Since people aren’t
happy with this
situation, September 23rd, 2010 they went out to
the streets on strike to protest. But it didn’t have
too much repercussion because many workers
are afraid of been fired or that the government
or their chief get down their wages because,
according to the news many businessmen said
“if you don’t come tomorrow, don’t come the
day after tomorrow.
In this situation we only can
think in: What can we do to solve this
important problem? How can we go
away from this situation?

Why are we in crisis?

Today, I came to my class after my Science class in
the laboratory.
My friends were in my class with a native assistant
teacher from St. Andrews. Scotland Then, we started the class
with my English teacher, Mr. Cascales. The
native teacher’s name is Mary.
We played a question game and we talked about
our hobbies with a hat with two horns and red
hair. She distributed some postcards and we had
to describe them.
She also told us some things about her: Mary’s favourite music band is Queen. Her
favourite colour is blue.
Scotland has a population of around 5.500.000
people.
Scottish Parliament is seeking to increase the use of Gaelic.
The university of St. Andrews is the first university of Scotland.
I liked the class because I felt I learnt
more.

The autumn is when summer ends and leaves fall down of the
trees. I don’t like the autumn a lot because I can’t stay in the
street very long because the night comes early and it is very
cold. Besides, I have to go to sleep very early to go to high
school next day. And I spend the evening doing
my homework instead of going to the ``Pulgosa´´ park to ride my
bicycle.

Discussion about Europe Last Friday Mr Cascales organized a group
discussion in my English class to talk about “Europe”.
Some of the students thought that Europe is
the greatest continent, because our
monuments, and is richer than others. Other
g r o u p
discussed about why Europe is so European (in my
opinion this is an uncommon but very interesting
question). The answer was: Europe is so European because is different and perfect.
Another very interesting question was “What does it
mean to be European?”. The answer was given by
Daniel and it was:
“I think that it means to live in Europe and follow its
costumes and laws”
Another important question was:
“What are your favourite European companies and why do you like them?”
(I love this question because in my opinion it shows
two important things: 1 We prefer the Northern-
American companies, probably because their
marketing is better. 2 We are the consumerism-without-sense generation)
The answer was: “The sports companies: Adidas, Reebok and Nike, because they are
comfortable”
These are only a few questions, but ... What do you think about them?

Spanish food is very healthy.
It is based on the Mediterranean diet. This diet
consists mostly of fish, olive oil, fruits,
vegetables and pulses such as lentils,
chickpeas or beans.
In Spain there are a lot of different food. We
have typical meals like gazpacho, paella, our ham and cheese, typical
foods of each region, that are very
varied.
The Spanish omelette is a special
delicacy, either with potatoes,
peppers, onions or vegetables.
The pork is the most widely used
meat. We have sausages, black
sausages (morcillas), ham, bacon,
chops…The Spanish cuisine is
known worldwide.
I know that Spanish food is one of the healthiest in the world. I like it very much, the paella,
cassoulet, the Serrano ham or good sausages. The good cheese sandwiches are the best or the
bread with tomatoes and olive oil.
I recommend everyone to visit Spain and try our delicacies.
Spanish Food

There are different types of food as homemade, which is
what we cook at home. For example soups, stews and
traditional dishes.
Sometimes people that work and don´t have time for
cooking take home cooked food from a shop. It´s called
takeaway food.
When young people go out with friends they usually go to
fast food restaurants because they are cheaper and they
like those flavours for example: McDonald, Burger King …
But when the family go out to a restaurant for lunch or dinner, there are different types of
restaurants: international food (Italian, Chinese,…) vegetarian, homemade food…
When celebrating something important like a wedding, a baptism… we choose a special menu,
cooked by a great chef in a hotel or a good restaurant. You can also order food and bring it
to the place you want. That is called catering.
I prefer my grandmother’s homemade food. My favourite is pizza and quiche.
HOMEMADE FOOD vs. TAKE AWAY FOOD
Last October 4th, 2010 a group of students from IES Diego de Siloé travelled to
Germany along with two teachers and
visited the town of Kranichfeld,
participating in Comenius Project “My
city + Your city= Our Europe”.
They stayed for three days with
German families and they practiced
English and learnt some German.
They also joined all activities organized by school Staatlichee
Regelschule "Anna Sophia".
They learned how classes in
a German school work, they
visited the nearby
interesting sites and they also visited the city of Weimar, where they
visited Göethe and Schiller Museum, and the city of Erfurt, where Martin
Luther was a priest and professor.
Students from six different European countries enjoyed a lot and now they
have made new friends beyond frontiers.
And now our next destination will be Klaipeda in Lithuania!

Last time I went to a birthday party was an incredible and
special day with my friends. The birthday party was in the
afternoon.
I went with my English academy friends. It was Paula’s
birthday. She is my best friend of the English academy.
She is very funny, optimistic, energetic, nice and nervous.
We celebrated in Imaginalia’s cinemas. I can’t remember the title of the movie we saw but I know
that it was a scary movie. That night I could not sleep very well.
After the cinema we went to McDonalds. All of us ordered a happy meal but we were eating Pop
Corn before. And of course we played with the toys, as if we were younger girls. Next, we gave our
presents to her. The best present was Nuria’s present. It was a MP4. I thought that Nuria
was very rich.
In my opinion it was the best birthday party I’ve ever had.
