Over the past few weeks, we have been visiting classrooms conducting ‘Learning Walks’ where we ask
students five questions about their learning. As our school improvement agenda is focused on improving
the quality of student writing, we are narrowing the questions to explicitly focus on writing. The five
questions are:
1. What are you learning about in writing?
2. How are you doing?
3. How do you know?
4. What do you need to do to improve?
5. Where do you go for help?
We were super impressed with the level of understanding shown by our students and thought we would
share some of the learning walk responses from Year 6.
Year 6 Student
What are you learning? We are learning to compare two different texts that give the same message.
We are writing an argument.
How are you doing? Quite good. I’ve just finished my first draft, but still haven’t completed my
conclusion. I’ve just done immersive reader and I found some things to fix up and more vocabulary to
change.
How do you know? I use the marking guide and the success criteria.
What do you need to do to improve? Edit my work. Explore different words and sentence types. Check
it for TEEL. (Topic, Expand, Evidence, Link)

Year 6 Student
What are you learning? We are learning to write a comparison text. We are writing a comparison
between a narrative text and an information brochure about moon bears.
How are you doing? At the moment, I’m perfecting one paragraph before I move on to the next. I’ve just
started working on my language features paragraph. I think I’m going well. My introduction is the best.
How do you know? We have many ways to check. We have success criteria, our writing folder and
notes about what should be in a written argument.
What do you need to do to improve? Probably my vocabulary - using high modality words to make my
point strong. My writing goal is to use subordinating conjunctions and commas in my sentences.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
We have recently received notification from the Regional Music Department that we are to postpone instrumental music selection for 2021 until early Term 4. Children and parents will be informed after our school has been notified.
Because of this, the Information Sessions for both Strings and Concert Band planned for Wednesday 26 August (as per the School Calendar of Events) will also be rescheduled to a date in Term 4.
What are you learning? We are learning to argue a point of view. We need to be able to persuade the
reader.
How are you doing? I think I’m going well because I’m using a lot of high modality words.
How do you know? We are being critiqued by our classmates and I’m getting a lot of good feedback.
What do you need to do to improve? I think I need to improve my punctuation and make my sentence
starters more interesting.

School photos will be taken on 14 and 15 September. Payment envelopes with information have been emailed home. Students are to be dressed in their formal uniforms for all photos. This includes navy socks and plain black shoes. Long hair is to be worn up and hair accessories are to be in school colours – navy blue and/or maroon. A reminder about earrings – plain silver or gold studs or sleepers, one per ear only.

These have been emailed to parents and carers. Please note that My School Gear is our school supplier. Some of the profits from this service come back to the school. Using My School Gear ensures your child will have the exact correct equipment and this is appreciated by teachers.
2020 CROSS COUNTRY
This year’s Cross Country event will be held over two days with Years 4, 5 and 6 on Thursday 10 September and Prep, Years 1, 2 and 3 on Friday 11 September.
It will also be a fundraiser for the school’s Chaplaincy program which will allow Chappy Glenn to continue supporting children and families in our school community.
The fundraising aspect has no bearing on the results of, or participation in, the Cross Country.
CASUAL CLEANERS NEEDED!
Albany Hills State School are looking for cleaners to join our casual pool.
Must hold a valid ‘Working with Children Blue Card’
Available to work between 5am - 830am & 2.30pm - 6pm weekdays (split shifts)
Ability to learn new tasks quickly.
Experience in school cleaning is not essential.

A note and sponsorship booklet has been sent home with every student. There are some great prizes available for those students who do choose to fundraise. Whether they participate in the fundraising aspect of the Cross Country or not, every child who completes the course will receive a coloured wrist band with a special message of encouragement.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM 2020/2021
At the end of Term 2, the Albany Hills State School Student Leadership Program for 2020/2021 was
launched with our Year 5 students.
This is the first step in the process whereby our current Year 5 students can work towards the attainment
of a Senior Student badge which then qualifies them to nominate for a leadership position for 2021.
Parents of all Year 5 students should have received a special note home with their child. Students have
also received a copy of the yellow record card (2 pages) and a coversheet which they have placed in a
display folder.
The teachers have commenced working through the criteria with their students to help them identify
which ones they may already have met and what they need to work towards achieving next.
If you have had a child go through this process in previous years, you will note that parts have been slightly
modified to reflect the current restrictions we are all under and the difficulty students may have collecting
some information. If they are unsure at all about what is required or what is suitable to include, please
encourage them to have a chat with their class teacher.
It is an important part of this process that the Year 5 students take responsibility for attaining their badges.
They should be the ones collecting the information, organising what they need to do and putting together
their folders for submission.
Parents are very welcome to support them with this and encourage them along the way, but the work
needs to be done by the student. Please encourage them to be responsible for gathering and collating
the information, and for obtaining any necessary signatures. This is an important part of them
demonstrating that they have the necessary leadership skills to be a Senior Student.
The final date for submission of paperwork, if students wish to nominate for a 2021 leadership position, is
Monday 2 November (Week 5 of Term 4).

COVID has restricted us in our ability to hold a whole school cross country carnival like we did last year. Even though there are restrictions in place to keep us all safe, we are still keen to run a carnival for our students. Age champion medals will also be up for grabs for senior students (Years 3-6). Sadly, due to restrictions we are unable to allow parent spectators at the venue.
Year level groups will come out and run their respective distances according to their age. Grades 4-6 will run on Thursday 10 September and Prep -3 on Friday 11 September. Top 10 places and age champions for year 3-6 will be determined by comparing times across age levels in two different races. For example, the 11 year old champions will take the results of 11 year olds in year 5 and compare them to 11 year olds in year 6 to determine the top 10 fastest runners.
This is being communicated to all students in years 3-6 so they remember to run their best times on the day.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM
Parents in Prep-Year 3 should have received permission forms for the 2020 Learn to Swim program. Payment is due by September 11. Can you please ensure that you complete the swimming ability survey to help the instructors group students.
Students will be required to wear a bathing cap, one piece togs and a shirt (not school uniform). This shirt is for protection while moving from the classroom to the bus and back. It is not to be worn in the water. A swim shirt for the pool is optional. Please, no board shorts or two piece bikinis. They will also need to take a towel to each session. Students will not be permitted to wear any jewellery, including earrings and watches. Bathing cap should have your child’s first name marked clearly on the outside for swim instructors to see.
The pool has implemented some extra measures to help keep everyone safe. These are in line with the industry’s COVID safe plan.
1) Social distancing in the viewing area
2) Hand sanitizing stations plus all patrons will be asked to sanitize their hands before entering our premises
3) All equipment will be disinfected after every session
The classes will run on a GET IN – LEARN – GET OUT AND GO basis to maintain a safe environment for everyone.
If any of the students are feeling unwell, we urge them to stay home. If a pool staff member observes a child displaying cold/flu symptoms upon arrival at the centres, or during their swim lesson, they reserve the right to not allow or remove them from their class and request them to leave the centre immediately for the Health and Safety of all staff and students.

WINNING HOUSE FOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
After the longest athletics season in history we finally have a winning team. Congratulations to Fraser house for taking out the 2020 athletics trophy. Thanks to all the staff and students for their hard work and patience while undertaking a very different format. Thanks also to our wonderful groundsmen for keeping the oval looking fantastic.

HEALTH QUESTIONS
It’s that time of year again when all students undertake health lessons in classrooms with Mr Gason. One of the fantastic aspects of my teaching is to hear the wonderful stories about how students have made positive changes for themselves and their families in their day to day health.
I know that your child is likely to come home saying “Mr Gason said this…”. Don’t worry, I get it from my own children. I always say to the students that if they are going to make a change in their house then that is a discussion the child has with their family. It’s not my job to come into your house and run a health audit. However, it is important to listen to our children and model healthy behaviours. ENROLMENT APPLICATIONS FOR ALBANY CREEK STATE

Albany Creek State High School is inviting expressions of interest from prospective students for Year 7, 2021.
There has been an increase in demand for enrolments this year and I encourage all families who are considering Albany Creek State High School as a learning destination for their student to submit an application at your earliest convenience.

The P&C will be holding their annual Fathers’ Day Stall on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 September. There are many great gifts for fathers and grandfathers and children can purchase multiple gifts of their choosing.

SCIENCE SHARING—
YEAR 5 AND YEAR 2
This term 5LB and 5JG have been learning all about animal adaptations (structural, behavioural and physiological). The two classes researched various animals and then made posters showing what the animal eats, their population in the wild, threats, facts, their classification and their life cycle. We put in a lot of time and effort into our polar bear poster. We then shared them with Year 2 students as they have been learning about animal life cycles. The students were very interested in what we created (especially the shiny bits). We were astonished and impressed by their scientific vocabulary and knowledge.

GO KARTS!
Vroom! Did you know that go karting is a sport? Well, it is! Go karts reach speeds of 90km/h and all while you are sitting only 2cm off the ground! The closest tracks are at Ipswich (Ipswich Kart Club), Gympie (Cooloola Coast Kart Club) and Warwick (Warwick Kart Club). You can practise with your friends and race the races you want to do and maybe I will see you out there!

WHY DO GIRAFFES HAVE LONG NECKS?
Fossil evidence suggests that giraffes did not always have long necks. Once upon a time, giraffes had much shorter necks.
Can you imagine them looking like this?
These antelope-like animals roamed the grasslands of Africa 15 million years ago. Some of their necks were short like this but some were a bit longer. Fast forward another 10 million years and those antelope-like animals had developed into the present-day giraffes. Giraffes are the tallest living terrestrial animal and stand over 5 metres tall with nearly half of their height being their neck!
Giraffes are herbivores, which means they eat only plants. Their long necks allow them to reach leaves, seeds, fruits and buds high up in trees. The giraffe's neck, which can grow to as much as two metres high, has been selected because it gives the giraffe exclusive access to the topmost leaves of the trees, and no other animal can reach them. This is an adaptation designed to avoid competition for food with other animals. This would be great if you were competing against your siblings over the lollies!

YEAR 5 ANIMATION UNIT
As all of the Year 5 students know, we are doing a very different assessment task for Term 3 and that is animations. Each student must create an animation about an ethical dilemma. An ethical dilemma occurs when a difficult decision must be made and no outcome is desirable. The three ethical dilemmas we get to choose from is when you accidentally break a friend’s toy, when grandma gives you an ugly jumper for a birthday present or when your friend finds test answers and plans to cheat. As well as ethical dilemmas, we have been learning different skills on PowerPoint for our animation. We will be able to use the iPad to take photos or copy and paste images from the Internet onto PowerPoint. You can also take photos of drawings that you have drawn. This is a very interesting English assessment.

WHY IS HAND HYGIENE SO
IMPORTANT?
Over the past six months, we have had to adapt, change and improve the ways in which we live our lives. The COVID pandemic presents us with the opportunity to support each other and stick together! It is really important that we keep our hands clean to protect ourselves from germs and bacteria and to help stop the spread of any infection within our school and the community.
PRACTISE MAKES PERFECT
Because of COVID-19, Albany Hills State School has had to stop our amazing range of clubs and choirs. I am in Boys Choir and I am very sad and a bit bored at school now that the clubs have been stopped. I wanted to remind you that you should still practise your skills at home. If you are in a choir, you could find a song you like and sing it in the shower, car or when you are out in the playground. If you are in skipping club, you could buy a skipping rope and you could practise some tricks. Even if a club you like is not on, you could still practise the skill that club focuses on. If you are in art club just because it is closed does not mean you cannot practise your art skills. If we all keep following the regulations, the clubs will be back before we know it!
