◆ COVER STORY
Outreach van brings food to the hungryKUU-US CRISIS LINE: | Mobile program helps fill the gap in food distribution over the weekend with rotating Saturday locations.
SUSAN QUINNALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Seva Dhaliwal spends her Saturdays thinking about others.
In the morning, she goes on her usual errands: picking up baked goods and donated food at Save-On Foods, Fairway Market, Quality Foods, Tyler’s No Frills (which also provides cases of drinking water) and Buy-Low Foods.
Afternoons are spent putting together food hampers at the Kuu-us Crisis Line Society’s building on Adelaide Street.
Just before 5 p.m. she and at least one more volunteer head out in the Kuu-us mobile outreach van to hand out food hampers.
The mobile outreach program helps those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, said Elia Nicholson-Nave, executive director at Kuu-us Crisis Line Society. “It’s a way of reducing financial barriers.”
The program has been filling gaps in service for weekend food distribution for the past nine years. Dhaliwal started out using her own vehicle but the Alberni Valley Community
Foundation provided Kuu-us with a van a couple of years ago.
The weekend service sees anywhere from 20 to 55 clients, many people who come with their children, Nicholson-Nave said. “We get a wide range of individuals.”
They cover the entire Alberni Valley, with stops in Cherry Creek and Beaver Creek as well as throughout the city.
Donations for food come by way of the grocery stores as well as citizens putting food in the donation boxes at places like Quality Foods. The more food that is donated, the better the food that Dhaliwal and other volunteers are able to give clients, she says.
Hampers are
supplemented with fresh produce contributed by people who have extra from their fruit trees or from various groups around town.
During the winter, the mobile outreach team goes indoors at the Echo Field House and Echo Centre, offering hot food and a place to socialize—something Dhaliwal feels is important. Dhaliwal started the process when she used to set up outside the former video store
across from what is now the Coulson’s building on Third Avenue.
Dhaliwal wishes she could offer hot food year-round, as there has been a demand for it, but for now the program is given two or three months’ allowance inside city buildings during the coldest part of winter.
Dhaliwal is proud of how far the program has come, and what it offers to its clients. It started as an hour-long program at the
video store, and has doubled to two hours’ distribution in parking lots around the city, on a two-week rotation (half the parking lots are served one week, the other half the next week).
People who use the service “are greeted like guests, not street people. They’re just people; we don’t want to give them labels,” she says.
“We want to encourage people to stand on their own
feet and socialize with them to encourage them.
“Now they behave like family members,” she says.
“Seva is a passionate and caring person, and her dedication to help us help others is proven in her years working with this project,” Nicholson-Nave said.

England’s a bewitching place, where fairies liveand Canadian money quickly disappears
Sitting here trying to write this column jet-lagged and
sleep deprived. I just got back from England on the 10:45 p.m. ferry, drove through the night and got home in good old Port Alberni at 2:30 a.m.
Reg (Les’s father) lived in England and was one week shy of 101 years old when he passed on, leaving a dirty, messy house and even messier English red tape. Two weeks was my limited stay in Yorkshire because we left the house, dog, and cat in Lil’s care and I have an operation in Nanaimo (yuck) to look forward to. Les, however, has to stay there for three to four months for the will and probate.
England is a magical place of witches, elves, goblins and fairies; no, I didn’t see any. They seem to emanate from the very ground that I walked on though.
The scenery is magnificent: lone stone houses on windswept moors,
miles of green fields with natural stone walls, narrow roads
that are more used to having horse and carriage. Made me
wonder, where are the 52 million people hiding?
We rented a small Vauxhall car (cost us 400 pounds or $800 in our money for the two weeks) so that we could make trips to the local garbage dump and do some grocery shopping. It was a bit difficult getting used to driving on the left side of the road.
There were a few narrow escapes when I was driving where Les would say “ No, no stay on the left”.
England is very expensive, not a country to be poor in, especially since every time that I spent one English pound I was spending two Canadian dollars. Gasoline is one pound and 8 pence per litre or $2.16 per litre in Canadian funds.
I found it very easy to forget the $2 = 1 pound rule when I was in the stores shopping around. The Pound Store is a wonderful place to shop, they have everything for the house that one would want for a pound; it makes our Loonie stores look like a corner shop.
One day we had breakfast at the British Home Store (BHS) where you could get four items
for one pound 99 ($4.00) so I had two pieces of bacon, one fried egg, one serving of beans, I also ordered two pieces of toast for an extra 30 pence. The coffee is dispensed through a coffee machine.
Knowing that the English like to have more milk than coffee in their cups, I pressed the button for black coffee, the machine dispensed hot water until the cup was 7/8ths full then some very black coffee filled the cup to the top. I sat down and tasted the coffee….uchhh, it tasted like sewage sludge.
I brought it back and ordered a very milky latte instead.
Once again
forgetting that the pound is worth two dollars I ordered some cigars at the duty-free shop at Heathrow. The clerk said “would you like to pay in Canadiandollars”?
Since I was paying with Visa, I said yes. What a shock when I found that the package of five Havana 39£ cigars cost $78 in Canadian funds.

It’s news to me(What colour did you think the dress was?)
Last week a young woman living in Scotland posted
a picture online of a two-tone dress the mother of her engaged friend was planning to wear to the wedding. Under the close-up photo, her caption read: “guys please help me – is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the (bleep) out.”
I’m sure most of you know what happened next. The picture and question went viral to such an extent that millions of people, including celebrities, were responding on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites like Tumblr, where it was originally posted.
It was also all over the news with many media outlets offering a polling system to tally how many people viewed the dress as white and gold, like my husband and I did, or blue and black, like our children did.
The results seemed
evenly split for the most part, and that’s what I noticed when I posted the picture and question on my own Facebook page.
While most people seemed to be having a jolly good time weighing in with what they saw, baffled as to why we weren’t all seeing the identical colours, others were completely irritated.
“Nobody cares,” “It’s ugly,” “This isn’t news,” “This is stupid,” and “Enough already” were just some of the sentiments I read repeatedly.
Obviously the colour of the dress wasn’t the only thing people were completely divided on.
The reaction to this story becoming an internet sensation was clearly mixed. From my perspective, I saw it as an entertaining distraction from the horrifying murder and
mayhem that typically dominates the news.
I found it engaging because so many of us were asking the same questions. Why aren’t we all seeing the same thing? Who posted the original picture? How did it go viral so fast? Why had this type of story not exploded in the news before? What was the actual colour of it in real life?
Those answers and more can easily be found online, but in case you don’t already know, the lowdown on the latter is that the dress is blue and black. . So what else have I perceived so incorrectly?
No, this was not hard hitting news. But, like most people, I welcome some enjoyment in my day and this fit in nicely. It also taught me some things I didn’t know.
I was intrigued to hear what my friend Susan thought, since she’s often complained about the negativity of traditional media.
“If it bleeds it leads,” she’s groaned. “It’s so depressing.”
I thought she’d love the lighthearted dress debate.

From / A4 I was wrong—she
was not impressed. She also disliked the extensive coverage a couple of escaped llamas in Arizona were getting at the same time.
“Don’t you find them interesting or amusing?” I asked.
“No,” she said. “But even if I did, llamas on the loose and hideous dresses don’t belong on the news.”
I had to disagree. The public displayed tremendous interest
in both of these stories. They’re a good example of how people want the serious journalism that might leave them feeling sad or angry, but they’re more likely to pass along the happy stuff.
An analysis of the social share counts of over 100 million articles by Buzzsumo confirms this. The content discovery company presented the four most popular emotions invoked in viral stories as awe,
laughter, amusement and joy, whereas sadness and anger were among the least popular emotions, adding up to only seven per cent.
I can’t say I’m entirely okay with these statistics. Sharing information about crucial issues that require our help need to be circulated as well. Yet when we consider that the most read articles aren’t necessarily the most shared, and that we’re thoroughly inundated
with tragic stories from all over the world, it’s easy to see why we’d be attracted to something positive.
There needs to be a healthy balance between all types of reports, both good and bad. But much like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, news is in the mind of the observer.
Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be found at LoriWelbourne.com.
